You all are talking about what he was and not learning about who he is and the talent that he gave us! First of all, a legend talking about legends, and one thang about him, he wasn't self centered and stuck on himself! This only makes me miss that voice, the way he would still command our attention on the airwaves with new music and him being anything other than a storyteller of love, never crosses my mind! For further instructions check the classic "Wait For Love"!
To a great extent you can hear the influence of the group Chic in many of Luther's works, as far as some of the music goes and big time in the background vocals. Before becoming a solo artist he sang as a background singer for Chic produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. And Chic was dealing with Aretha, Diana and many others that the crew would come to work with.
i swear i love the man at slimheir ne way he cum, don't bother me, but for me musically he is near if not better then the greats like M.GAY, ETC...... he is way up their and i never knew it til he was gone. Luther I LOVE YOU. XXXXX RY XXXXX
It's so sad; it's so obvious that he's gay in this video. It emanates from him. "I'd be an interior decorator." It was the stress of hiding his secret from his black audience because black people (as a group) hates gays!
Who the fuck cares is the man was gay. HE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST VOCALISTS MALE OR FEMALE. Freddie Jackson is very talent to. People need to pull there head out there asses and listen to the music and stop asuming things!!
@nickelwindow53 I know. I am not gay myself but I think being on that journey 2 b true 2 who you r is a universal path. I am reading his biography now and I can read between the lines. He was known for having real bad mood swings and of his battle with his weight I think r byproducts of stress he felt over his personal life. But at the same time you have 2 remember that homophobia was rampant back then, especially with the rise of AIDS and the association people made with it and gay people.
Too bad we will never know what luther was thinkiing regarding his sexuality and I know for a fact he was not alone with the being famous and in the closet battle. I think Michael Jackson, Prince, and Little Richard, kurt franklin and sooo many others have the same battle! I just wish Blacks would except you being gay as easy as Whites do and then we would not have that battle! I soo Agree Luther was a genius and I have not heard a voice like that sense!
@nickelwindow53 You hit it right on the head, and I wish Blacks would except you for being gay as easily as Whites. It really is a shame because, I'd bet my last dollar, his being gay had something to do with his early death and overall bad health! Can you imagine the stress?!!
@nickelwindow53 ...well he paid $20 million to settle out of court in a pedophile complaint in 1992 or so. Let's use some common sense. This implies that Michael was probably a pedophile, nobody with any kind of integrity would make a millionaire of someone extorting money from you or defaming your reputation, so I don't have a lot of respect for Michael Jackson although he was a remarkable talent.
@911insidejo8 Doesn't it also imply extortion, what self respecting parent would take money and walk away knowing that their child was molested. So sorry, I have no respect for those liars who implied that MJ was a pedophile. If it was true and the boy was my son, I would have done everything I could to destroy the man, not take his money and run. That was greed pure and simple!!!
@nickelwindow53 if i'm not mistaken, Little Richard has always been open about the fact that he's gay and michael jackson has always struck me as asexual. prince seems like he can be straight or bi and kurt franklin seems mostly straight, but you never know.
@nickelwindow53 But i do think that the 90's would have been a good time for him to come out. I do think he was gay and I would not have loved him or his music any less. He really was a musical genius.
@fatbustersamurai You are so right. Its hard enough tryna be a regular gay man, but if you have someone that is famous and tryna keep it in the closet like him I bet it was alot on him and his health and this was the pre days of TMZ and Paparazzi being so bad. They would have had pics of Luther and some man all on the net now days
I truly believe that his sexuality made him more considerate and less selfish than others. I never met him, but I can imagine that aside from being the best singer of our generation, he was a pretty good guy. Certainly, like all of us, he had his issues.
I have always appreciated his respectful ways and just feel blessed that we had him. And by the way, I am not gay.
listen young people, good times are coming to and end, a true gift from God, we will always love Luther, not alot of gifted talented artist are left. enjoy while you can.
hahahaha all these comments about luthers jheri curl got me in stitches!! but all jokes aside, even his talking voice was as smooth as silk, rite...? miss u lu xoxo
lmao.....i just recongnized that....them damn jerri curls caused a lot of mofo's trouble-michael jackson with the pepsi commercial, dude on coming to america!
Oh, Luther was gay, alright. But I agree with other posters: it didn't matter to me in the slightest. I was and always shall remain a HUGE fan of the incredible talent and unmatchable voice possessed by Mr. Vandross. And that is what really matters, not what he did or did not do in a bedroom with a consenting adult of whatever gender.
RIP LUTHER RONZONI VANDROSS -- gone too soon, always imitated, never duplicated, and never to be forgotten!
@dmustard11 Honestly, he was gay but that should not matter, I loooooved that man, he was always one of my idols but I really feel that at his age there was no point in hiding what he was.
For real...what a bunch of dumb asses!!! Do you want to hear great music, or you looking for a date??? Shut the hell up and listen to a gift from God. Losers.
LOL, no secrect that he was gay and a bit on the "fem" side I mean you can just study the man to see that, but so what!? Luther has a legacy and had a persona that was so engaging on the stage. He had a great sense of humor as you heard in this video. I wish I had the opportunity to meet him. :( He's missed but I listen to him EVERYDAY. :)
STOP DA MADNESS! Luther Vandross was not gay! All straight men want to be interior decorators. All straight men obsess over Aretha, Diana and Dionne. lol. In any case Luther was one of the greatest voices music has ever seen and what he did in his bedroom was his business. But urrrrrrbody knew about Ms. Luther.... HOW U DOIN'????????
Sadly, there are very few good, soulful male singers remaining today (Smokey and Stevie are the two remaining "classics".) When rappers get older, they move on to something out. Hopefully the Obama years will bring a whole new breed of soulful male singers, including some blue-eyed ones as well.
Damn! Will we ever get to a point of simply appreciating an artist for their incredible gifts to the world without speculating about who they are loving or sexin? Luther is an icon and a legend and should be respected as such!
This 'whose gay in showbusiness' is getting so freakin' boring!
Guess I struck a nerve with the anger in your comments. Excuse me for stating the obvious what every knows, sorry you have a problem with you... and know you are dismissed! All I did was make a statement and you replied and when I do, I become a nobody? Let me tell you, if i'm nobody certainly you are too for arguing with me, get a life!
Clap 3 times, spin around and say the person you want to be with forever, post this on 7 pages. On this Saturday that person will realize how much you mean to them... you don't do this... that person will think the opposite and never want to see your face again! It worked for me, just try!!!
hahahaha... that was hilarious when he said that.. Luther had a great sense of humor but he was so guarded in public, there was more than was displayed but he was weary of his audience.
IMHO, almost ALL of the really great "lovesong" singers have strong feminine aspects to thier personality. Massive testosterone gets guys jumping and moshing, but it takes a tender touch to warm the heart. Luther, Smokey, Barry White, Frankie Avalon, even modern artists like Brian McKnight and Dave Matthews and Adam Duritz have feminine aspects. If Luther was gay, good for him, he still speaks right to my heart.
LOL sorry but Luther was much more feminine than the others you mentioned and they all had women. It's a known fact that Luther was gay but he just felt like not making a public announcement of it.
Luther was "outed" by friends after his death.. and his silence on the issue it was evident, no straight man when asked are you gay replies... "It's none of your damn business." Don't tel me you're one of those bigots who are against gays. Accept the fact that he was a talented, talented man.. who was also gay. Get over it.
I said he was about his music, and "It's none of your damn business" is right.
For someone whose life purpose was to sing and create music, it's not your business what his sexual preference is.Why should he tell you?Again, who are you?
A nobody on youtube, commenting. He owes you no explanation about his personal life.
You'd rather judge..just as you do me as "one of those bigots."
I'm not sure if that's healthy but if it works for you... ok.. I was in the closet for years till I found the right one, at the time and was living on my own. But basicially, if you don't come out, it will be the open secret, like Luther's sexuality was.
That is sooo true! Good point you make. I am 25 on my own and still in the closet to everyone but my parents and thats cuz they so damn nosey! lol But I do wanna find the right one someday. Its hard to find a good man. Were did you meet your dude?
I just think its sad that Black people make it harder for a gay blk man to be comfortable in his own skin were whites are not that bad on their gays. And what did you do about parents. Mine know, but we dont discuss it like its going to disappear or something?!?! Its crazy.....
Well, i'm not seeing him anymore but at the time we met I was really closeted.. until we met and my ideas changed. My parents are ok... I mean we don't really talk about it... but they love me. My mom is very relgious so she has her views. But I told her as long as it don't interfer with a mother and son relationship, we'll get along. and we do. I've been blessed not to have my sexuality not to be a big issue, but i'm also not famous, yet lol... and that's true, whites are more liberal to gays
I would not neccessarily agree with that. I think ignorance is universal and knows no color line. I think tolerance is on the rise in the black community especially in the younger generation. I think the more people that come out of the closet and display that there is more to a person than just being "gay". Gay people go to school, vote pay taxes, buy homes, have dreams and want to be loved just like anyone else. Fear and and ignorance is powerful but Love, Compassion and Tolerance are greater
my point exactly I always tell people I like pizza, I like to dance, I am gay....ETC. Its just one piece of a huge puzzle that makes someone, but like you said. He prbably did feel that pressure at that time to stay closted, but I agree maybe he couldnt have came out in the 80s, but the 90s and especially the late 90s he would have gotten a bigger fan base honestly!
It was but it's ok... people are gay, straight, bi, black, white, asian I mean it's just a fact. I just wished society would accept everyone for who they are and Luther's silence verifies he didn't feel that was the case when it came to his audience.
dear god bring us back luther vandross in return will give u chris brown !!!

