Ryan is, indeed, one of the funniest characters on the show, more so now than before. This is my personal opinion, but if ANY character gets any hate from me, it's Michael J. Scott. I understand it's just in his character, and I love that, I feel there's a lot of smart thinking behind Michael's character, but he can be really annoying at some times (which is again in his character).
Arguing over Ryan's character? Lemme break it down. Ryan's the cool guy. He's kind of like Jim-cool, being smooth and clever. Except Jim is nice/chill guy cool. Ryan is asshole cool.
All the characters of the Office have had their thing clearly defined from the beginning, except Ryan. First he was just this kind of douchy but relatively normal guy who Michael wanted to have sex with, then he was a coke head, now he's..........crazy? I don't even know.
@TheBackOfTheBoat I think Ryan, despite being absent for a ton of episodes, has the most development. He seems quite normal at first then we he's like way high up there, he's a douche, and then he gets fired and all that. I find it weird that Ryan changes the most rather than the more major characters. If the writers wanted to, they could pull off Ryan being the main character because of all this.
@APURPLESQUID Thing is, the actor playing Ryan IS one of the main writers of the show. I think he develops his character a lot and simultaniously keeps him on the background on purpose.
@Tr1ploid That makes sense. Mindy Kaling, the actress that plays Kelly, is also a writer on the show. As a matter of fact, she wasn't supposed to be on the show initially, but the writers needed another minority on their episode called "Diversity Day." They needed an Indian person to slap Michael for being offensive. Kelly stayed, but she also isn't shown much on the show. She kind of stays in the background, too. It wasn't until last season that she started to get more air time.

It's amazing to think how in the first seasons, he was the shiest guy in the office, but after he came back, he is the complete opposite.
