@MightyJosh1985 Actually Keating put a stop to high interest rates of the 70 and 80s by ending centralised wage fixing and introducing the incomes accord. Therefore ending wage breakouts and inflation. Keating was a champion of the free market. People often forget that interest rates were once capped at 14% during the 70s although the real figure would have been 22%. Since 1991 when keating was still PM interest rates have fallen and inflation has been dead for over 20 years.
@MightyJosh1985 Also Keating was awarded the worlds best treasurer by euro money magazine in the 80s for his economic reforms to open up the Australian economy. Thank you that someone had the bloody guts to reform our economy. Look at the opportunities we all have because of a free market. Howard came in and only made 1 good reform in 11 years [GST] and at the same time soaked up the mining royalties and pissed it all out in middle class welfare.
Keating was a good PM who passed important reforms but all these Laborite commenters need to come to terms with the fact that he and Hawke left the country with an insane amount of debt that Howard paid off
There's nothing in todays politics to match Keating at his pugnacious best. This withering attack on John Howard, exposing all his failures, whilst he sits there cringeing, seemingly, arrow ridden, is Keating classic. Keating was 'The Greatest', at taking out his opponents liver with an ice pick, and making it seem hilarious. Howard probably still has nightmares about the hidings Keating gave him. At least I hope so.
He also left the highest ever amount of cash to a new government in history, He left $66Bn after inheriting a $90Bn debt which Rudd spent on Plasma TV's for the public. Ah how Keating would cringe seeing himself carry on like that now.
@ez7777777 ....ah one more thing you forgot 7x7. John Howard has just recently been awarded with an Honour of Merit by the Queen. A very elite club and one of the very few Australians ever to receive one. That's something else funny boy keating would be absolutely cringing over.
@ez7777777 For howard to have that much cash in the bank means that we were over taxed, or infrastructure was left dead. In howards case, an unhealthy mix of both.
@imlay1992 Foresight was Howards thing, The states were never richer and we had funds to prepare for the inevitable European recession, until Ruddy bought everyone a plasma tv with it.
Old Keating can eat his words now. Howard, Most popular PM, Most economically productive PM, Fastest writedown of debt in history, Highest acceptance of tertiary education in Aus history, Lowest jobless figures in 30 years, Highest exports in history, highest non-union wages in history, Oversaw the biggest tax reform in history and not afraid to take a risk to help the people, even if it cost him his own seat.
@imlay1992 Percentage Pollwise Whitlam was the most popular PM before his election and Howard was the most popular PM elected at an election requiring compulsory voting. 2004 was the election i believe (Both Houses). Hawke was the most popular PM amongst working class Australians ($25,000 and under) in '83.
Also, undignified swearing in a post, makes me realise you Probably have a very low IQ and dont have the ability to research your answers correctly before you post them.
@ez7777777 Howard was never all that popular, except for around election time, he spruiked "ill give you a bigger tax cut than them" - which was another lie.
@ez7777777 all due to the reforms set by keating and hawke in the 1st place, john howard was the biggest freeloading PM ever, if you really think all that happened because little johnny made it happen you are absolutely kidding yourself. The howard government rode the mining boom wave for years, did nothing while the economy steadily rose and than imposed the single worst policy in the history of australian politics in workchoices. But you can believe what you want there pal.
@stonesmad ...there's only one reason. We all had had a gutfull of mr funnyboy Keating and his labor party sending the country broke. You understand now?
@LadyboyAgogo ...I don't know what you are or where you come from. I'd just like to congradulate you for telling the truth. The clown funny boy Keating was nothing but a self centred goon. Yes under his rule us poor home buyers were slugged with a ridiculous rate of 17%. Idiots like mlawren7 make stupid comments like Howards policies didn't stop a single boat....yeah right...is that why labor is now considering Naru? You're right LadyboyAgogo...Keating was nothing but a self centred WANKER!!
@DMAN123223 LOL! Yeah, i'm sorry also. They annoy me so very much, i mean, at the end of the day, all politicians are only for themselves, invested interests, none of them truly care about the average bloke, let's face it..... they don't really care.
Seeing Paul Keating OWN you silly retards for 13 years, and seeing the little coconut lose his OWN seat makes me proud to be an Australian. In one word... Fantastic!
louty, louty, louty. You're not intelligent enough to challenge me. You must be a Paul Keating fan? You do like seeing Keating lay the smackdown on Coward and Cockstello! I've never seen you on Coward's fan page... Oops, that's right...the coconut doesn't have one. LOOOOOOL!!!
This is the intelligence of loutondacoast, the stupid retarded bald, big eared, little fucker sent himself a previous sledge comment...talking to himself! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Fuck off from here, no-one cares about you or your worthless conservative, fucked up party! Oh, and stop copying me deadbeat... come up with some of your own material fagboy! Have you got all of that now? Good! ''DICKHEAD!''.
Keating was THE man.. I loved him then and still love him now, scything wit, extraordinary intelligence.. Howard looked a bit nervous in his chair.. he had nothing to say that could compare to Keating in full roar, obviously enjoying himself immensely ...
