The majority of seals are shot which has been proven to be a humane method as is the hakapik. Sealing removes 3-5% of the overall population. Humans are a predatory species, one of only a few predators of seals. Without our hunting of them the seals will overpopulate. Since the 70s the seal herd has grown to 8-10million, the highest on record - that is an example of sustainable harvesting.

@Nutto666 For reliable proof just look a number of other species (ourselves included) who are too over populated for their habitats to sustain them. Seals consume more fish than all the fisheries across Canada take from the water. With a growing herd of seals there just won't be enough fish to sustain them creating starvation which will then lead to disease because of weakened immune systems. Filming is allowed during the hunt. Read the Marine Mammal Regulations on the DFO website.
@Ersabette what im asking for is scientific evidence that the environment cannot sustain the current seal population. it is to my knowledge that nature has its own way of regulating wildlife populations. when resources become scarce, reproduction slows down, fewer pups are born and fewer survive. disease while unpleasant at least distinguishes weak from strong. human initiated culls are less discriminating, and whats happening already is nothing short of a cull.
@Nutto666 There is no scientific evidence that I'm aware of yet. Natures way of dealing with overpopulation is not as merciful as a hakapik or a bullet. Signs of their overpopulation are already being seen from the early pupping off Labrador in Dec of this year and 100s of dead seals washed ashore in Lab as well. This only after 2 years of decreased catches during the hunt. Disease can wipe out the whole herd, not just separate the weak from the strong, if there is no fish none can survive.

@Ersabette moreso western medicine has not prolonged our lives or caused our population to skyrocket. Medicine has done more harm that it has good but that is a topic for another day. People stopped planning parenthood and took more chances with sex ex: a lot more teen sex and pregnancy. My highschool alone had a daycare center in its front yard. People lost their values and traditions. Now with shows like '19 kids and counting' it's desirable to have ridiculously large families.

The only thing western medicine is good for is trauma and emergencies. It does not help disease, it creates it. Chemo is what kills cancer patients, not cancer. @Nutto666 A fisherman's view of seals is not telling to how they treat them. Sealers are professionals and the majority do not wish to cause any unnecessary pain or suffering. Of course there are some who do not always kill properly but you can not paint all sealers with same brush. Observers are not the only ones out there. DFO also monitors the hunt and vets also go out with the sealers themselves.
@Ersabette i sure hope so. pardon me for not having much faith in humanity. i read an article about inuit narwhal hunters where they admitted that they fired less, and took more accurate shots when an observer was present. of course i cant generalize but you have to admit that the publicity given to the hunt has brought about some positive changes eg. stricter regulations like the eye reflex test etc that wouldnt be here if it weren't for public pressure
@Nutto666 It may have brought some positive changes but I would still say ARA's have done more harm than good. They wanted more monitoring which now there is but complain of the cost. They claim most of the seal is wasted and at the same time do their best to destroy the markets that would better utilize the seal. They are already in China trying to counteract our gov'ts efforts of creating markets in that country. Public pressure isn't always in the right direction or for the right reasons.
@Ersabette if there's no evidence then what you're saying is purely hypothetical. live 3 months and die to a bullet, or live 1 year and die from distemper? if a seal dies of natural causes there is no one to blame, and the creature would have at least had a chance to live. the seal killed by the hunter has none. just a short, sharp end.

On the other hand many of the reports released by the anti-sealing groups like IFAW's March 2001 report are not peer reviewed and fail internationally in the veterinary field.

@Melissa4U1987 Wrong, there are regulations that need to be met before you can call yourself a captain. Anyone can own a ship but they need to be licensed to use it. For tacking the issue every day you didn't hear what pelt prices were this year - approx $20. A boat can easily land 400 seals a day, that's $8000. Veterinary is a science which means those that practice veterinary medicine are scientists, google it. You don't have to create medications to be a scientist.

