I can really see where you're cpming from, recently I have developed a habit of writing a comment for every good video I watch, even if it's just something like 'Lol' But then I realised, hey - wait a second, NOBODY WANTS TO READ THAT. The internet has become a place where everyone and their mom hangs out. You mentioned in your video that YouTube seems to attract a large amount of ignorant people. However, this is most likely an illusion. It attracts everyone in its own way. The problem is, the ignorant people are the ones who feel that they need to comment on everything. The smart people usually sit back and keep their opinions to themselves. I completely support your decision to disable comments and keep the tubes unclogged.
I think it is a shame that this is the case but I definitely know that would be a problem since your videos are pretty popular. That's what you get for being so goddamned talented.

As much as I love your videos, I find this a bit pretentious - so you get stupid comments but why disable the whole system just skip over the ones you don't want to see and scroll down to the good ones.
It's like some people are terrible drivers let's get rid of cars. Some people cut themselves let's get rid of knives(ok not that commenting on videos is that important).
You make a good point. Comments are nice for us lazy people who wish to leave a quick response and not click around before being able to contact you, but I completely understand your point. Forums of any kind seem to suffer from this same problem. I'm sorry that you feel you've had to do this, but I still look forward to all your future videos.

I feel like it is a right shame that you have decided to deactivate individual video comments. Sure, you eliminate the lousy comments but you also decrease the chance of getting enjoyable and supportive ones. I hope you will reconsider, although I really rather doubt that you will. 1) Of course I agree that the "ur a fag" comments, and the like, are worthless. Negative criticism is great, but it must be constructive.
2) The "omg Ryan's so hott" comments are stupid, unless left on his channel. They're stupid there, too, but at least they're aimed at the right person, rather than totally bypassing you and your work.
However, I think that disabling comments eliminates a community specific to open forums, and I hope this doesn't hurt you.
That's the thing. There's a huge shift in perception of a video when it's an openly commented-upon work, and when it's an island with no feedback save for a star rating. It puts an indifferent tint to the picture. I personally enjoy reading your videos' comments, because they're overwhelmingly positive and I like to see my friends get credit, even if it's youtubey. It shouldn't be so difficult for you to take the good with the bad.
I have no problem with the smidgen of bad I get. It doesn't keep me up at night and it's not like I got one bad comment too many and it caused me to make this video. I really just don't like how disposable the comments are. I've since doing this I've already gotten a bunch of private messages from people telling me whatever they want to say and they're much more thought-out and personal.
It might be interesting to make a video based on all the comments people leave on here as their "last thing they want to say to you in a comment." It would certainly support your stupid comment thesis, but also highlight the good ones.

The internet is a wide world, and a sensitive soul will encounter a vast array of things that offend delicate sensibilities. YouTube involves millions of people on a daily basis, many of whom are likely honing their juvenile/adolescent chops before passing into the (sometimes) more reasoned approach of adults. As such, children with fragile, over-valued egos will probably not fare well. Maybe you're too sensitive for YouTube. How about "NoStupidCommentsOnMyPreciousWorkI'mSmarterThanYouTube"?
Not to emulate Ryan or anything, but the thought struck me: The anonymity of all this kind of thing (youtube, IMDB, etc) and the fact that it lets people be vastly more vicious than they'd ever be in real life both interests and terrifies me.

It kind of makes me feel ashamed of my age though, since many (though certainly not all) of the comments you refer to are made by people around my age or a bit younger. Though I'm glad you addressed this, because lots of comments bug me, too.

Your reasons for doing this definitely make sense, but I think this is a dangerous idea. As Neil mentioned, it's completely self-sacrificial. But beyond that, any community you've built up on YouTube will wither away because people can't comment on your recent work. Unfortunately, not being able to say something about the video as they watch it will, I think, turn people away.
And plus, whose videos will Ryan and I leave masturbatory comments on? Neil's? He has enough comments as it is.