What does that matter?
He never said he wasn't gay and was parading around with a woman like some singers, athletes, politicians.
He was about his music, and that's what he's remembered for, everything else is irrelevant.
What are you remembered for? Matter of fact, who are you?

Luther was "outed" by friends after his death.. and his silence on the issue it was evident, no straight man when asked are you gay replies... "It's none of your damn business." Don't tel me you're one of those bigots who are against gays. Accept the fact that he was a talented, talented man.. who was also gay. Get over it.

I have a problem with Luther being gay?
I said he was about his music, and "It's none of your damn business" is right.
For someone whose life purpose was to sing and create music, it's not your business what his sexual preference is.Why should he tell you?Again, who are you?
A nobody on youtube, commenting. He owes you no explanation about his personal life.
You'd rather judge..just as you do me as "one of those bigots."

Thats what I want to do like Luther. I am gay, but not out and I want it to stay low key until after I am long gone then I dont care if it gets out

Its crazy.....
nickelwindow53 1 year ago
Well, i'm not seeing him anymore but at the time we met I was really closeted.. until we met and my ideas changed. My parents are ok... I mean we don't really talk about it... but they love me. My mom is very relgious so she has her views. But I told her as long as it don't interfer with a mother and son relationship, we'll get along. and we do. I've been blessed not to have my sexuality not to be a big issue, but i'm also not famous, yet lol... and that's true, whites are more liberal to gays

lol...you are crazy/ So were do you llive?
