70's was the golden age of rock n roll and actually a good time for music in general, so much better than the crap like jonas bros and hannah montana that we have today!!!!!! when songs like won't get fooled again and baba o' riley happened, those were the days of good music and good rock n roll!!!!!!
i will say that the concert for New York was probably the best versions of those songs ever recorded. itd be hard to find a better verison of wont get fooled, who are you, baba, and behind blue eyes
This is actually a tough comparison for me, because this 70s version still isn't peak Who. Moon was overweight and not playing well at this time, and the band was actually talking about kicking him out if he didn't get his act together. Now, a Who performance from 1968-1970 would be unbeatable. I will say this ... the current lineup, even without Entwistle, is better than the 1979-85 lineup with Kenny Jones at drums.
It might just be that the 05 version is a better quality recording, but I think I like the 05 version better... it has a cleaner sound to it, more like the studio version. I know that a "cymbal clatter" background is a trademark of The Who, but in the 70s version, it just sounds kinda sloppy... no offence to Moon (Rock in Peace!); he is one of my fav all time drummers! Still, the fact that 05 Who can even compare with 70s Who is a tribute to the energy and skill these guys still have. Rock on!
well, not quite comparable. bonham was all about percision. keith moon went for that anything goes style (also called sloppy). SO moon would not work with zepp and bonham would not work with the who because of the general sound produced by each band. thats the way i see it anyway....but yes, they are both amazing drummers
Interesting fact: Moon is said to have named Led Zeppelin. When an early version of the band was being discussed that would have had himself, John Entwistle on bass, Jimmy Page on guitar, and an undecided vocalist, he stated the potential super group would "go down like a lead balloon." He joined Zeppelin on stage and drummed along with John Bonham for the encores in a show on 23 June 1977 at the L.A. Forum (recorded on various Led Zeppelin bootlegs).
The Who are one of the greatest bands to have lived, if not THE best.
However in the 70's the Who had Keith and John, in 2005 they don't. Thats the whole rhythm section lost practicaly. This isn't even the great Zak Starskey that is drumming for them here, as you may know Keith Moon gave him lessons!
There is no comparison. 70's rule. However the Who still fuckin rule! No matter what anybody says, Pete will always be my idol!
They were 30 years younger; more energy in Townsend's playing and a lot more power in Daltrey's voice.
No Moon, no Entwistle in the 05 version. Each a master of his instrument, and together the best rhythm section the world has ever seen, or ever will see.
well there is a 25 year difference from the two concerts so of course they wouldve sounded better 25 years ago.however neither of them can be outbeaten live
OH please 70s video blowes the 05 away.I saw the who in 74 once you see them live there is no other band
in the 70s that can even keep up with the energy they play with. The WHO IS the Greatest live band ever.I see them play now pete and roger are still pete and roger but without MOON,John Enthwisle There not the WHO......
Oh i agree there still great, but when i seen them in 1974 there were no words.I mean of course that was 30yrs ago and townsend jumping on the stage like a crazy man of course besides roger john, kieth and pete
were loaded on stage Drugs big time.I know alot of details about the who but i'm not going to wright a book here.3yrs ago i went to london for the WHO convention its awsome they have one once a year.
you are so lucky to have seen them in that year.roger didn't do drugs though ,i used to think he did until i saw numersous interviews by other members saying he smoked cigarrettes in the 60's then quit.
Roger never was hooked on drugs and that why he did not get along to well with moon at the begning. That was frustrating for the rest of the band no one is better than moon when he's on and not loaded on drugs
Moon is the top 3 drummers in the world watch A QUICK ONE From the stones music circus. There is nobody better and his drum kit looks like its for a 10 yr old
Yeah, Roger was so paranoid about his voice that he didn't do drugs and rarely drank. Even considering how it is now, if he had done drugs he might have been a lot worse a lot earlier
Roger got on john for his cocaine habit.Roger proves right in a enclusive interview in london.John entwistle died from a cocaine induced heart attact
which means not a overdose but years of using the drug
everyday and alot i would imagine with his money.Cocaine addict with money to blow is ticking time bomb. continues use of cocaine constrides your ateries so the blood flow to your heart does not get enough oxegen to your brain.
He was 57yrs old because i saw them in 1974 i was 16yrs old. He was 19 yrs older than me to see them is the greatest concert i have ever been to and i have seen the best#2 choice pink floyd and zeppelin, stones suck in concert along with Yes unless your trippen.
70/late 60s who is totally more energetic louder and better. Although, the who presently is still unreal. The loss of moon and the ox affected the band greatly. RIP
You also have to remember that 1. they were younger 2. Ox and Loon were still alive 3. and when they filmed that mini set for "The Kids are Alright" they were beyond pissed off because of production snafus. They still sound pretty bomb in '05. Not bad for a couple of old geesers.
Love it. It must have been difficult editing it to sound right considering that these performances were redcorded thirty years apart from each other. Love the Meet the New Boss.. shift
I just wanna say that The Who were better in the 1970s because Keith and John were still alive. Pete and Roger still rock!
No comparison. They got old before they died--Roger and Pete anyway.
Roger's voice is shot.

There's something wrong with the Cymbal recordning on the 70' one. It's not suppoused to be there.
So that sort of ruins it abit :P
Nevarrus 3 years ago
the drums from the 70's won't get fooled again one isn't that actaul perforamce, moon made so many mistakes that they recorded it after.
Eamuesrtsionn 3 years ago
Well, you don't notice it on the actual good quality video of the 70's one.
I ment there's something disturbing the quality of it.
You're perhaps right, but what i know they did many video retakes to make it fit, so i doubt the drum sound is applied after.

actually the sloppiness is what he was remembered for...
Anticrombie918 3 years ago
remember, the who is the best band ever. they are almost godly:
Pete is the most well rounded guitarist ever (ie solo's of Quad and obscure chords of Tommy)
John is the greatest(fastest) bassist ever. the eye of the storm where all the power was omitted
Kieth is the BEST drummer ever. he could make a frank sinatra song sound good with the wall of sound he put out
Rogers voice grabs your ear and screams into it, with an infinite range of sound and his commanding stage presence
05 is missin 2guys
Anticrombie918 3 years ago 5
I dunno... I would say John Bonham and Keith Moon are about equal.

I know for a fact john was rushed to the hospital in
1999 for chest pains in london. That was his warning but the drug is addictive that he just did not care.