I completely agree, over half of youtube is filled with people, who spam videos with comments of like completely nothingness. I'm sure its frustrating to you when you get inspired, take your time to make a video for people to enjoy (Or maybe you just do it for yourself, whatever) and people comment with "gay you suck!!!!11" when they more than likely didn't even watch the video, or least not all of it...And personally it's not even great to get a comment that just says "you're awesome"

The internet has become a place where everyone and their mom hangs out. You mentioned in your video that YouTube seems to attract a large amount of ignorant people. However, this is most likely an illusion. It attracts everyone in its own way. The problem is, the ignorant people are the ones who feel that they need to comment on everything. The smart people usually sit back and keep their opinions to themselves. I completely support your decision to disable comments and keep the tubes unclogged.

As much as I love your videos, I find this a bit pretentious - so you get stupid comments but why disable the whole system just skip over the ones you don't want to see and scroll down to the good ones.
It's like some people are terrible drivers let's get rid of cars. Some people cut themselves let's get rid of knives(ok not that commenting on videos is that important).

I feel like it is a right shame that you have decided to deactivate individual video comments. Sure, you eliminate the lousy comments but you also decrease the chance of getting enjoyable and supportive ones. I hope you will reconsider, although I really rather doubt that you will. You seem like the guy of guy who sticks to his guns about this sort of thing. Being able to comment on your work, piece by piece gave some people a bit of joy. I know it did for me. Personally, this seems sort of sad to me. Partially, I'm upset that there is enough "ignorance" for you to be genuinely annoyed with it.
More selfishly, I love posting comment. For me, I can't truly enjoy watching a video with at analyzing it just briefly enough to write some comment. It truly is an integral part of the experience and I would not be surprised if others feel the same.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I, for one, and really going to miss comments.

Your friends always crack me up, and I love reading your replies to people (like the fact that panthers made age 16 the worst year of your life). Comments let your viewers interact with each other, even if it's just to discuss frivolous details. I love the banter, and I love the interaction.

I haven't had internet access at home for most of my young life, so I never learned the casual way to talk online and don't use the acronyms. It doesn't make sense to me that someone would write something without at least thinking it out, or taking the time to type it. I'm sorry that the stupidity of some has affected you this much.

1) Of course I agree that the "ur a fag" comments, and the like, are worthless. Negative criticism is great, but it must be constructive.
2) The "omg Ryan's so hott" comments are stupid, unless left on his channel. They're stupid there, too, but at least they're aimed at the right person, rather than totally bypassing you and your work.
However, I think that disabling comments eliminates a community specific to open forums, and I hope this doesn't hurt you.
Ultimately, I enjoy your work.

That's the thing. There's a huge shift in perception of a video when it's an openly commented-upon work, and when it's an island with no feedback save for a star rating. It puts an indifferent tint to the picture. I personally enjoy reading your videos' comments, because they're overwhelmingly positive and I like to see my friends get credit, even if it's youtubey. It shouldn't be so difficult for you to take the good with the bad.

I have no problem with the smidgen of bad I get. It doesn't keep me up at night and it's not like I got one bad comment too many and it caused me to make this video. I really just don't like how disposable the comments are. I've since doing this I've already gotten a bunch of private messages from people telling me whatever they want to say and they're much more thought-out and personal.

I like your work, but you are obviously ill-prepared for celebrity. I don't know why you can't embrace your audience for who they are instead of trying to rationalize with them.
Anyway, if you haven't learned already, people are idiots and turning off comments isn't going to change that. However, if you don't want to read the comments, I completely understand. That's why YouTube gives you the option to disable them.

I only recently realised how awful it could be, when I made my 'Death Threat' response.
As someone below said, the power anonymity seems to convince people that they can spam, and leave useless 'lolz' all day long.

The internet is a wide world, and a sensitive soul will encounter a vast array of things that offend delicate sensibilities. YouTube involves millions of people on a daily basis, many of whom are likely honing their juvenile/adolescent chops before passing into the (sometimes) more reasoned approach of adults. As such, children with fragile, over-valued egos will probably not fare well. Maybe you're too sensitive for YouTube. How about "NoStupidCommentsOnMyPreciousWorkI'mSmarterThanYouTube"?

Not to emulate Ryan or anything, but the thought struck me: The anonymity of all this kind of thing (youtube, IMDB, etc) and the fact that it lets people be vastly more vicious than they'd ever be in real life both interests and terrifies me.

