  • The problem with this concept is the execution. Being someone who has studied construction of PV panels at some detail and have begun producing my own, I can tell you the problem is likely the inequality of distribution of light on the panel. If any part of a panel is shaded even at day time, that section can quit producing electricity, hence why every "string" of cells in a panel should be diode-bypassed. SO you need a beam of moonlight on EACH cell to make this work (maybe)... Try that!

  • I have a couple of thoughts on this:

    1) The full moon is highest in the sky when the sun is lowest, i.e., in December/January when you could also escape the mosquitoes better.

    2) The albedo (reflective capability) of the moon is about 6% of the sunlight that hits it. I don't know what percent of that would be usable solar power for a panel.

  • @bodryn The magnitude of a full moon is about -12.7. The magnitude of the sun is about -27. There is a logarithmic relationship of about 2.512 per magnitude of brightness, so you could take 2.512 to the 14th power to get an idea of the ratio of power available, sun vs. moon.

  • is this real working?

  • No doubt that if this was done in the winter months with no humidity this would have worked wonders for you . Your idea was sound and should have worked with out a problem. You two put out some fantastic videos! Keep up the great work!

  • if obama sees this it will be categorized as shovel ready.

  • Gov Moon Beam there you are!

  • Why not carpeting the Moon all over with alum foil to shine it even brighter like the Sun ooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • try this in winter as the moon will be over your hemisphere when it's winter and so be slightly larger when full! good luck!

  • @Rescueswimmer85 . Not helpful. The mirror would increase the amount of solar energy reaching the earth, and cause global warming. It's better to collect some of the solar energy already reaching the earth.

  • It's not volts that count. You need to measure how many watts you get (volts multiplied by amps). That's the measure of the amount of power. It might help if you learned a bit more about electrical energy. The question is, what area of mirrors is needed to light a 100W lightbulb to full power?

  • I WONDER IS THERE AN EASIER AND MORE EFFICIENT WAY OF DOING THIS. I APPLAUD THE ATTEMPT. THERE HAS TO BE A WAY TO DO THIS IN REGARDS TO THE SUN IN THE DAY. THE ENERGY OF GRAVITY CAN'T BE USED ?

    -TeRa1320 CyberPunk Extrodinaire !!!!!!!!

  • FAIL..!

  • i wonder if a solar panel could withstand the increased power of the sun using a fresnel lens? if it could would the electric power increase?

  • Incorrect meter...

It looks like you used an AC Clamp on AMP meter to try to detect DC voltage as illustrated in 3:23 minutes of your video. I recommend that you go to Radio Shack and purchase a real volt meter, then set its decimal to 0.00 so if you get like 1.20 you will know that you got 1 volt with 200 milli volt. But an AMP meter will only try to measue AMP and that 001 to back to 000 that you got was just a 1 sided AC spike since DC is not alternating like AC. Again, wrong meter used.

  • My first reaction was that you are nuts, but hecks becks this could pay off. You are developing some serious concentrator technology. So go crazy!!!

  • uh, tidal power is technically lunar power... lunar power that isn't also solar power.

  • the geodescent dome is made of fresnel lenses,by the way for this idea!!!

  • thats why thet make nightmode lol,my idea involves moonlite catcher funnels over the top of a geodescent dome with a bronze reflectant floor, and two bronze colered reflecter wings pointed out down towards each other onto a single point, then place a solar cell into a perfect cube with all sides lined inside, except with a silver finish, and leave the top open, then place it between the two focus points,

  • TRUE !!

  • lunar power is still technically solar power...lol

  • LOL. I hate mud >:(

  • @Rescueswimmer85 there is actually a mirror on the moon, but it can only reflect high power lasers

  • it would also probably destroy all nocturnal life.

  • You should use a voltmeter with higher resolution.

    Keep on the good work.

  • depends on the phase of the moon, during a new moon the sun shines on the back side.

