Insanely genius where he sets everyone up with the weak and unoriginal massage parlor joke, lets the audience feel momentarily like they're one up on him and then let's them have it with one after another 'out there' ridiculous scenarios. Ain't fair ticklin' like that ! "FDR calling Hitler and quickly hanging up on him"!! I won't be able to laugh again for a couple of weeks now. Insanutty!

This seems like the most edgy material that would have been allowed on mainstream tv, they probably wouldn't have asked him back after this. great stuff.
good as carlin was, he still was not quite up to Prior, but what the hell they left everyone else in the shade nobody nearly as funny as they, not even close
not even some of the excellent crew of snl and jeez look at how good some of them were
Always love ya, George, where ever you are - but what gives with that getup?! I've never seen such a goofy outfit on a late night host. Button that shirt, this ain't no disco!
@campbpar You don't have to idolize him but he was definitely something special, and in my opinion a lot smarter and more interesting than most other comedians out there.
Fuck, it seems like we've lost all of our good comedians too early. Even though he made it to 71, we needed him for twenty more years. At least he died on top of comedy.
@trakomako I'm elated for you that you want others to perceive you as the wonderfully mature, enlightened, intelligent person that you truly are. Carlin is a lot more than a drug addict, he has left a legacy that few other comedians will ever hold a candle to. His social commentary was always current and sharp. Many, like you, will judge his personal life rather than his vast skill and wit, and will therefore miss out on one of the most genius artists of all time.
I've been having problems with this particular poster myself, and he isn't coming across as much of an intellectual, whether he's aspiring to or not...
@trakomako Yes, you must be, or maybe you're just a troll. Or perhaps you don't understand everything that Mr. Carlin is saying. Either way, your negativity is unbecoming and juvenile.
Genius. From the beginning to the end of his career, pure brilliance. I would stay up late at night and watch his specials on HBO and in actuality, only understand his routines partially, but as I grew older, I realized that he was right about everything. Where is the George Carlin of today?
cant tell by your grammar useage there.. do you mean he has never been high while making an appearance on television? OR did you mean he's high everytime he's been on television????
the only thing i know of that he wasnt high off 'something' would be his album 'Class Clown' and in his ''40 years of Comedy' he said "i'v always got a joint... some where near me at all times"
Carlin was the greatest ever.He never sold out,and he could work any audience. He could work clean or use profanity to make his point a little louder. He's influenced all comics (especially Maher and Seineld).
the only reson he got funnier in 90's FOR YOU , is that he started to use more curse words. lol ur an idiot if u think he is better in 90's... lol. he was always amazing
I don't think that's a fair assessment of his 90s work. He was always funny. But his work from the 90s til his death became even more observational, analytical, strident, confrontational -- and it was brilliant in cutting thru the B.S. He had always had that knack, but it got sharper in his old age. Like a fine wine, that guy.
Maybe you are right. But you have to admit that XXI age audience prefer the 90's + videos because curse words are popular these days. And these 90's - videos do not include routines with non stoping swearing.
its sure the opposite .. he was funny before , and throughout his life he kept improving ..
not only that his jokes became more funny , but also had an idea
and he can not be farther from left-wing ..he had new ideas and believed that left and right are the same crap , thats why he stopped voting since the 70s .
@leeharveyosmosis meaning radical, no? that he wanted the government to radically change as in not to have the shitty parties. He was more neutral then anything, fuck his interviews. Read some of his shit and investigate more.
Carlin is the best stand-up of all time! Most people say Richard Pryor, and he was awesome, but Carlin's material was top notch and his longevity is incomparable. So much material. So many years of teaching us young fuckers how to do shit. He's like a second dad.
aegis apparently you haven't saw every George Carlin interview... just type George Carlin interview in and press enter... its the first one... watch the whole thing he says hes hosted the tonight show at least 10 times...
That's a nice television-grey version of the classic RCA 77 microphone being used there.
David Letterman used an RCA 77dx on the old show, and Larry King still uses one on his show. Even Tom Green has one on his desk for his little internet show he runs from his home.
This was back when the Tonight Show was still classy and interesting and entertaining.
Now its trash.
It's like watching someone get interviewed in a livingroom. It's like the modified version of "Waynes World". After the writers strike ended, I just stopped watching and haven't been back since.
The censors would have booted him off the show in the first ten minutes, and that would be the last time he would have ever hosted a primetime show. The nitwits at NBC or CBS or whatever don't want someone who is original, who thinks for themselves. They want a robot.
Leno, Letterman, O'Brien, now Fallon, Kimmel, Christ, these are yes men. Their humor is second to their ability to behave obediantly.
Think if you go to YouTube's archive interviews of George Carlin, he does talk about his professional credits including the number of times he's done stand-up on the The Tonight Show as well as hosting it.
OMG -- I remember seeing this very episode! (My parents caught me watching TV, after I was supposed to go to bed.) The "massage parlor" joke was my favorite!
