I don't watch the show, though I wish I could, so you'll have to cut me some slack. But I thought the Cigarette Smoking Man and his company were allies with the aliens.
@SamhainTheDark they are allied with the aliens but they killed the alien due to a secret agreement made between the US, Soviet Union, and other folks that whichever government captures an Alien/EBE "must be responsible for its destruction." This clip skips a few seconds where one of the two men mentions that agreement and that agents of other government are probably coming to investigate.
@SamhainTheDark not entirely, the aliens approached them, and they had to think of a way to make it work, to cover it up. The Aliens were "returning" to the planet, to colonise, but they had to think of a way to make this more acceptable to the masses, They really felt like what they did was for the benefit of the planet, which is what makes these villans so perfect. At the same time, both the aliens and the government had their own secret agenda's
@szubanator the syndicate of aliens or the government? that of the aliens was never really replied, but there are "rebel" groups of aliens that are against it, it becomes a bit farfetched.
@szubanator If you ment the group of the cigarette man, they are beyond law and don't really answer to anyone but themselves, they answer to eachother and are willing to kill eachother.
Best episode of X-Files. No debate.
One of the best TV shows that has been and ever will be. No debate.

Why shoot the damn thing? It's not like they'd someday see it slinging coffee at Tim Horton's!