@dirtyfatarseblurtingENEMA ....the I.Q. of it .....Muhahahahahahahahahahahah!!
on behalf of all Australian taxpayers..."get off your GREAT BIG FAT ARSE, stop slurping on rum and coke, stop stuffing tim tams down your ugly throat, stop shovelling pizza straight into your gullet, stop crunching on packets of chips, stop slouching over the pc monitor, get up offa your smelly behind and get out and make something of yourself...GET A FREAKING JOB!! ...you useless waste of space !!!

Muhahahahahahahahahahahahaha!! We know you have no friends on here or anywhere else for that matter. You're a nobody who runs, a worthless business...hahahahahahahahaha!!
Keating help take us through thhe early 90s recession and laid the ground work for the prosperity during the Howard years. His reforms in the 80s and 90s have created the most flexable economy in the world and one of the only economies to have resisted the global recession.
Keating, the man that gave us " the recession we had to have ". He will only be remembered for his poisonous invective and as a mediocre PM. Howard presided over a decade of prosperity. What did Keating give us ? the worst recession since the great depression. The only thing bigger than his ego is his mouth !
@2004DAZZA ur a bloody moron, howard presided over a decade of prosperity because of paul keating and bob hawke, nothing to do with what he did which was stuff all. If you understood the meaning behind the phrase "the recession we had to have" than you wouldnt be dribbling crap, Keating invested in the future.
@raff23 I undrestand the phrase very well you CRETIN ! Even Bob Hawke thought it was stupid. In a recent interview Hawke stated " When i heard him make the remark i knew it would be an Albatross around his neck for the rest of his political life ". Many Australians committed suicide during this recession. The only reason Keating won the election was because he was up against a political lightweight in Hewson. Also the Libs payed off Labors massive debt you ignorant fool, So fuck off !
@2004DAZZA Paid off the debt, using Keating's 50 economic reforms and the mining boom. You expect me to believe gst and work choices, one of which obliterated from policy because it was so crooked, the only two economical reforms they made drew the economy into surplus? Do you even understand why recession happens? If you took a laxative perhaps I could bury you in a matchbox.
@DMAN123223 Here's just one example of Howards reforms ' SIMPLE SIMON ' . When he took over we had some of the most unproductive Ports in the Western World. He smashed the stranglehold of the corrupt waterfront unions resulting in massive increases in productivity. I don't expect you to give the him credit for anything because it's clear your a Labor lackey. If a hungry Cannibal cut open your skull and took out your brain he wouldn't find enough to spread on a water cracker ! Try again genius
@2004DAZZA Smashing unions? Sounds like work choices, but I guess that's what they're best at, ruining the rights and democracy of the workers. Really, that fits into the same umbrella as work choices so it's still two policies. The best thing that they ever did was do nothing, because that took Paul Keating's policy to work, creating the so called Liberal surplus. Oh ouch, alliteration is my one weakness.
@DMAN123223 What a feeble reply, so union corruption is ok, my God your an idiot. Also when it came to an election Howard buried him. Here's some advice, stop living in the past. This is 2011 and your beloved Labor is on the nose like never before. Nearly 70% of Australians think you suck. Your going to get your ass kicked at the next election just like NSW Labor. But don't despair, you can always come on youtube and toss off to all the Keating videos you like. Now go & be boring elsewhere !
@2004DAZZA So you think work choices was a fine policy? After all it got rid of union corruption right? And what exactly prompted you to come to the present? Out of examples of economic reform? Truth is, yeah I hate the current Labor party, next election Liberal will likely get my vote. But Paul Keating's reform of the floating dollar, the privatisation of Gov run busyness and deregulation policy amongst others brought our economy into the first world. Howard buried Keating, using his policy.
@DMAN123223 The base of your entire argument has been Howard didn't make any significant reforms. That assertion is " BULLSHIT " and highlights your ignorance. If Keating was so great why did he only last one term as PM? Like most Labor hacks you're fixated with work choices. Is Fair Work Australia looking after workers rights? Ask the Qantas workers or Victorian nurses what they think of them. Finally, if you think Keatings remark " this is the recession we had to have " was ok your bonkers !
@2004DAZZA GST/work choices are significant reform, but are the only two. That's the basis. Still waiting for an example of what was so good that John did. Keating lasted one term due to the temporary set backs his policies put, the huge eco boom under him created the bust, yet were the building blocks for the lib's surplus. It's evident from the lack of policy change. The long term benefits outweigh the downside and that's why "this is a recession we had to have." Fair work is the lesser evil.
@DMAN123223. Iv'e already highlighted waterfront reform which brought about huge economic and productivity benefits. The GST resulted in the abolition of sales tax and provided a cash bonanza for the states to spend on health, education & infrastructure. They abolished Labors job destroying unfair dismissal laws so employers could sack unreliable, unproductive staff without the threat of being sued. The Libs created a surplus because they don't spend money like a " drunken sailor " as Labor do !
@2004DAZZA Right so just GST and Work practice law (ie work choices). I don't think that work practice law can compare to the floating dollar let alone the other 49 reforms. The first federal surplus was under Keating as treasurer, Howard had huge inflation and high unemployment. It wasn't 'til Peter snapped his fingers when he realised he didn't need to change much after Keating. The gov is spending like a drunken sailor, but not Keating. "threat of being sued" uh oh! It might be a fair trial!
