  • where did you get this?

  • The synth demonstration video to end all synth demonstration videos - it doesn't get better than this ....

  • is this multitracked or is this making all those sounds (minus the 808 drums) at once?

  • @Link0126 no multitracking. straight to video.

  • how hard was this to program, if it was even a challenge for you?

  • @RockaRollaZombie It's easy enough tbh. The ARP is patched with sliders and it's pretty quick and well laid out.

  • Although this 9-step sequence may be fairly simple in terms of what a modular synthesizer can do, I still consider this video to be one of the best videos on YouTube as far as demonstrating the "musical capabilities" of a modular synthesizer.

Although the ARP 2500 & Moog Modular synths may be more basic and less complex than the modular synths made by Buchla & Serge, IMHO I think they are superior in terms of reproducing more traditional musical instruments!

    Your ARP 2500 sounds amazing!

  • @MrCamelneck I can only spot 8 steps.

  • @davedagreat69

You're absolutely right, it is an 8-step sequence produced on a 10-step sequencer. I accidentally hit the "9" key instead of the "8" key when I made the post. I actually noticed the typo right after I made the post and I thought about making a correction. However, I didn't think it was worth the waste of time. ;-)

  • this stuff sounds awesome, agree with mantramindware, you should definetly record that

  • Someone at Warp sign this guy immediately!!!!!!

  • @SPFXsynthesisers I agree 100%! Let me know when it happens because I want this track on a well-mastered 12" vinyl. Take my previous suggestion just to add an extra couple layers and put it on good-quality vinyl. Yes I would pay $15.00 for it! It is a well-conceived and fairly well-executed track! I really like it! Its simplicity is its greatest strength. It's the essence of all the greatest techno!

  • Nice! Keep going.

  • sounds great, nice sequence.

  • give us LP :))

  • @fainasdizainas his album Tilted was relased on LP. I have one. you'd be satisfied.

  • this sounds so damn awesome. I would totally buy a CD of this. please more!

  • makes me think.......... soup

  • if anyone wants this song on their ipod - i have taken the liberty of turning it into an AAC audio file that you can download here: mediafire (it wont let me put .com) /?ga1k2awj0imgnuo (If this is not ok with you David, i will immediately remove the link.) Of course all credit goes to David Morley.

  • you call that small jam! thats amazing jesus. nice job

  • damn no cabinet wings?

  • @TheDLovas A pair of them just out of sight!

  • I agree with all the positive responses. Great job and nice touches. Nice changes and excellent pattern programming on the 808. I'm very impressed with your little "jam". I agree 100% with the statement that you should get this properly mastered and pressed. If this were available as a 12" single vinyl slab I would buy it. Maybe add some upper-register synth pads or sustained chords that follow your changes and it would be excellente! Just the right amount of stuff and not overly tweeked. Nice!

  • This is absolutely outstanding!

  • Dave like this panning delay effects, this is all the eventide unit?..Sounds dynamic and progressive.....a pleasure. thanks...

  • Hi Buchla,

why don't you burn this music on CD and sell it. It sounds so great why not produce it! No one out there can do it better!

  • @mantramindware kind words! Thanks..

I am working on new material so who knows!

    David

  • @buchla300 As soon as I saw this (without seeing the username), I knew it was you.

Looking forward to some new music Mr Morley!

  • @buchla300 i agree. You do have some material on itunes correct. i found someone named David Morley there, and a Buchla was mentioned. Anyway - even a single would be great, because this tune is stuck in my head

  • Cool sequence and great beat :D

  • La classe, thanks ;-)

  • @equinoxoz Merci!

  • They don't make 'em like they used to.

  • Hi, just one thing..... Welcome to neuronaluniverse's channel

  • I wonder how this would look on stage.

    Mesmerizing loop you got there!

  • How many of these still working machines exist in the world? I bet very few engineers are able to service these relics nowadays. Priceless!

  • It makes me laugh when i think that we used to pay so much money for hardware synthesizers that were takin so much space and now we can cheaply get software synths being usually a piece of shit. Imo the vintage synthesizers sounded way better than the software used nowadays and nothin digitall will replace them. Also the people who were using them were proffesionals, because a mere guy couldnt buy such expensive thing. Nowadays every idiot can download ilegal software and compose a piece of shit

  • Not only is this an OUTSTANDING demonstration of fine electronic music but this 2500 is working 100% ... that in of itself is a major statement...

  • How come you're the only person that seems to operate a modular synth properly? 90% of the youtube videos here are people just making noise on $6000+ equipment...

  • @basementdweller1 Thx! I'm sure there are a few more somewhere on youtube!

I will try and do some more videos soon.

  • @buchla300 When it comes to regular or vintage synths, yeah, good sounds. I guess modulars are just to expensive for regular musicians, so they're basically only left to the collectors.

  • @basementdweller1 It is true that these older modulars are too valuable really. I sold the ARP and Buchla recently as I bought a house and as a musician needed as much cash as possible... sad but true:-( I had owned them for nearly 20 years. I still have a Serge and Polyfusion modular and a few other nice synths though, so shouldn't complain.

  • @buchla300 Buchla is back in business in Berkeley California.... perhaps you could re-purchase a beautiful Buchla modular synth

  • @basementdweller1 Couldn't agree more! There are some lousy demos on amazing vintage gear all over YouTube.

