@sandrodream1 Your comment received too many negative votes. I think it's because you put "singed." If you hadn't put that word you would probably have been ok, though you shouldn't have said that "opera should be singed only in Italian." I like Wagner and I don't wish everyone to start singing his Ring Cycle in Italian as it wouldn't sound right. Chinese operas sung in Italian are ok.
Korngold war ein herausragendes Genie! Schlimm, dass die Musikwelt das kaum erkannt hat. Dabei hatte er das Potential für noch viel größeres. Schade, dass er sich in späteren Jahren so vergeudet hat.
@sandrodream1 Except for ones that were composed in a different language! This is a German opera by a German composer. It is meant to be sung in German!
It can be obtained through CDUniversal(out of Arthaus) -it's brilliant.I saw a production in Madrid recently.Alas the tenor didn't hit the high b flat at the conclusion. This tenor Torsten Kerl is amazing!
One should try to hear the original 1924 acoustic recording by Richard Tauber and Lotte Lehmann, conducted by Geroge Szell. They were the first to perform the opera in Berlin [it had already been performed elsewhere].
Peccato.
I agree, I was absolutely stunned, when I first heard this performance. This is, how they should perform an opera!!! The lady sings so sweet, without this enormous apmlitude of vibrato usually heard... The male singer also does excellent job!!! The staging is great, a bit surrealistic one might say. BTW: the first few notes of this aria are curved on Erich Wolfgang Korngold's gravestone. Probably because of the beautiful lyrics too...
@jschultz4 Well, normally you'd be right, but the tenor is supposed to emulate some kind of derangement here. He's stuck in mental pergatory with the skeleton pieces of his wife, for crying out loud. I'd hardly even be coherent, let alone be able to carry a tune.
It was so intense!

Beautifully sung (though low level): production looks decidedly iffy. The opera scheduled for production by Australian Opera in 2012.

Sorry Kryltoppa
I am going to be fussy, and just point out that Korngold was NOT a German composer,he was Austrian.
He was born in Brunn in the Austro Hungarian Empire in 1897.
Brunn is now Brno and in the Czech Republic

Had to turn the volume up quite a bit. VERY, VERY moving (T_T)
Beautifully staged too.

...it is not a love duett, not at all. He is singing for his dead wife, not for Marietta. And the skeletton of his wife is under the door...

I've just bought it here in Germany in Müller. Maybe your best bet is to buy it on the internet. You wont find it often in shops, or order it in one.
I can recommend this, its exceptional! This is how opera should be... Great singing, acting, production... It has everything!

Finally, I have the dvd, I found it in Madrid. I LOVED LOVED LOVED it. The "new" ending is very interesting, by giving 0 hope to the story

Ok - I have the score. Korngold does write portament in, but there is NONE is this part of the opera.

Korngold has portamenti marked clearly in the score where he wants it. It is not in this section of the opera. Do you have a problem with that?

It is great music. But that tenor is working a little too hard. And sliding around too much. This isn't Puccini...
jschultz4 3 years ago
But it is Korngold, though. He wrote those portamenti on the score, I think.