@DMAN123223 Get a grip mate ! The recession we had to have. Tell that to the people who lost their homes and businesses. Tell that to the people who lost their jobs or had family members commit suicide because of the recession we had to have. The remark has been condemned by people on both sides of politics including Bob Hawke. And your continued defence of it only proves what a '' ROLLED GOLD DICKHEAD '' you really are !
@2004DAZZA There's an extensive article on The Age about why it needed to be done. As Paul Kelly said "It was perhaps the most stupid remark of his career and it nearly cost him the prime ministership. However, it is largely true, the boom begat the recession." But it simply comes to what is the point of the present if there's nothing to the future? Of course, I'd doubt you would know the meaning of those words too. Bob Hawke understood why people wouldn't want to hear it, but why it was true.
@DMAN123223 You still here ! What a pile of vacuous drivel. You believe what you wan't to believe. I've got better things to do with my time than deal with your vapid, inane ill-informed opinions. History has shown who was the more successful PM and that is clearly John Howard. Have a nice life !
@loutondacoast ....what's happened to your hero lunceo100 little enema? It must be devastating not to have someone to crawl to, and tell how much you think how great he is, and tell him how much you think his comments are so freaking unreal....because you've got no friends and you thought loonster was your mate! Replies to his comments like hehehehe, good on ya mate, slurp slurp, yes i'll agree to anything you say luneco. I'm just a hopeless case and i need someone like you to make me alive !
The evidence speaks for itself loser... have a look on every political page you are on... you get shouted down and exposed as a douchebag! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Keep paying for your useless party moron, they like using losers like you. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
@EnarPilrith1 ...Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the circus of the enemas off their faces on Bundaberg Rum and what ever else they consume. Introducing little Enema...the one that is grovelling and crying cause her hero luneco has gone forever. She is so absolutely embarrased that the leader of the doomed labor party has now the lowest ratings in the polls since they came to being. She only reads the replies that she wants to hear and doesn't get the full picture cause IT can't hack it !!!
@filthylittleenema1 ..ridiculed by who! You are a joke, give us an example, name someone besides your stupid little self. Slammed on every political page WTF are you talkin bout? Runs a worthless business..yeah right! Twenty three years of total commitment, employing six individuals, with no looking back and a lot to look foward to. You only come to this page to get your silly little self centred kicks. I come here cause we hate labors guts and what they've done to our country..almost wrecked it
@loutondacoast Quick loonster... i took the piss out of your big eared hero on another site... the one where a customer called Mr.Maggot a ''DICKHEAD!'' Ahh, bless that guy...
@jpilot101 You're joking right? Keating fundamentally built the modern Australian economy and the reforms from his leadership are the reason why we're a stable and rich country today. Fundamentally there was turbulence (e.g., rise in unemployment for a short period) because that's what happens when you restructure an economy - look at Thatcher's restructuring of Britain for a similar example - when you restructure an economy it has to go through an adaption period.
From 1991-1996 the GDP rose miserably from $329b to $403b under a Keating government. When Howard was voted in he started cleaning up the Keating mess by putting in hard measures such as the GST with the GDP remaining low until 2002. This is the adaption period and clearly had nothing to do with Keating. From then the GDP rose from $380b to $856b. This was a result of economic reform to encourage entrepreneurs, trading with profitable nations and cutting unnecessary expenses from the budget.
@jpilot101 To make those statements you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Keating is the principal architect of the modern Australian economy, and no amount of right-wing denial will change that. We have had continuous low inflation and high-growth since Keating's reforms ~20 years ago. If you honestly think the GST built the Australian economy, then, you really do only deserve to be ignored my friend. The GST does not even compare with Keating's hard work.
@brentoneccles I'm somewhat in a state of shock that left-wing backers actually believe Keating was an asset to Labour and that you actually take credit for the successful Howard policies. Talk all you like but it's the Australian people who voted Keating out for his economic mismanagement and they also know that if they want prosperity then it is the Coalition they need to vote for. BTW since 2008 the GDP has fallen. There is a haunting pattern for the ALP economists.
@jpilot101 Everything you just said in that comment is demonstrably dumb and wrong. If you don't understand that Keating virtually created the modern Australian economy, and he alone, then you don't understand Australian history - this has nothing to do with politics or bias it's just simple history. And on GDP falling since 2008, that's not quite true. Revenues have fallen, and so forth, because of, gosh, that big economic crisis the world had. Apparently you've been under a rock.
I invited you to present an argument(using legitimate examples) for what Keating did that makes you so comfortable to credit him with Howards' economic work. However you failed to do so and have now scooped to the bottom of the barrel by starting with personal attacks. This is likely because there is nothing beneficial Keating did. I leave you now having consolidated my stance that this is a debate that you can't win and that the next election will haunt left wing members for another long spell.
@jpilot101 LOL. Howard did nothing mate. I can go on endlessly about Keating's work (none of which Howard dared undo, by the way) and some important examples: ending centralised wage fixing, floating the dollar, superannuation, APEC and bringing in a low-inflation high growth period which is still going to this day. All done by Keating not Howard.
