Travelled on the Dalesman from Hellifield Carlisle and return on 31 August 2008 behind 70013. Had an inspection of the footplate at Carlisle. I have fired steam locos since 1980 on ex Tas Govt Railways M and MA Class Pacifics throughout most of Tasmania. Watching firemans technique was good. At least he didn't have to suffer from a bucking and swaying footplate and missing the hole, as is usually the case on Tasrail metals
What a video,i have watched hundreds of steam vids, all bringing back my younger days, but this one really hit the mark i just felt as though i was that fireman,it brought it all back in shovelfulls, and i could feel the heat and the swaying, not to mention the sight and sound.Number one for me,one to keep and savour as a reminder of my prime.Thankyou for cheering up an old codger
I've only just discovered this gem of a video and can only echo the earlier comments. If there was a prize for YouTube railway video of the year this film would walk away with it. Tremendous. Austin
Fantastic! the speed over Ais Gill reminds me of the BR specials that ran over the S&C when locos would be challenging for the blue ribbon. I'm pleased that the slacks have more or less gone now! S&C here i come!!!
Only just found this and what can you say but fabulous. Shooting on the footplate is not easy but this really conveys the effort. Great Craig, but I though you were firing????
i was at the front of the 2nd coach on the firemans side and remember you filming this i hoped you would put this on youtube and you have brillant!!.best railtour i have been on and a outstanding display of footplatemanship.ais gill on the return was topclass.

Fine performance - how much was the load (coaches / tons) and the cut-off being used?

One of the finest of footplate scenes on board 70013 over the Settle and Carlisle! Marvelous work!
