While I enjoy and respect the women's game, it's not any more "fundamental" than the mens game. The WNBA turns the ball over just as much as the men do in the NBA, the number of assists are virtually identical, and regarding shooting, both leagues shoot free throws at a 74% rate. Men receive more sports coverage because they're faster, stronger, and more capable in the "major" sports in America. Statistically, the best women in the world are about on par with good high school (male) teams.
As a coach who has coached both men and women, my personal observations is that when I get women that have played the game before they are generally more fundamentally sound than most guys that have played before. Guys are more NBA/And 1 oriented. I asked the team (guys) that I am coaching now how many of them have seen Hoosiers. 2 of 10. A few knew of it but said it was boring. That is the general mentality I find. Not to say it can't be fixed, just that I seem to do it more often with guys.
I think what's sad, is that the WNBA is not getting enough exposure unless something "like this" happens....other than that, the WNBA doesn't get much exposure on ESPN or other places...you have to go find it rather it being served to you like the NFL, NBA, and MLB.
Women's sports never get coverage in this country because of the mind set. No matter how many times the guys have to put asterisks in the record books for drug enhancement, or no show games and practices because they want a new contract because someone else negotiated a better deal on a different team, or shoot themselves in the leg or rape a pagent contestant, they draw the crowd. Women's basketball is one of the few remaining sports that is still pure, too bad that is not enough.
It's not that it's not enough...it's just the fact that it's not out in the front like the NBA. It's not played almost year round, like the NBA, nor does it has the kind of endorsing (like video gaming and whatnot). I know there are plenty of women who like playing or watching basketball....but there are some things that doesn't make the WNBA attractive. Sure, you don't need to dunk to make the whole game exciting every time....but it does help.
The reason it is not getting the same exposure is the majority of the country will not watch it. They hear womens basketball & picture an inferior product. Then there is ESPN who will usually cover the score of the All Star game and the playoffs, but bury the rest of the season. Then there is the sad tv deal that has them on channels that many people do not get. All of these are decisions made by men. Funny Don King was able to promote a washed up Mike Tyson, but no one can make this appealing?
I have seen and coached it for over almost 2 decades. Women block shots all the time if they are good.
As far as the rediculous argument about dunks, that is what ruined the sport. The game was invented and designed around the concept of TEAM skills and ball movement. Now these NBA morons have made it seem like you have all these mad skill sets to play. You need basic fundamentals, and a mindset that will allow you to help others shine. I have yet to see that in any guys program.
Not sure what you are referring to. Shooting percentage is higher because they can dunk. The fact is the NBA & guys bball in general is tainted by the "me" factor where guys have to look good. Women grasp the concept of the team and sharing the spotlight. There are exceptions to every rule, but I have coached enough to know I would never coach guys again.
If it goes beyond fundamentals it is because they have given up on that part of the game. Kobe is the biggest "ME" player in the league and a prime example of what is wrong with sports. Can he shoot? Of coure. Does he make his teammates better? Not really. Michael Jordan made guys like Luke Longley and Steve Kerr stars, proven by his absence and eventual return. I've been coaching too many years for you to give me lessons on the game.
whoa oh noooooo candance is the best my idol and favorite basketball player period but thats not right, she got suspended for 1 game and plenette got four sorry candance but you started it. BUT they BOTH should have got suspended for four games. And WTF how all the other people Shock And Spark get suspended for off the bench(excuse my french)shit) they was all stoping the fight before got hurt
Pearson clearly tried to bully Candice because she is a rookie. That is BS. The fact of the matter is since Laimbier took over the Shock he has made the comment more than once that he is bringing the Piston's "Bad Boy" attitude to the team. Guys like him have destroyed the integrity & image of the NBA. He needs to be banned from the WNBA and send Pearson and any other gang bangers with him. Ghetto ball is played on the outdoor courts and there are no refs. Only cops.
I've been in a couple arguments during games, but I've never been in a fight. bsktballchick315 is right about players' feet getting tangled. IT HAPPENS! This fight could've been prevented if Candace Parker wasn't so dang cocky.
The video shows the elbow and the over the top excessive boxing out that led to this. Then Pearson charges up on her with a streetball attitude. If that's her game send her to Rutgers part and she can play in the And 1 league. As a coach with 13 years experience I will tell you that players are a reflection of the coach. This wreaks of Laimbere and he needs to be thrown out of the league. He is waste of space.
theyre feet got tangled up...happens to everybody at least once if you play basketball enough...no need to act like this...leslie is right she is suppose to be a role model for the girls of america...she is not muhammed ali she is lisa leslie
This was a lot more than feet being tangled. Pearson clearly initiated this altercation. That said you are right that they should not have acted like this. I doubt the fight would have escalated as it did if Pearson had not charged up on a fallen Parker. The league seems to agree with me.
If you consider the fact that Candace was probably recieving some rough shots from multiple players from the Shock (not just Pearson),yes, I will agree that Pearson may have been the culprit. However, if you look at the slo mo between 3:21 and 3:26, Parker pulls Pearson down and takes a swing while Pearson is on the ground. I think its a bunch of "garbage" that Lisa and Candace, obviously the two faces of the WNBA, only got 1 game suspensions.

Which brings up a point. There should not have been suspensions. There should have been arrests made for aggravated assault!

Apparently the league agrees with me as evidenced by the 4 game suspension to Pearson.

No! Plenette started it she pushed Candace away from the ball and tried to hit her back. What was Candace supposed to do!

Lisa Leslie totally swung at Mahorn. She is playing the victim. She is as much to blame as everyone else.