Howard introduced GST (Keating initially had the idea in mind, but droped it), stopped boats from coming and then he introduced work choices which indeed was a political suicide.
@Jabitout He didn't stop a single boat from coming, that was just spin. Work-choices was a nightmare that resulted in my girlfriend (now wife) getting sacked from her waitress job after her boss sexually propositioned her, and might have seen me go to jail after I punched him. John Howard was, I'm happy to say, by far the worst PM this country has ever seen, a horrible little man of no discernible talent for anything good.
@jpilot101 Now if you please, explain what Howard did that supposedly brought about these things when Keating had already done the hard yards? What specific policies did Howard pursue that built the Australian economy? Even Costello said the man had little grip of good economic policy. That's why he left Keating's reforms in place. He at least had the sense to know what good work was when someone else had done it for him.
@jpilot101 And please stop pretending that respect for Hawke and Keating is a left-wing thing. Even the most conservative media outlets in Australia, a marked example being The Australian, credit Hawke and especially Keating with being the principal architect of the modern Australian economy. So please, keep coming out with proof that you don't understand what has made this nation great.
@jpilot101 All I have to say re: your comments on post-2008 Australia is pretty simple. On all wealth indicators things have gotten better year by year, despite a major global crisis. Australia, in-fact, since Howard was turfed out of office and we have a decent Government back has risen in rankings on virtually all economic indicators both domestically and internationally.
@jpilot101 Seriously almost everything the Howard Government took credit for was because of Keating's work. I've got no bones about saying that because it's absolutely true. I can point to many, many reforms from Keating and Hawke that are directly responsible for bringing Oz from developing country to developed country. You can't do that with Howard's 10 years without being dishonest or giving him credit for other people's work.
Thus far you've given me nothing other than dismay over the facts that Labour faithful hate to hear. Paul Keating did make attempts to bring the economy back to something competitive however the cost of living and GDP showed his efforts were in vain. It was GST that stabilized the economy and delivered a budgets surplus which in turn flowed onto the Australian people. Come back with some evidence and I'm open for debate but until then I have no interest in continuing a debate you can't win.
I agree, the current crop of government hacks is nothing like PJK but there are some shining lights coming through the ranks. Can we please get a special guest appearance in Question Time with PJK instead of the boring crap we are currently getting!!!! If PJK addressed the OPOsition you would have the honourable TONY F.N. SCABbott sitting in the corner with his DUNCE CAP ON Sucking his thumb and CRYING Mummy, Mummy, Mummy - Why is there so many DUMB FN SHEEP VOTERS LISTENING to his CRAP!!!!!
Keating is one of those rare, brilliant, forward thinking people. During his leadership Labour made so many policy changes that made Australia a better place. He may have only had 11 years but he made them count. I guess we should be thankful Howard barely changed a thing in his time.
@Collsism ..absolute rot ! It's Labor not Labour and he lasted 4yrs not 11yrs. Try looking up what Howard actually did in HIS 11yrs. He was the second longest serving P.M. and he did some wonderful things for the this country...."barely changed a thing" ...you're a joke!
@loutondacoast Yes, I mixed up facts in my post. Truth is Keating was only PM for 4 years yet did more than Howard managed in 11. Howard did things but not much that made Australia better. He sold off government assets, introduced a big new tax & enjoyed good economic times. Sarcastically :"Wow. How did they end up with a surplus?" Howard certainly wasn't forward thinking. What did Howard/Costello do with the surplus to move Australia forward?
@loutondacoast Destruction of health system. Destruction of education system. Fake dead tree planting tax scams. Calling for all Australians to fear and hate Muslims. Yeah all great stuff no doubt.
At least i have been up front, i hate both political parties so cut the crap louty! You honestly believe you get a fair go under neocons... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Let's see, workchoices cutting wages and conditions making you sign on for less money,(threatening the worker),work for the dole, covering up true unemployment figures (threatening the people). Cutting spending on infrastructure and hospital's (killing people). They introduced the highest tax... well, ever!! Oh, and they warmonger.
@louty Who have i been talking to then for the past 2 weeks. You're the conservative, brainwashed individual. You're the one coming onto here talking about Coward/Maggot, and how great they are *LOLZ* ... IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO REDEEM YOURSELF!! WAKE UP TO THE LIES OF CONSERVATIVES!! THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU!! WAKE UP!!
Costello was too gutless to challenge the coconut for the leadership, we all know no-one thought much of the tool (even his own party) *smirks*, but at least it would have made him look a fraction better, as for the rest, Maggot, sloppy Joe, etc... well, they're all a bunch of scumpiles who wouldn't have a chance in hell. More importantly, they don't give a shit about you louty, *sniff, sniff* they actually prey on fools like you for their vote. ''WAKE UP!! ITS NOT TOO LATE!!!''
@EnarPilrith1 ...once again you are wrong. The Coalition does care about me and all the people that want to make a go in life. They realise that businesses employ people that want to work for a living. So what's the best way to keep unemployment down to a low level..help the people that have got the get up and go to do something with their lives..wonder what you do enj apart from drinking bundy and sitting in front of your screen trying to thing of stuff to insult people..it's not too late!