  • @basementdweller1 yes I agree, most people putting videos of synths demos here are just wasting bandwidth. Pure nonsense for the most part. Why do these people get such great synths if they don't even know how the hell they work....

  • is this on ebay? hahaha

  • great sound!

  • shit, now i need to go to a psicologist...

  • Yeah. Sexy, dark, strong and spatial bassline. It's what I need ;-)

  • How cool was that! I just saw one for sale for 25000 on eBay.... Fuck cars!

  • excellent :D ! very groovy :P

  • Great vid with great music.Very useful to figure out a bit of the vast 2500's potential.

  • Wonderful !!! This is Music , which I like to hear 24 hours on the day .... The ARP ist a very rare Instrument like many other modular systems . Never any emulation software can change with this old , good instruments .... I d like more to see and hear about this wonderful song or improvisation

  • Cheers!

  • What a great tune! The Odyssey is the only thing I dare even to dream of...

  • Wow. What a synth! What a groove! Blissfully minimal. One of the best synth videos on the internet. Absolutely love it.

  • Wonderful and beautiful. I am absolutely fascinated by this synth and its fabulous sound and universes. This piece of music is a very good expression of it !

  • @ Viroco

Yeah, man, I keep telling the wife we really, really need a 2500 for contacting the aliens, and you know what? It feels as if she doesn't trust me one hundred percent on this.

    Unfair!

  • how much is it for a decent vintage synth like the Buchla or this for instance.

    ....awesome by the way!!

  • Thx!

Prices vary depending on which modules are in a system, but I think an ARP 2500 would be $20,000 these days.

  • Hey Buchla..thanks for taking out the time to reply.

....Looks like just socks again for me from the wife then this Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This synthesizer have a beautiful sound.

I have read somwhere that the Arp 2600 are superior to the 2500, but I dont know...

  • They are very different to be honest. The 2600 is so useful and flexible in a relatively small package. It sounds brilliant for percussive stuff. The 2500 has a funkier and bouncier basic sound to my ears. A bit finer and more controlled. The controls are more accurate and of course some modules are much more powerful than those on the 2600 (although the 2600 has some very useful modules the 2500 lacks, like lag and voltage processing, reverb, pre-amp)

Both are as top notch instruments!

  • BTW the ARP2500 was used in the film 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' to communicate with the aliens.

Also, in answer to Coneman3, an ARP2500 recently (October 2009) was sold on EBay for 12,000 USDollars.

    Monster piece of kit.

  • That was a single wing cabinet (which is half a main system) so crazy money.

  • Old School analogue synthesizers ROCK!

    F#*K digital! Let's go retro!

  • Nice. I bet that synth is worth a lot.

  • Just Curious, What are the notes in the sequence if you don't mind me asking?

I can't get it out of my head even when i am away from the video

  • I really can't remember. If I get a chance I'll transcribe it.

  • Tangerine Dream....nice!

  • Very Trippy

  • I am just getting into this realm> In my layman opinion it sounds very good

  • Damn that sounds great!

  • Que bonito,very nice.

  • Superb!

  • holy!

  • Nice overall sequence. I think the FM got a little edgy at times.

  • nice Sequence!

  • Thanks!

  • Sounds great!

  • Thanks John!

  • I think I just tangerine dreamed my jeans

  • LOL. That was a good one.

  • Video's like this really put the claims of digital and software synths to the test.

  • I've seen this machine twice, at Wisseloord, in the Netherlands. It should have been around 1972 I think. I was 13 years old. Amazing.

    :-)

  • Is that a Minimoog I see to the left of the 2500?

  • Hi

Yes it is. An R.A.Moog minimoog (the first 100 or so are a bit different and it's one of them)

  • wish i had one of these, i only have an ARP solus. I planning on building my own modular or sumthin like a minimoog.

  • Solus is a good synth. I quite fancy getting one. Neat case design.

I think the Cwejman stuff is interesting. Very high quality, but not cheap (which is why I haven't got any yet!)

  • Yeah, cwejman modules look sweet.

  • I'll trade you all my cwejmans for your buchla.

    :) hahaha

  • Let me get back to you on that ;-)

  • I dream of a 2500

Thanks for posting - it let's we dreamers at least look and listen even if we can't play

  • Shame that 2500s are so expensive. Cool video. Can I have more ambient Buchla tracks?

  • the 2500 is a beast of a modular. I can still remember using one, which probably needed a good clean and polish, so to speak. It was noisy and a bit "off", but that sound was sheer heaven.

i thought you had the optional "wings" too? Im sure i saw them in another one of your vids?

  • Yes, I have 2 wing cabinets too. Just no space really!

Need to rearrange the workspace a bit.

  • very nice!!

  • thx!

  • gravitas

  • not bad for an old bloke! ;)

  • Thanks! I had to stop as my bag was full...

  • Awesome sound!

    very nice demo

    5*****

  • Thx again!

The video and audio are one cycle of the sequencer out (1 bar) I'll try and fix that!

  • very nice sound and demo again! THX for that!

  • my pleasure!

  • Lovely!

  • great!

  • That thing sounds amazing
