  • It was so intense!

  • @sandrodream1 Your comment received too many negative votes. I think it's because you put "singed." If you hadn't put that word you would probably have been ok, though you shouldn't have said that "opera should be singed only in Italian." I like Wagner and I don't wish everyone to start singing his Ring Cycle in Italian as it wouldn't sound right. Chinese operas sung in Italian are ok.

  • Beautifully sung (though low level): production looks decidedly iffy. The opera scheduled for production by Australian Opera in 2012.

  • Sorry Kryltoppa

I am going to be fussy, and just point out that Korngold was NOT a German composer,he was Austrian.

He was born in Brunn in the Austro Hungarian Empire in 1897.

Brunn is now Brno and in the Czech Republic

  • Had to turn the volume up quite a bit. VERY, VERY moving (T_T)

    Beautifully staged too.

  • Beautiful! I like this a lot better than the versions of the "famed" sopranos!

  • @sandrodream1 Except for ones that were composed in a different language! This is a German opera by a German composer. It is meant to be sung in German!

  • SWEET

  • Very esoteric opera, not well known 'The dead city' is a jewel, here is the love duet

  • It can be obtained through CDUniversal(out of Arthaus) -it's brilliant.I saw a production in Madrid recently.Alas the tenor didn't hit the high b flat at the conclusion. This tenor Torsten Kerl is amazing!

  • She is fantastic

  • One should try to hear the original 1924 acoustic recording by Richard Tauber and Lotte Lehmann, conducted by Geroge Szell. They were the first to perform the opera in Berlin [it had already been performed elsewhere].

  • Thank you very much for posting this. Isnt' it gorgeous? Isn't the music fabulous? What a wonderful opera Die Tote Stadt is - such atmosphere!

  • this is show is lacking some explosions and 3d special fx stuff! also the chick should have bigger boobs

  • It's not performed enough

  • The best one I've seen yet!

  • Wonderful!

  • SENSATIONELL!!!!

  • so detailed score! how could he achieve this when he was just 23?

this is what I call "genius"..

  • Peccato.

  • Poor Paul looks like he's having a mental breakdown.

  • Sad, magical, wonderful

  • Very touching.

  • This is, what we call in german brilliant "Musiktheater". Denoke & Kerl what a perfekt Duo! Very good DVD.

  • i just absolutely love 0:25 to 2:00

  • Breathtakingly beautiful. And VERY moving.

    Thanks for uploading, Kryltoppa.

  • magnifique

  • Absolutely breath taking. oh man...

  • one of the most beautiful love duets ever!

  • ...it is not a love duett, not at all. He is singing for his dead wife, not for Marietta. And the skeletton of his wife is under the door...

  • My favorite aria ever!

  • Her singing is wonderful.

  • My favorite Marietta. What a sweet and gentle voice! Perfect.

  • Has this perfromance been released on cd or only on dvd?

  • Yes, on Arthaus Musik label (Latham-Koenig/ Kerl, Denoke, Batukov, Svenden). Really amazing show.

  • Beautiful singing, Beautiful production, Beautiful acting. Why couldn't there be more of this in opera.

  • well, get off your butt and put one on ...it only takes some money!

  • She sings like an angel.

  • Note the piano player - is this supposed to be a representation of a young Erich Korngold?

  • Exquisite music performed beautifully. Thank you for this gorgeous experience.

  • very good production, very good sound... what an experience...

  • bellissima aria e brava Angela!!!

  • Where can I find the dvd of this??

    Angela Denoke ROCKS!

  • I've just bought it here in Germany in Müller. Maybe your best bet is to buy it on the internet. You wont find it often in shops, or order it in one.

I can recommend this, its exceptional! This is how opera should be... Great singing, acting, production... It has everything!

  • Finally, I have the dvd, I found it in Madrid. I LOVED LOVED LOVED it. The "new" ending is very interesting, by giving 0 hope to the story

  • Korngold - Die tote Stadt / Jan Latham-Koenig - Denoke, Kerl - Opéra de Rhin (1999). The video is beautiful. You'll love it!

  • So much better as a duet! This is really glorious.

  • gorgeous!! Loved the staging also!!

  • I agree, I was absolutely stunned, when I first heard this performance. This is, how they should perform an opera!!! The lady sings so sweet, without this enormous apmlitude of vibrato usually heard... The male singer also does excellent job!!! The staging is great, a bit surrealistic one might say. BTW: the first few notes of this aria are curved on Erich Wolfgang Korngold's gravestone. Probably because of the beautiful lyrics too...

  • Ok - I have the score. Korngold does write portament in, but there is NONE is this part of the opera.

  • if you don't know korngold you better just be quiet....seriously

  • Oh MARY!

Or might I say.. OH MARIETTA!

  • But it is Korngold, though. He wrote those portamenti on the score, I think.

  • @Kryltoppa Yes! You are correct Kryltoppa.

  • @jschultz4 Well, normally you'd be right, but the tenor is supposed to emulate some kind of derangement here. He's stuck in mental pergatory with the skeleton pieces of his wife, for crying out loud. I'd hardly even be coherent, let alone be able to carry a tune.

  • Damn, this is great music!!!