What a boat makes from sealing is split up amongst the crew into shares, a crew member could make 10% of their landings. As I said, that could amount up to 25% of their income.

For example, if I look to PETA or HSUS for seal hunt facts, the majority of information i will encounter will go against the hunt. If I look to DFO, I will find information in favor of the hunt. The rest of the video went well. And I agree that everyone should get educated. But you must also take into account that although the internet does provide a wealth of information as you said, that still does not guarantee that all the information is true. It's rather easy to stumble upon information that is biased, one-sided, and therefore skews your impression of the whole picture.
The only way you can attack his credibility is by attacking the claims themselves. Just because he might have lied about his age, and just because he fails to disclose information about where he's located, doesn't automatically mean he lies or hides everything. You also shouldn't be totally trustworthy of people who seem to always tell the truth.. it just doesn't prove anything.
A person's credibility has to do with their trustworthiness and reliability. When someone chooses to lie about the little things as well as lie about others it tarnishes their over-all credibility. The failure to disclose personal information - depending whether it is important to the circumstance - isn't an issue.
Whether or not it attacks his credibility as a person, it is ino use attacking the person he is rather than the "lies" themselves. Arriving to the conclusion that "if he lies about some things, he might lie about other things" is a pure assumption--and assumptions prove nothing. Why? Because you ignore the possibility that he could be lying about everything when it comes to his own self, but be telling the entire truth (or intend to) when it comes to the seal hunt.
Did I not argue the lies? Did I not argue his claims about seal meat inspections for botulism and trichinosis? I have never seen the benefits of being dishonest in any way. When someone does lie it makes me question everything they say which is why it is important to research before accepting such claims.
But I understand where you are coming from, because it's almost in our own human nature to make assumptions all the time. But these assumptions still ..prove nothing. For example, perhaps you might assume that since a family feeds their turkey everyday, that they turkey will always be fed--everyday. But come Thanksgiving..the turkey is eaten. Same way you might assume XB70Playboy..because he lies about himself, he lies about other things too. But could it be that he only lies about himself?

You're giving yourself too much credit. Are you not aware of the recession that is currently happening? Sealing removes 3-5% of the overall population. Humans are a predatory species, one of only a few predators of seals. Without our hunting of them the seals will overpopulate. Since the 70s the seal herd has grown to 8-10million, the highest on record - that is an example of sustainable harvesting.

Seals consume more fish than all the fisheries across Canada take from the water. With a growing herd of seals there just won't be enough fish to sustain them creating starvation which will then lead to disease because of weakened immune systems. Filming is allowed during the hunt. Read the Marine Mammal Regulations on the DFO website.

@Nutto666 There is no scientific evidence that I'm aware of yet. Natures way of dealing with overpopulation is not as merciful as a hakapik or a bullet. Signs of their overpopulation are already being seen from the early pupping off Labrador in Dec of this year and 100s of dead seals washed ashore in Lab as well. This only after 2 years of decreased catches during the hunt. Disease can wipe out the whole herd, not just separate the weak from the strong, if there is no fish none can survive.

@Nutto666 A fisherman's view of seals is not telling to how they treat them. Sealers are professionals and the majority do not wish to cause any unnecessary pain or suffering. Of course there are some who do not always kill properly but you can not paint all sealers with same brush. Observers are not the only ones out there. DFO also monitors the hunt and vets also go out with the sealers themselves.

They claim most of the seal is wasted and at the same time do their best to destroy the markets that would better utilize the seal. @Melissa4U1987 Wrong, there are regulations that need to be met before you can call yourself a captain. Anyone can own a ship but they need to be licensed to use it. For tacking the issue every day you didn't hear what pelt prices were this year - approx $20. A boat can easily land 400 seals a day, that's $8000. Veterinary is a science which means those that practice veterinary medicine are scientists, google it. You don't have to create medications to be a scientist.

