In marching band, we're actually playing The Rakes of Mallow. So you have this upbeat cheery irish jig with all these bagpipes and color guard dancers and suddenly it gets faster and faster and faster and BAM! Crown Imperial! We actuaally play a much faster variation on the ending which is a huge contrast from the false sense of security section that is the Rakes of Mallow.
grand & pompous ...but as the melody progresses...it is not as nice as STAR WARS theme song...probably John Williams could have improved on this song!!
But still it is a very solid and grand opening theme
We too are playing this for Full Orchestra, and, as we live in the USA, at the regal middle section I always think: "how very British"... if anyone takes that as an insult, well im sorry.
@TheWickedNorth Um... Would you mind giving me a copy as well? I have the same problem as the user above: Brilliant piece, but can't find it anywhere...
Thanks very much, in any case, for putting this up.
Most popular Mp3 sites - it's a well known piece of classical music. There should be more than 1 recording, so choose your orchestra - listen to the preview. Napster, iTunes, Amazon Mp3 Download should all have this.
Yes, it was composed at the time of the coronation of George VI (the date had originally been set for the coronation of Edward VIII before he abdicated). The BBC commissioned the piece for their coverage -- it was not used at the coronation itself. It's a great piece for orchestra or band and add the organ at the end.
Love this for its true feeling of a genuinely royal procession. Something about this piece feels so big and eternal. Yale uses it for its' graduation ceremonies instead of the usual Pomp and Circumstance. It was written for the Coronation of King George the Sixth. But that is about all I know about it. I've always felt that this piece goes Elgar one better. Thrilling music!
William Walton was an absolute genius and should be ranked in the top tier of composers. Sure, he is well respected and still gets a fair amount of play, but his style has landed him on the periphery of the perennial greats. Not in my book, though. He's top shelf all the way. Brilliant!
So my band teacher was a little stupid and made us play this song.....we are 8th and 9th graders. Does anybody have any tips on triple tounging for clarinets??? It would help a bunch.
Practice double tonguing by saying the syllable too-koo for Cl and/or Sax. It takes a while to iron out the squeaks and maintain a firm embouchure. You goal to to make your double tonguing sound as clear and no different than single tonguing. Practice it on any one note in a quarter note pattern at about 60-80 beats per min, the progress by getting faster. Work your way to eighth notes by stating on a slow tempo then increase the tempo to your desired result.
A truly inspirational and uplifting piece written when one could be really proud to be british unlike now as we are , the soft underbelly of Europe a mecca for terrorists and extremists who come here with the very intention of destroying britishness!!!
The Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra, Repertory Level is going to be playing this. The maestoso section in the middle has a difficult accompaniment, and unfortunately for the celli there are no open strings. Can someone help me with the fingering?
Quite a fantastic piece; especially love the third recapitulation of the opening theme with the cymbal and arpeggio interpolations. Should be played more often.
Yes, I agree. I recently discovered this music on a "Last Night at the Proms" disc a friend gave me and I got goosebumps. I love the sprightly brass passages. Something very reassuring about this music. By the way I gave you a thumbs up. Cheers.
The 27th Lancers (from Revere, Massachusetts)played this as their "off-the-line" in 1976. It completely blew me away, and has been one of my favorite marches since. It's a tremendous piece.
Did anyone happen to hear this on "With Heart and Voice" on 89.1 in Philadelphia by any chance? (10/26/2008)They played a wonderful version of it with pipe organ but I don't know who the orchestra or organist was?
im playing this for a band im in outside f school. were taking it a lot slower than this, but were still pretty good.