@loutondacoast you can't even speak properly, i would hate to think what your business is ... its frightening that there are people like you out there. Once again you have proven to me that you have no idea politically. They don't care about you my friend, you are a pawn i'm afraid, a number, myself included. If you believe that these politicians care for you, you need serious help. For they are the ones who are going to be looked after when they retire, all the lurks and perks etc... wake up!!
Give up son, you're a loser clearly, a deadbeat who couldn't run a business with your eyes open! Are you going to cry boy? Would you like a tissue little boy!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I know supporting a party who doesn't give a flying crap about you, i know...
@EnarPilrith1 ..and its astonishing the guy became PM in the first place ... truly laughable to this day.
1996..John Howard and the Coalition wiped Paul(funny boy)Keating from the face of Australian politics.
Lil enjie was just a little school girl and didn't even notice what had happened.
John Howard remained Prime Minister for the next 11yrs...voted in by the Australian public...laugh laugh laugh it was so funny..I can remember it well..everone laughing there heads off..Howard what again !!
@EnarPilrith1..."Keating still beat you losers 13 years to 11"...er?...how do you work that out little school girl?
The only loser apart from you and lunaticeco,is the Labor party.....and that stupid stupid excuse for a woman.
13 to 11 typical labor mathematics...wrong!.."a deadbeat who couldn't run a business with your eyes closed!" Yeah that makes real sense....NOT !!! @lilenjie.
@loser, i'm still laughing Coward/Coconut LOST HIS OWN SEAT!! What a LOSER OF A PM HE WAS!! How embarrassing .... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
@EnarPilrith1 ....what happened to M.P. that took the seat from Howard....don't know..well I'll tell you enjie..she was wiped from the face of politics after about 3mins in the job and now the seat is safely back in the hands of the Liberal govn. where it belongs..... John Alexander. Yes I suppose you would say Howard was a loser of a pm. Crickey !!! he only lasted 11yrs...disgraceful.
@EnarPilrith1..you forget about all the other taxes that were abolished when the gst was introduced, making everything much more simple and not that much more expensive..and also you seem to forget that the Honorable Prime Minister John Howard gave the Australian people the choice to vote for the Coalitions policies or the Labor partys' policies before the election. He didn't lie and try to hide the fact that there would be a GST. He was upfront and took the gamble..Liberals+GST were elected !!
@EnarPilrith1..you forget about all the other taxes that were abolished when the gst was introduced, making everything much more simple and not that much more expensive..and also you seem to forget that the Honerable Prime Minister John Howard gave the Australian people the choice to vote for the Coalitions policies or the Labor partys' policies before the election. He didn't lie and try to hide the fact that there would be a GST. He was upfront and took the gamble..Liberals+GST were elected !!
@loutondacoast The honorable Johnny Coward lost his seat, remember, because of all the deceit and lies the worthless guy spun and did to this fine country we call Australia, and its astonishing the guy became PM in the first place ... truly laughable to this day, but justice was served in 2007. But the GST is still the HIGHEST TAX EVER!! In Australian history, so give up louty before you cop more punishment from fellow youtubers.
ajrnager ....thanks for showing us the light!!! I take back all the comments I ever made about Hawke, Keating, Gillard(the worst PM since Keating) and the blundering stuff-ups the labor party has made recently. I didn't realise all those things I read in the paper and watched on TV were just down right blatant lies ...mmmmm. The hide of those journalists and reporters. Great!!! arjnager that means there won't be any CARBON TAX...it was all just a GREAT BIG LIE !!

High interest rates Keating was the king at interest rate. 13yrs of Howard built this country
MightyJosh1985 4 days ago
@MightyJosh1985 Actually Keating put a stop to high interest rates of the 70 and 80s by ending centralised wage fixing and introducing the incomes accord. Therefore ending wage breakouts and inflation. Keating was a champion of the free market. People often forget that interest rates were once capped at 14% during the 70s although the real figure would have been 22%. Since 1991 when keating was still PM interest rates have fallen and inflation has been dead for over 20 years.
dlan1500 1 day ago
@MightyJosh1985 Also Keating was awarded the worlds best treasurer by euro money magazine in the 80s for his economic reforms to open up the Australian economy. Thank you that someone had the bloody guts to reform our economy. Look at the opportunities we all have because of a free market. Howard came in and only made 1 good reform in 11 years [GST] and at the same time soaked up the mining royalties and pissed it all out in middle class welfare.

Pity all Keating had going for him was words.

Keating was a good PM who passed important reforms but all these Laborite commenters need to come to terms with the fact that he and Hawke left the country with an insane amount of debt that Howard paid off
92spectrum 1 week ago

Ah how Keating would cringe seeing himself carry on like that now.
ez7777777 3 weeks ago 2
@ez7777777 ....ah one more thing you forgot 7x7. John Howard has just recently been awarded with an Honour of Merit by the Queen. A very elite club and one of the very few Australians ever to receive one. That's something else funny boy keating would be absolutely cringing over.