  • Can wait to see this in optimal conditions. Had a thought a long while ago and wondered if you could start a fire with a large frenel and a full moon. I have 56" spot lens i bought a couple of years ago from Dan.

Thanks again Dan, Also love your outakes!

  • put plastic down under your mirror a big pace. ps i love your videos u make it easy for me to understand

  • surely if you had the fresnel lense and photo-voltaic cells closer to the mirrors, you would produce more electricity as light follows the inverse square law... so you could increase the energy significantly in comparison to what you were recieving?

  • the results are sometimes a bit dubious, but you sure do come up with lots of ideas, cool brain food

  • There is no moon. The earth is flat.

  • Hey Brother,

I saw this and had another idea. If you used the parabolic lenses to collect the moon light and put a small 6" frensel lenses at the focal point, or just beyond, you should get a concentrated beam coming out of the lenses, that you can direct at a photovoltaic cell, or a larger frensel lens. This is because the smaller frensel could be placed on a gimble to direct the light off the mirror-moon axis.

I am going to try this with my cardboard tinfoil and the bathroom lens

  • I remember in the Florida everglades that I was able to get a small pin dot of moon light to shine out of my telescope. I would guess that you could get up to 3 volts from a full moon. I would try this experiment but I generally wake up the next day after a full moon in a strange place with blood on my mouth -- I don't want to really talk about it though.

  • Agreed:-) I thought it would produce more. I will be doing this again the next full moon before summer. It is just miserable outside at night here in July. Humid, hot, mosquitos, muddy, condensation. I already miss the great weather we have been experiencing.

  • This was funny. Nice experiment.

  • Dan, there were actually about five or six times when your DMM read 1. However, what scale was it set on? If it was on the 20V range (since the DMM read 001 instead of 010), you probably had it too high -- very likely, you were getting some amount of voltage off the panel without even knowing it. Try using the 2V range instead for greater precision.

  • Perhaps we coould go to the mood mine for titanium dioxide then spread it across the moon so it could give us more light.

  • glad you tried it thanks for sharing

  • i'm wondering if i could use the street lamp outside my house to do the same thing, and then sell the energy back to the electricity company. LOL.

  • That's funny shit

  • God! I was thinking the same x_x

    Im sure it's doable!

  • Very well done both of you for putting the effort into this tricky experiment. Do you still plan to conduct a similar test in less humid conditions? If you do, please show the alignment setup under torch light before the test begins. 8^)

  • This video is ment for educational reasons and not entertainment. If you come here and have an disagreement then fine, but theres no need for name calling or addressing someone negitively.

  • Good try with the moon, though a full moon is usally fairly light out. There is a couple in arizona that set up a large mirror to concentrate the lunar light.

you might be able to get them to try your experiment.

  • Thank you

I never have seen any lunar solar projects.

Mosquitos are a pain, we usually never wear shorts or short sleeves in the summer. Sounds backwards but they always find you any time of the day. Especially when working.

We have big fans with screen and catch about 500-1000 a night, but it makes no difference. There are 3 bats at work too. Gonna build em a bat house.

I like the winter here, when the temp drops below 60F I can wear summer clothes.

Do not like DEET (:X) and burns my skin.

  • Thank you for doing these tests with the mirrors and moon and solar panel. Its great see people having fun and testing out their ideas. Keep up the great videos!!!

  • You need more bats.......:)

  • im suprise you did not get more voltage..

  • How about using cold air? You could use a ISSAC ice maker (solar ice maker) set up and cool liquid, then pump it through a heat exchanger, seal the whole loop, panel inside w/ glass face over the panel and recirculate the air through the loop.

  • Would it not be neat to have censors that kept the mirrors pointed at any light source day and night. The interstate would probably pull 4 volts.

  • Thanks, Dan! Keep the cool videos comin'!

  • Wow thats a really cool idea

  • maybe not the outcome we were hoping for, but what an awesome idea! hopefully better results with better conditions.

  • that was still trick, the first time I saw anyone do that..

  • 1 volt, not much but maybe a first.
