To say that one of his songs is "just not him" doesn't make any sense to me. He has so many different styles you really can't compare. Ih-Ah is prob my favorite song on the album. He's done nothing short of genius to me.
We should be happy he got back from self-imposed retirement. I was instantly into Addicted but Ki took me a while ... and now it has really grown on me.
Don't Forget, While I am indeed sad that Strapping has been put into the deep freeze, I am actually thankful. Because 1 I respect that Devin feels He is just not being honest with Strapping anymore, I can understand that If you feel something is being forced, why do it. And 2 not only do we get Devins Fantastic Project albums. But from the Ashes of Strapping arose a sinister, foul, sometimes stinky, and always one of the mos fucking awesome act's in metal, ZIMMERS HOLE!!
The song you talked about being disappointed by..."Awake" or "Ih-Ah"? If "Ih-Ah", I must say you clearly forgot which song you were talking about, as I'm fairly certain Anneke doesn't have a single singing part on that song. If "Awake", seriously? Okay, when I first heard the "Walk on home boy" part, I thought "What the fuck was that". But outside of that, the song was amazing. Besides, that song has the most SYLesque vocal section of any of the songs on Addicted ("I want to be set free...")
@jumblejunkiemusic i think the thing about ih-ah is that is not him, it's just not him... i instantly liked but my friend who is a hardcore devin despise it..
im more in love with ki. thats the best he have done except the strapping albums.
the album is just ok. i cant find that secret thread that holds the album compact through an whole album. addicted is to me some songs just randomly spread out. some songs stand out tho. supercrush and resolve.
but no. im pretty dissapointed with addicted. im more of a Ocean machine fan of devin. wich i felt somtimes more with ki then addicted....
Good review, this is one of my favorite Devin Albums across his catalogue. I have to disagree about Ih-Ah!, it's certainly different than the other tracks but it's a fantastic song in itself, simple and sweet. I think it breaks up the heaviness quite nicely, not to mention gets stuck in your head if you listen to it enough times.
maybe a bit too different from the other tracks. Its like shifting the style from the rest of the album. This song could easily be put on another album. But again... im just happy that Devin Townsend does what he does.
i was never a fan, but this album totally blew me awayy!!
the only song i dont like as much is 'universe in a ball,' kinda felt like filler to me, at least for now.
other than that i thought it was awesome and the production value of it puts it over the top, the only thing i wish he did differently is having more guitar solos. good review.
it's sad that this is the CD that just happened to be coming out when I am saving all my pennies. I feel like sometimes Devin's recent projects are focused on themes rather than 10/10. Ki is fantastic and addicted is slightly less so to me. Gotta love Devin. Supercrush(3:04..."you left me to die!") and Ih-Ah(the country duet I guess?) are my favs. This record would be a dream for high-end headphones. You like Ki? It was subdued but it plays its part and has beaut production.
@chazgcg You're right, both this and Ki are fecking *amazing* on high-end cans, and cranked through a set of KRKs, man, a couple of albums you can just sit and listen to. Some fantastic production, you can hear him getting there on Synchestra but now he's got the process mastered!
To say that one of his songs is "just not him" doesn't make any sense to me. He has so many different styles you really can't compare. Ih-Ah is prob my favorite song on the album. He's done nothing short of genius to me.
