Lord Oaksey was out of luck again here on Proud Tarquin. If I remember rightly they finished first and were disqualified after a tussle with The Dikler at the finish of the Whitbread Gold Cup, either this year or the previous year
for certain that will never happen again,Proud Tarquin a brave race but tired two fences out, good ride by Brian fletcher taking rummy round the inside to save distance
the thing with red rum was that he was born to be a sprinter....... and so to have that speed, stamina and jumping ability made it so unfair to all other horses....he truly was a freaky horse and one that should always be remembered as the greatest national horse of all time and possibly the greatest steeple chaser of all time.
No modern day chaser will ever do what Red Rum did and almost bar Esban would have compled as a double double.. Many a last few season chaser has tried to follow but never got near and never will do.
Not see the likes of Dessert Orchid, Red Rum, Secritariat , Najinsky, Shergar, Kato Star and Denman , Man O War again. They were the best and a joy to see.
What a horse Red Rum was. In those days the top weight would be carrying anything up to 12 stone 7 pounds (I think that was his weight that day). The achievement is even more remarkable seeing that the fences were stiffer and bigger then and it was only 3 weeks after his victory at Aintree under 12 stone when he beat dual Gold Cup winner L'Escargot by almost a distance.
Only time I ever backed Red Rum was in this race.Fine judge I am :0( Brilliant ride by John Oaksey who in any other year would have been the hero of the day.
His narrow defeat the year before to the grey Esban was equal to this performance if not better after the epic duel at Aintree. Both performances show just how tough he really was no horse has got anywhere near performances like those since.
@bluemanc43 ....i guess the handicapper was on his back after winning 2 nationals.....was this the case in the Esban race.....was he penalised for his 1973 national win by the handicapper.....or did he escape a penalty..........?
My grandma actually met Red Rum as he used to swim in the sea off Southport before a big race :]

Fantastic footage! It's great to hear the names of horses I'm only really familiar with through watching recordings of old Grand Nationals.

Ayr racecourse has changed a bit since 1974!

the water jump's gone for starters! But the houses in the background don't seem to have changed at all...
fabulous performance by Red Rum, btw, carrying top weight. Possibly his best (and most forgotten) achievement.

I remember Esban. He was a half brother to Vulgan Town (out of Banitown). Do you have a recording of that race?