I support and understand your decision, and if anybody actually watched my videos I would probably do the same thing. I must say that I will miss the challenge of thinking up something clever to write in a comment, because I like words and hate to see them go to waste, or be stupidly used.
And I do agree with you about IMDB. I no longer consider it to exist, simply because it's gotten to be so profoundly ignorant.
And that's all I have to say about that.

First, I would like to thank you, Max, for coming up with some of the most entertaining shorts I have seen on the internet. Your ability to convey your sarcastic attitude in a pleasing manner is admirable, especially when you must suffer for your art (JAZZ!). Sadly, you are making the right decision in removing video comments, since in "MarcoBat16 Hates Your Comments" and "A Random Video" you clearly expressed your disdain for idiotic comments. It kind of makes me feel ashamed of my age though, since many (though certainly not all) of the comments you refer to are made by people around my age or a bit younger. Though I'm glad you addressed this, because lots of comments bug me, too.
I hope I wasn't one of those people...

I'm going to miss being able to leave comments on your videos, but I understand why you're disabling them, and I'm with you 100%. If I got truckloads of comments on my videos (I wish), I'd probably start weeding out the ignorant flakes, too. On the plus side, I might actually be forced to get creative and start making video responses now!

I guess as long as you still make videos I can handle this, except I do really like how you reply to comments I make. It's nice to interact with someone I really admire, something you can't normally do with popular youtubers. (Like Neil, who apparently doesn't even read them!)

The pressure to write a really good comment!I do understand why youre doing this,if I find it annoying to read bad comments,no doubt it's much worse to receive them!But I would like to say that I adore your videos.I've ended up downloading most of your videos to put them on my ipod so I can watch them in school(not a good plan)etc,just cos they're so good!So I'd just like to say keep up the good work and all that!I look forward to many,haterfree videos from now on!

Your reasons for doing this definitely make sense, but I think this is a dangerous idea. As Neil mentioned, it's completely self-sacrificial. But beyond that, any community you've built up on YouTube will wither away because people can't comment on your recent work. Unfortunately, not being able to say something about the video as they watch it will, I think, turn people away.
And plus, whose videos will Ryan and I leave masturbatory comments on? Neil's? He has enough comments as it is.

Aww, yes, I do also hope I am not one of those you frown upon for ignorant comments b/c they bug me too. Anyway, I appreciate your work, and this may sound slightly sappy, but I've had a horrible week and your video-a-day's have been some of the only things that have put a smile on my face. I hope none of my comments on your video have ever been "stupid". I think your work is great and you're a cool dude with many good tastes in film, comedy, and music. I guess I will have to get into the habit of actually rating videos haha. It sucks that a few rotten YouTubers abused and lost the privilege for the rest of us. I will still watch and give you feedback on your vids no matter what.

Having read most of the comments on your daily videos, I can see why you would disable comments(though I have to tell you, reading you yell at people using gay as an insult made me like you that much more =).) I discovered your videos through watching Neil's, but through these videos and your others I'm finding that I like your work a lot more than I initially thought. Your sarcasm never fails to amuse. Keep up the good work! I'll keep watching!

I completely agree, over half of youtube is filled with people, who spam videos with comments of like completely nothingness. I'm sure its frustrating to you when you get inspired, take your time to make a video for people to enjoy (Or maybe you just do it for yourself, whatever) and people comment with "gay you suck!!!!11" when they more than likely didn't even watch the video, or least not all of it...And personally it's not even great to get a comment that just says "you're awesome"

You're absolutely right about YouTube comments. They often end up straying from the topic of the video itself and start insulting people.

I understand why you're doing this, but you look sad. So here's something that I hope makes you laugh. AngryAussie is a comedian who spoke out against Nazis on ytube so he gets absolutely flooded with nasty racist comments. Here's some of his vids yelling at "haters" that you can identify with. AngryAussie- My Addiction, The Hater Conundrum, Hating Haters- I hope they make you feel better.

Part of the fun of youtube is interacting with the person who made the video. I know we could still email you, but it is so convenient to comment about the video on the page where the video is hosted.
You're right the imdb boards annoy the crap out of me. Some of those people should just stop talking.
