@eddiedobie That's wonderful! Yes, you can see photos her Martha's home (in our home) here: zedisdead.smugmug.com (see the albums titled: "New Custom Dog Beds by Cushion Works!" and "New Dining Table/Chairs, Fish & Turtle" for images of Martha's tank)
@11wormbig thank you! She is the only one in our family that has not shown any visible signs of aging in the 20+ yrs we've had her. Still has the cutest face - no graying! :)
@spawntan17 Reeves generally like a warmer tank - I keep Martha's at around 78-80 degrees most of the year. I do drop it lower, to room temp., in the winter for a few months for her to slow down a bit (but not so that she's actually hibernating). Our house is in a very mild climate but we do not have heat/indoor climate control either, so it can drop to the 50s inside in the winter. Her basking area (out of the water) is much warmer.
@gekperson Normally, Reeves turtles grow to just 5 inches and stay pretty small, but she's a big girl -- about 9-10 inches long. Her tank is 150 gallons.
@Sky300 - yeah.. the younger they are the better to train them.. My turtle likes getting her back scratched too :) check out my channel to see some of my videos :)
No, she just came out to have a little walk and get her shell scratched. Sometimes she goes outside for a walk in the garden when I'm cleaning her tank. She lives in a 150 gallon tank with a filter, water heater, and UV lighting -- it is mostly water, but there's an area for her to dry dock and "sunbathe". She comes out from time to time, but she lives in her set-up.
Just a clean/warm large tank to live in with a dry dock area, good filtration, good lighting (always UVa/b full spectrum lighting for sunbathing), a varied diet of natural foods (fed every other day or so -- not too much food), and lots of love and attention. I add some sea salt to her tank at every water change - that might be useful? I think we just have a special bond.
How funny! Congrats on having her 30+ years! I have a reeves and he is 20 years old. When I tell people that they can't believe it. I've never tried scratching his shell like that though so I'll have to give it a try and see what he does.
Actually - she really started this whole thing: she will follow me around and she even crawls up in my lap to get pets! It's pretty cute. She also likes to play in running water -- it's adorable. I have to get a video of her doing this to upload next.
oh... my... goodness! she's awesome! I'll be adopting a reeves turtle soon! can't wait! i heard quite a few stories that these guys love getting their shells scratched! too funny!
They really are special -- most turtles are not nearly as outgoing and friendly as the Reeves. I have two Three-Toed Box Turtles that I adore, but they are not anything like Martha as for genuinely enjoying human contact/interaction.
wow. i applaud you for this happy turtle. 30 yrs old! congrads.. many more to come.
and to answer the above question, yes, turtles are lots of work. they live very long. and are not hardy animals. never take one out of the wild! help save the world
I've a 15 yr old Reeves. Yours is a lot larger than mine. I have a male and he's about 4-5 inches long. He's not as friendly as yours either. I rescued him from a family friend a couple months ago and since he's now being fed and cared for properly, he's getting friendlier. What do you feed your turtle?
Live earthworms, silkworms, butterworms, beef heart, chunks of organic/pastured raw muscle meat, snails, the rare live goldfish, a frozen food made by San Francisco Bay Brand for fish with all kinds of great ingredients, and pellets (I use a brand without chemical preservatives).

i have 2 questions - how big do these turtles get and how many gallons of a tank do you have?
gekperson 2 years ago

kasiex 2 years ago
@gekperson the can get to 4-5 inches
the turtle in the video is probably from Japan cuz Japanese reeves turtles r larger then chinese ones
they can be kept in a 20 gallon if 5 inches but a bigger tank is better!

I guess old girls need love too. So cute, she obviously loves you...you've done well
FiestyCat86 2 years ago
the reason she likes that is because when they mate the boy moves up and down on her so it gives her a nice feeling