@loutondacoast Howard was a monarchist & pushed back the Aust republic debate - thats the real reason howard got a merit off the english queen.
imlay1992 3 weeks ago
@ez7777777 For howard to have that much cash in the bank means that we were over taxed, or infrastructure was left dead. In howards case, an unhealthy mix of both.
imlay1992 3 weeks ago
@imlay1992 Foresight was Howards thing, The states were never richer and we had funds to prepare for the inevitable European recession, until Ruddy bought everyone a plasma tv with it.
ez7777777 2 weeks ago
@ez7777777 The states were never richer because of the GST, and the taxes he promised to remove - most of which we're still paying to this day..
The govt helping to pay back private debt is far more important than sitting on a bag of cash while the rest of the economy dies.
imlay1992 2 weeks ago
Old Keating can eat his words now. Howard, Most popular PM, Most economically productive PM, Fastest writedown of debt in history, Highest acceptance of tertiary education in Aus history, Lowest jobless figures in 30 years, Highest exports in history, highest non-union wages in history, Oversaw the biggest tax reform in history and not afraid to take a risk to help the people, even if it cost him his own seat.
ez7777777 3 weeks ago
@ez7777777 Hawke was the most popular PM (but i think pollwise Rudd briefly overtook even Hawkes record)
Howard didnt really change anything - and on the scale of things, the GST is not that great a reform.
The rest of what you have said is speculative bullshit.
imlay1992 3 weeks ago
@imlay1992 Percentage Pollwise Whitlam was the most popular PM before his election and Howard was the most popular PM elected at an election requiring compulsory voting. 2004 was the election i believe (Both Houses). Hawke was the most popular PM amongst working class Australians ($25,000 and under) in '83.
Also, undignified swearing in a post, makes me realise you Probably have a very low IQ and dont have the ability to research your answers correctly before you post them.

@ez7777777 all due to the reforms set by keating and hawke in the 1st place, john howard was the biggest freeloading PM ever, if you really think all that happened because little johnny made it happen you are absolutely kidding yourself. Keating, the man that gave us " the recession we had to have ". He will only be remembered for his poisonous invective and as a mediocre PM. Howard presided over a decade of prosperity. What did Keating give us ? the worst recession since the great depression. The only thing bigger than his ego is his mouth !
2004DAZZA 3 months ago
@2004DAZZA ur a bloody moron, howard presided over a decade of prosperity because of paul keating and bob hawke, nothing to do with what he did which was stuff all. If you understood the meaning behind the phrase "the recession we had to have" than you wouldnt be dribbling crap, Keating invested in the future.
raff23 1 month ago
@raff23 I undrestand the phrase very well you CRETIN ! Even Bob Hawke thought it was stupid. In a recent interview Hawke stated " When i heard him make the remark i knew it would be an Albatross around his neck for the rest of his political life ". Many Australians committed suicide during this recession. The only reason Keating won the election was because he was up against a political lightweight in Hewson. Also the Libs payed off Labors massive debt you ignorant fool, So fuck off !
2004DAZZA 1 month ago
@2004DAZZA Paid off the debt, using Keating's 50 economic reforms and the mining boom. You expect me to believe gst and work choices, one of which obliterated from policy because it was so crooked, the only two economical reforms they made drew the economy into surplus? Do you even understand why recession happens? If you took a laxative perhaps I could bury you in a matchbox.
DMAN123223 1 month ago
@DMAN123223 Here's just one example of Howards reforms ' SIMPLE SIMON ' . When he took over we had some of the most unproductive Ports in the Western World. He smashed the stranglehold of the corrupt waterfront unions resulting in massive increases in productivity. I don't expect you to give the him credit for anything because it's clear your a Labor lackey. If a hungry Cannibal cut open your skull and took out your brain he wouldn't find enough to spread on a water cracker ! Try again genius
2004DAZZA 1 month ago
@2004DAZZA Smashing unions? Sounds like work choices, but I guess that's what they're best at, ruining the rights and democracy of the workers. Really, that fits into the same umbrella as work choices so it's still two policies. The best thing that they ever did was do nothing, because that took Paul Keating's policy to work, creating the so called Liberal surplus. Oh ouch, alliteration is my one weakness.
DMAN123223 1 month ago
@DMAN123223 What a feeble reply, so union corruption is ok, my God your an idiot. Also when it came to an election Howard buried him. Here's some advice, stop living in the past. This is 2011 and your beloved Labor is on the nose like never before. Nearly 70% of Australians think you suck. Your going to get your ass kicked at the next election just like NSW Labor. But don't despair, you can always come on youtube and toss off to all the Keating videos you like. Now go & be boring elsewhere !
2004DAZZA 1 month ago
@2004DAZZA So you think work choices was a fine policy? After all it got rid of union corruption right? And what exactly prompted you to come to the present? Out of examples of economic reform? Truth is, yeah I hate the current Labor party, next election Liberal will likely get my vote. But Paul Keating's reform of the floating dollar, the privatisation of Gov run busyness and deregulation policy amongst others brought our economy into the first world. Howard buried Keating, using his policy.
