This is actually a tough comparison for me, because this 70s version still isn't peak Who. Moon was overweight and not playing well at this time, and the band was actually talking about kicking him out if he didn't get his act together. Now, a Who performance from 1968-1970 would be unbeatable. I will say this ... the current lineup, even without Entwistle, is better than the 1979-85 lineup with Kenny Jones at drums.

You're perhaps right, but what i know they did many video retakes to make it fit, so i doubt the drum sound is applied after.

It might just be that the 05 version is a better quality recording, but I think I like the 05 version better... it has a cleaner sound to it, more like the studio version. I know that a "cymbal clatter" background is a trademark of The Who, but in the 70s version, it just sounds kinda sloppy... no offence to Moon (Rock in Peace!); he is one of my fav all time drummers! Still, the fact that 05 Who can even compare with 70s Who is a tribute to the energy and skill these guys still have. Rock on!

remember, the who is the best band ever. they are almost godly:

Pete is the most well rounded guitarist ever (ie solo's of Quad and obscure chords of Tommy)

John is the greatest(fastest) bassist ever. the eye of the storm where all the power was omitted

Kieth is the BEST drummer ever. he could make a frank sinatra song sound good with the wall of sound he put out

Rogers voice grabs your ear and screams into it, with an infinite range of sound and his commanding stage presence

well, not quite comparable. bonham was all about percision. keith moon went for that anything goes style (also called sloppy). SO moon would not work with zepp and bonham would not work with the who because of the general sound produced by each band. thats the way i see it anyway....but yes, they are both amazing drummers

When an early version of the band was being discussed that would have had himself, John Entwistle on bass, Jimmy Page on guitar, and an undecided vocalist, he stated the potential super group would "go down like a lead balloon." He joined Zeppelin on stage and drummed along with John Bonham for the encores in a show on 23 June 1977 at the L.A. Forum (recorded on various Led Zeppelin bootlegs).

You can't compare the two, to be honest.

The Who are one of the greatest bands to have lived, if not THE best.

However in the 70's the Who had Keith and John, in 2005 they don't. Thats the whole rhythm section lost practicaly. This isn't even the great Zak Starskey that is drumming for them here, as you may know Keith Moon gave him lessons!

There is no comparison. 70's rule. However the Who still fuckin rule! No matter what anybody says, Pete will always be my idol!

They were 30 years younger; more energy in Townsend's playing and a lot more power in Daltrey's voice.

No Moon, no Entwistle in the 05 version. Each a master of his instrument, and together the best rhythm section the world has ever seen, or ever will see.

1999 for chest pains in london.That was his warning but the drug is addictive that he just did not care.

John would be still alive today if it was not for white powder proving again IT will catch up to eventually.He was still young at 53yrs old.

You also have to remember that 1. they were younger 2. Ox and Loon were still alive 3. and when they filmed that mini set for "The Kids are Alright" they were beyond pissed off because of production snafus. They still sound pretty bomb in '05. Not bad for a couple of old geesers.