What a boat makes from sealing is split up amongst the crew into shares, a crew member could make 10% of their landings. As I said, that could amount up to 25% of their income.

I used to do that when I was like 11 or 12---in chatrooms, just change a letter or two from someone's nickname and get the other person in trouble. It was done to me, too. But a man (and I used the term loosely) in his 40's who does that? We're talking dire need of treatment here. He hasn't been bothering me at all. What are all his new names? He knows that if he bothers me I'll make one call and he'll be suspended again.

I think he acts that way because his primary target are kids, who are much more easily manipulated with pictures of fluffy white seals and oversimplified statements.
For example, he had spent a considerable amount of time trying to claim that would should dumb the subject down and use the term "baby seal" instead of "whitecoat" and "beater", just so he could imply that whitecoats are still hunted.
He actually slipped up once and claimed seals from 2 weeks to 3.5 months were "whitecoats".

For example, if I look to PETA or HSUS for seal hunt facts, the majority of information i will encounter will go against the hunt. If I look to DFO, I will find information in favor of the hunt. The only way you can attack his credibility is by attacking the claims themselves. Just because he might have lied about his age, and just because he fails to disclose information about where he's located, doesn't automatically mean he lies or hides everything. You also shouldn't be totally trustworthy of people who seem to always tell the truth.. it just doesn't prove anything.

Whether or not it attacks his credibility as a person, it is ino use attacking the person he is rather than the "lies" themselves. Arriving to the conclusion that "if he lies about some things, he might lie about other things" is a pure assumption--and assumptions prove nothing. Why? Because you ignore the possibility that he could be lying about everything when it comes to his own self, but be telling the entire truth (or intend to) when it comes to the seal hunt.

And funny how he says in youtube that he has been flying commercially for 4 years, but I googled his name and saw that me made a comment last November in another site saying that he 'would soon be a commercial pilot'. Great video. Mr.XB70Playboy has been lying for a long time. He's made videos about me, sent me a hundred vile personal messages, and he has dozens of accounts that he 'thumbs down' every one of my comments with. He says he flies planes, but he replies to you within minutes of writing a comment. His picture in his profile is in a small bush plane...not a commercial jet. You know the man is lying when his fingers are typing. Glad you are confronting this lying individual!

alright i'm sorry but i think i am missing thie point here... you start out saying people misunderstand the seal hunt... and then you say nothing about it? i'm not calling you out on anything i have just read the comments and i dont see anything that justifies a quarter of a million seals being beat to death by some crazy ass canadian eh?

foozle, what was I doing when I spoke of seal meat, was that not talking about sealing? I have two words in justification for the seal hunt - 'population control' which will clearly be demonstrated when a cull replaces the hunt.

The HSUS Canadian seafood boycott continues to gain ground -- more than 5,000 businesses and more than 600,000 individuals have pledged not to buy Canadian seafood until the seal hunt ends for good. The fishing industry is losing money, and prices for seal skins have crashed to $15 (CAD) -- an 86 percent drop from 2006. Most fishermen aren't bothering to leave home to join the hunt, and tens of thousands of seals have been spared.

You're giving yourself too much credit. Are you not aware of the recession that is currently happening? Many people in unrelated industries, auto for example, have either lost their jobs completely or have been laid off due to the global economic crisis. Vehicles and seafood are considered luxury items during times like these because many just can't afford them. This year many seals have been spared but the seals will still be killed whether a industry exists or not.

Cagrin10 - I have watched the video but I'm sorry to say my perspective hasn't changed. I have not or will not support animal rights - animal welfare yes, but not animal rights. I have also never doubted that animals have spirits. I see the spirits in my dogs every day.

Though i agree with limited hunting, mass killing seals i have a problem with. I recall hearing stories of ancient hunters (who still had telepathy abilities in those days) going to the edge of the jungle and calling out to the animals, who would answer and come to be killed by the hunter(this was in ancient Africa). They had mutual respect, we often don't.
