@u780 The reason I did that was because the bass, though light in it's presence, is very detailed and tight. An EQ can somewhat make it more enjoyable. The midrange and treble sounds too sharp and artificial to me. YMMV.
I dunno about you but I just got a pair of theses and let me tell you they have BASS. They hit hard! Just dial up the EQ for more bass. I put theses babies on my XF-Fi Fatal1ty and whoa! Turned up the EQ for bass and the first thing I did was load up Brass Monkey from the Beatie Boys. Holy crap do these things hit hard! They sound amazing! This is w/o an amp btw. Imagine with one. O.o! Pick these bad boys up! @ only $89.00 its a STEAL!!
These were not burned in after just two weeks unless you had them playing at relatively high volume almost constantly. These headphones need 100-200 hours of burn-in to reach their full potential, and even after that, you're experiencing nothing if you don't have a decent amp (depending on your source, of course).
i recently bought some Audio Technica M50 and do something similar to the boom mic technique you used. Where did you buy the mic and do you know if they have any for 3.5mm jack? Thank You
Why did you give the bass a 7 out of 10? That would mean the bass is pretty decent with this headphone and that's not the case at all. Even you said it has VERY light bass in a reply to someone's comment above. At the very most bass should be a 5 out of 10.
Nice review, I have the x11-dss turtle beach combo I.e. The dx11 and was wondering if I plugged these into the dss would they be less or more massy with explosions etc than say the x41 or my x11 headset? I know you said they aren't very bassy in general but it's hard to get an idea what the bass is like
@ThePaulg123 The AD700 is naturally very bass-lite. The only way to make these headphones bassy is to EQ the hell out of them. The bass is adequate enough for me to be able to know that a grenade just blew up behind me. Like I said before, the AD700 are known for it's soundstage, so you really feel like you're there in the game.
@Goofygoober497 The X-41 receiver allows me to get dolby headphone 7.1 into the headphones. So I can get sound coming from all around me through headphones. It's like surround sound with MORE detail.
@Goofygoober497 They are headphones. You can plug them into anything with a 3.5 mm jack. So you can plug them into most tvs. If you want to use a receiver, you can use the X41 and Tritton Receivers. But the most popular one is the Astro Mixamp. There is a wireless and wired option, so you can do the boom-mic mod as shown in the video.
what all do i need to buy for these to work on my 360? including a mic be specific please like the whole 3.5 and 2.5 jacks and what not PLEASE help me out.... great review by the way you seem like you really know your stuff ha
@thorfoxxx turtle beach sells something called turtle beach dss, its a 5.1 processor, or the samething called astro mixamp and some normal mic attached to tha ath ad700
Well too late for any other options now since i just received my ATH-AD700, do you need to use any kind of equalizer? It sounds so different to my Steelseries 5HV2, its not as high pitched i dont know how to explain it, these headphones sound more like bassy, and really toned or something...
I think he was asking which ones to get. I've heard some bad things about the 555's, I'd look at others. Head over to head-fi.org and do a search for 555's and i'm sure you'll find some relevant articles.
@LOLJKAccount I ahve these and to be honest for music, thay arent that great. for gaming like mw2, theyre pretty damn good. better than astros turtlebeaches etc.
It'll give you awesome positioning of the sounds in the movie but it will lack the weight in the bass needed for explosions and stuff like that. Unless you EQ the crap out of them. Good movie headphones I'd recommend are the Audio Technica M50 and Sennheiser HD600's.
Great review thank you. I just recently bought a pair from ebay for $145 AUD and are being sent over as we speak ! What you mentioned about sound stage made me VERY happy. I read some reviews before my purchase but im a audio n00b and didn't understand much on what people say. So thank you for explaining sound stage. I am really excited now ! =D
I am looking to get some new headphones. I am going to use for a little gaming, but mostly listening to music. I am not worried about the lack of base, because I don't listen to rap, hip hop etc. I mainly listen to all kinds of rock and alternative. Are these headphones a good choice?
This headphones will fit your head. Also, I found this boom mic laying around in my house. It has no name brand. It probably came from my OLD Trition headset.
have you used mixing software on your pc to jack up the bass? or a program like windows media player and turned on the srs effects and turned up the bass?
I understand that not everyone will like these headphones, but i'm baffled by the "unnatural tonality" comments. I don't agree with your review of these, but that's just one person's opinion and everyone has their own regarding what sounds good. I've found these to be an absolute steal for $95. For under $150 I've found these to be the best headphones. For under $200 I'd recommend to anyone the Shure SRH-840. Overall, not a bad review. I just didn't agree with it.
Audio Technica makes great stuff. I use the ATH-M40fs and I can't believe I waited so long to get better headphones (I used to buy those cheap ass 10-20 dollar headphones that would break down in a matter of weeks, lol).
iPod sound quality is underrated, me I use Wadia docks. These send DIGITAl to my Chord and BelCanto DAC's. At this point the iPod becomes a formidable player, besting anything portable with ease.

iPod used only as digital storage,to feed the DAC's.
The iPod's sound quality is underrated in fact. But, your setup bsod4u2 leaves the iPod's sound quality out of the equation. All the iPod is doing is storing the digital files and sending them off to an external DAC. Any device storing degitial music files will sound the same when sending it off to a DAC. Digital is only in the form of 1's and 0's and it either gets there or it doesn't.
The AD700's will have bigger sound stage than the HD555's meaning it'll be better for providing that surround sound effect. Also, the AD700's are more detailed so therefore you will be able to distinguish between different sound in the game easier. Those wing looking thingies easily adjusts to your head shape and size allowing the fit to be more comfortable.
@OwnDiZzL3 I think gaming is like driving while talking or texting on a cellphone. You've got too many senses going on at one time to really notice a bigger surround sound effect. I would think that you'd want to wear something with good quality but in par with extremes in terms of audio - what I mean is that I think in gaming its better to focus on extreme low freq rumble and bass and thats it. Gaming is not about critical listening, its about indistinguishable immersion.
Very true, but with games like Call Of Duty you will be able to accurately tell where sounds are coming from due to the dolby headphone surround effect. You should try it, it's amazing!
Thanks for the review. I think I may end up with the A700's (not the AD700) since they're supposed to have better bass. I'll be using it for gaming as well, but I really want that "boom" effect of deep bass for games like MW2 and such. Thanks again!
not bad review dude. but the reason why you think the music quality throught these is not good is becuse these are audiophile headphones for used with a GOOD audio music source, eg. a audiophile cd player and amp. NOT a ipod playing compressed mp3 rubbish!!! that it why the music sucks, because the sound of the ipod sucks.
I own a pair of $1,099 custom earphones known as the JH13 Pro. I plug those earphones into the same exact setup and I'm always blown away by the sound quality. I don't use MP3. I only use lossless audio codecs such as ALAC. Also, as you can see in the video my iPod is feeding a line out signal from the DAC to an external portable amplifier. The iPod is a great sounding player. Well, the iPod Touch 2 and 3g as well as the iPhone 3GS are the best sounding iPod's.
These headphones are priced fairly low for a reason. You can't expect too much from them. If I'm waaaay more than satisfied with the sound quality of plugging a very very expensive earphone into my iPod setup. Keep in mind that this earphone being so expensive will show a ton of more flaws in the music, source, etc... I then plug in these Audio Technica's into the same setup and I'm not satisfied with the sound at all.