DMAN123223 1 month ago
@DMAN123223 The base of your entire argument has been Howard didn't make any significant reforms. That assertion is " BULLSHIT " and highlights your ignorance. If Keating was so great why did he only last one term as PM? Like most Labor hacks you're fixated with work choices. Is Fair Work Australia looking after workers rights? Ask the Qantas workers or Victorian nurses what they think of them. Finally, if you think Keatings remark " this is the recession we had to have " was ok your bonkers !
2004DAZZA 1 month ago
@2004DAZZA GST/work choices are significant reform, but are the only two. That's the basis. Still waiting for an example of what was so good that John did. Keating lasted one term due to the temporary set backs his policies put, the huge eco boom under him created the bust, yet were the building blocks for the lib's surplus. It's evident from the lack of policy change. The long term benefits outweigh the downside and that's why "this is a recession we had to have." Fair work is the lesser evil.
DMAN123223 1 month ago
@DMAN123223. Iv'e already highlighted waterfront reform which brought about huge economic and productivity benefits. The GST resulted in the abolition of sales tax and provided a cash bonanza for the states to spend on health, education & infrastructure. They abolished Labors job destroying unfair dismissal laws so employers could sack unreliable, unproductive staff without the threat of being sued. The Libs created a surplus because they don't spend money like a " drunken sailor " as Labor do !
2004DAZZA 1 month ago
@2004DAZZA Right so just GST and Work practice law (ie work choices). I don't think that work practice law can compare to the floating dollar let alone the other 49 reforms. The first federal surplus was under Keating as treasurer, Howard had huge inflation and high unemployment. It wasn't 'til Peter snapped his fingers when he realised he didn't need to change much after Keating. The gov is spending like a drunken sailor, but not Keating. "threat of being sued" uh oh! It might be a fair trial!
DMAN123223 1 month ago
@DMAN123223 Get a grip mate ! The recession we had to have. Tell that to the people who lost their homes and businesses. Tell that to the people who lost their jobs or had family members commit suicide because of the recession we had to have. The remark has been condemned by people on both sides of politics including Bob Hawke. And your continued defence of it only proves what a '' ROLLED GOLD DICKHEAD '' you really are !
2004DAZZA 1 month ago
@2004DAZZA There's an extensive article on The Age about why it needed to be done. As Paul Kelly said "It was perhaps the most stupid remark of his career and it nearly cost him the prime ministership. However, it is largely true, the boom begat the recession." But it simply comes to what is the point of the present if there's nothing to the future? Of course, I'd doubt you would know the meaning of those words too. Bob Hawke understood why people wouldn't want to hear it, but why it was true.

@neilious01 What faith do you gain from Paul Keating who delivered Australias' worst economy to that era?
jpilot101 1 month ago
@jpilot101 You're joking right? Keating fundamentally built the modern Australian economy and the reforms from his leadership are the reason why we're a stable and rich country today. Fundamentally there was turbulence (e.g., rise in unemployment for a short period) because that's what happens when you restructure an economy - look at Thatcher's restructuring of Britain for a similar example - when you restructure an economy it has to go through an adaption period.
brentoneccles 1 month ago
From 1991-1996 the GDP rose miserably from $329b to $403b under a Keating government. When Howard was voted in he started cleaning up the Keating mess by putting in hard measures such as the GST with the GDP remaining low until 2002. This is the adaption period and clearly had nothing to do with Keating. From then the GDP rose from $380b to $856b. This was a result of economic reform to encourage entrepreneurs, trading with profitable nations and cutting unnecessary expenses from the budget.
jpilot101 1 month ago
@jpilot101 To make those statements you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Keating is the principal architect of the modern Australian economy, and no amount of right-wing denial will change that. We have had continuous low inflation and high-growth since Keating's reforms ~20 years ago. If you honestly think the GST built the Australian economy, then, you really do only deserve to be ignored my friend. The GST does not even compare with Keating's hard work.
brentoneccles 1 month ago
@brentoneccles I'm somewhat in a state of shock that left-wing backers actually believe Keating was an asset to Labour and that you actually take credit for the successful Howard policies. Talk all you like but it's the Australian people who voted Keating out for his economic mismanagement and they also know that if they want prosperity then it is the Coalition they need to vote for. BTW since 2008 the GDP has fallen. There is a haunting pattern for the ALP economists.
jpilot101 1 month ago
@jpilot101 Everything you just said in that comment is demonstrably dumb and wrong. If you don't understand that Keating virtually created the modern Australian economy, and he alone, then you don't understand Australian history - this has nothing to do with politics or bias it's just simple history. And on GDP falling since 2008, that's not quite true. Revenues have fallen, and so forth, because of, gosh, that big economic crisis the world had. Apparently you've been under a rock.
brentoneccles 1 month ago
I invited you to present an argument(using legitimate examples) for what Keating did that makes you so comfortable to credit him with Howards' economic work. However you failed to do so and have now scooped to the bottom of the barrel by starting with personal attacks. This is likely because there is nothing beneficial Keating did. I leave you now having consolidated my stance that this is a debate that you can't win and that the next election will haunt left wing members for another long spell.
jpilot101 1 month ago
@jpilot101 LOL. Howard did nothing mate. I can go on endlessly about Keating's work (none of which Howard dared undo, by the way) and some important examples: ending centralised wage fixing, floating the dollar, superannuation, APEC and bringing in a low-inflation high growth period which is still going to this day. All done by Keating not Howard.
brentoneccles 1 month ago
Howard introduced GST (Keating initially had the idea in mind, but droped it), stopped boats from coming and then he introduced work choices which indeed was a political suicide.
