The kinks are one of history's most underrated bands. Here in the Americas people often forget them. Instead, we honor bands who get all the credit that the Kinks Deserve. Bands that I will not name (for I don't wanna hurt any feelings) but necertheless bands that steal the credit the Kinks deserve.
Agreed about the BBC studio version of this song. It's dynamite! I never thought The Kinks could rock like this. Would love to know who's playing the Hammond organ on this.Does anyone know how I could find out?
Dave Davies was the original hard rocker. His contributions vocally are great, too. The drummer was phenomenal. Ever listen to his mastery of the drums? He was the heartbeat of the group. Just listen - especially starting at 2:07! He ranks right up there with Moon, Bonham and Baker in greatness.
i disagree the kinks sense of humor and lyric wit alone make them amazing AND the music is awesome the kinks CAN do no wrong r u forgetting they were a pop band? have u HEARD pop music lately? there isnt an original thought to be found whether i like some or not
"Jangly"? It's just created in the style of sixties pop/rock. Almost all songs from that time had at least one tamborine shaking in the background, and a sixties twang to the guitar. It's just the decade. I think it's rather unfair to be so critical because of that.
FunnyByDefinition, calling me "unfair" is OK. Kinks YouTubers are a bit crazed. Such as leilajo77..."the kinks CAN do no wrong." Wow. Not a mediocre song. Ever. And certainly no bad songs. Never. As sbarr10 says, "I have no favorite Kinks song, nor is there a song I have found yet that I hate. There are some I like less than others. That's it." Honestly, fans who dress up for KISS conventions seem sane by comparison. But your response was thoughtful, so thank you for that.
@FunnyByDefinition u r so right. this is one among many fave kinks songs. ray davies recent solo stuff pretty good too. wish they would make up and do some shows for the fans
that would be good of them. ray solo was awesome in asbury pary last year. dave got sick and i couldnt see him in philly. saw then first time way back when preservation act 2 was out, they got introduced as the "legendary kinks", played "here comes flash". by end of the show i was addicted.. they were so cool mid 70's , they did requests, encores when the equpitment was torn down. they were really a peoples band, they could still be . love em, always will
I know exactly what you mean! I have no favorite Kinks song, nor is there a song I have found yet that I hate. There are some I like less than others. That's it.
@sbarr10 I own an overview of Kinks songs and when hearing them one after another quite amusing how they follow trends over time. This is more similar to groups like the Marmalade btw ...
@wyteboybb Two completely different genres, you cannot compare them. Hendrix was a blues lead guitarist that led into metal, similar to Zeppelin. Davies has that crunchy guitar sound, I love both genres, but prefer The Kinks, Zombies, and Beatles.
First of all, nobody has nor will they ever out-Hendrix Hendrix. That being said, the '60s UK rock scene consisted entirely of great artists influencing and being influenced by each other, and Dave Davies in particular doesn't get enough credit for that whole thing. He is to Clapton, Page, J. Beck, Hendrix, etc. what Charlie Parker was to John Coltrane, dig it. Link Wray may've invented distortion, but Dave Davies introduced it to the British Invasion, and we are forever grateful.
i love this song, the signature pre-hard rock kink sound, the organ, the claps, the drums, the slight psychedelic feel, blah, blah... anyway it's a Kinks' song!!
Dave Davies said that he used his mother's knitting needles to poke holes in his amp, in order to get his early, famous sound. However, John Mendelssohn wrote in his book, "The Kinks Kronikles" that for this song Dave must have used SWORDS!!
That has to be the most apocalyptic guitar riff I've ever heard.

Supposedly, Dave slashed his speakers to get the distorted guitar sound.

Jangly and irritating...while YouTube is full of positive comments about bands, this "Kinks can do no wrong" thing is pathetic.

I love Jimi Hendrix but I really really think that Dave Davies was out-Hendrixing Hendrix before the Experience!
"Love Me Til the Sun Shines" was recorded in mid-1967, so it was out around the time "Are You Experienced?" was out.
But listen to the Kinks "Sitting on My Sofa", which was recorded in late 1965, just before the Jimi Hendrix Experience was formed.
Dave Davies, that cheeky young kid from north London, was waaay ahead of his time.

Sitting on my Sofa may be my favorite Kinks song, thought it's hard to choose.

At last Dave Davis. Theres a lot of Ray's songs but it's difficult to find something of Dave's work. Thanks for this one.

This version sounds a LOT tamer than the BBC version on the box set.
The box set version BLASTS you, lifts you off your feet, and pins you helplessly against the wall!
Dave Davies was waaay ahead of his time!