Jabitout 1 month ago
@Jabitout He didn't stop a single boat from coming, that was just spin. Work-choices was a nightmare that resulted in my girlfriend (now wife) getting sacked from her waitress job after her boss sexually propositioned her, and might have seen me go to jail after I punched him. John Howard was, I'm happy to say, by far the worst PM this country has ever seen, a horrible little man of no discernible talent for anything good.
mlawren7 1 month ago
@jpilot101 Now if you please, explain what Howard did that supposedly brought about these things when Keating had already done the hard yards? What specific policies did Howard pursue that built the Australian economy? Even Costello said the man had little grip of good economic policy. That's why he left Keating's reforms in place. He at least had the sense to know what good work was when someone else had done it for him.
brentoneccles 1 month ago
@jpilot101 And please stop pretending that respect for Hawke and Keating is a left-wing thing. Even the most conservative media outlets in Australia, a marked example being The Australian, credit Hawke and especially Keating with being the principal architect of the modern Australian economy. So please, keep coming out with proof that you don't understand what has made this nation great.
brentoneccles 1 month ago
@jpilot101 All I have to say re: your comments on post-2008 Australia is pretty simple. On all wealth indicators things have gotten better year by year, despite a major global crisis. Australia, in-fact, since Howard was turfed out of office and we have a decent Government back has risen in rankings on virtually all economic indicators both domestically and internationally.
brentoneccles 1 month ago
@jpilot101 Seriously almost everything the Howard Government took credit for was because of Keating's work. I've got no bones about saying that because it's absolutely true. I can point to many, many reforms from Keating and Hawke that are directly responsible for bringing Oz from developing country to developed country. You can't do that with Howard's 10 years without being dishonest or giving him credit for other people's work.
brentoneccles 1 month ago
Thus far you've given me nothing other than dismay over the facts that Labour faithful hate to hear. Paul Keating did make attempts to bring the economy back to something competitive however the cost of living and GDP showed his efforts were in vain. It was GST that stabilized the economy and delivered a budgets surplus which in turn flowed onto the Australian people. Come back with some evidence and I'm open for debate but until then I have no interest in continuing a debate you can't win.

When he moves his hands, it's to make a point.
When Gillard moves her hands (in surprising similar gestures) it's just something she's practised in the mirror.

Collsism 4 months ago
@Collsism ..absolute rot ! It's Labor not Labour and he lasted 4yrs not 11yrs. Try looking up what Howard actually did in HIS 11yrs. He was the second longest serving P.M. and he did some wonderful things for the this country...."barely changed a thing" ...you're a joke!
loutondacoast 4 months ago
@loutondacoast Yes, I mixed up facts in my post. Truth is Keating was only PM for 4 years yet did more than Howard managed in 11. Howard did things but not much that made Australia better. He sold off government assets, introduced a big new tax & enjoyed good economic times. Sarcastically :"Wow. How did they end up with a surplus?" Howard certainly wasn't forward thinking. What did Howard/Costello do with the surplus to move Australia forward?

@Collsism ..." What did Howard/Costello do with the surplus to move Australia forward?"
They didn't get a chance to do anything because the labor govn. came into power.
My question to you....what did labor do with all our hard earned dough?
loutondacoast 4 months ago
@loutondacoast Destruction of health system. Destruction of education system. Fake dead tree planting tax scams. Calling for all Australians to fear and hate Muslims. Yeah all great stuff no doubt.
mryellow123 4 months ago
At least i have been up front, i hate both political parties so cut the crap louty! You honestly believe you get a fair go under neocons... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Let's see, workchoices cutting wages and conditions making you sign on for less money,(threatening the worker),work for the dole, covering up true unemployment figures (threatening the people). Cutting spending on infrastructure and hospital's (killing people). They introduced the highest tax... well, ever!! Oh, and they warmonger.

EnarPilrith1 4 months ago
@EnarPilrith1 ...once again you are wrong. The Coalition does care about me and all the people that want to make a go in life. They realise that businesses employ people that want to work for a living. So what's the best way to keep unemployment down to a low level..help the people that have got the get up and go to do something with their lives..wonder what you do enj apart from drinking bundy and sitting in front of your screen trying to thing of stuff to insult people..it's not too late!
loutondacoast 4 months ago
@loutondacoast you can't even speak properly, i would hate to think what your business is ... its frightening that there are people like you out there. Once again you have proven to me that you have no idea politically. They don't care about you my friend, you are a pawn i'm afraid, a number, myself included. If you believe that these politicians care for you, you need serious help. For they are the ones who are going to be looked after when they retire, all the lurks and perks etc... wake up!!

But the GST is still the HIGHEST TAX EVER!! In Australian history, so give up louty before you cop more punishment from fellow youtubers.
