uck off wth that man. the whole point of reggae is to resist the opression of the white man so y is a white women singing about marcus garvey A BLACK NATIONALIST
@rastavinnie1 ...As for opposing oppression, it's best to oppose it without invidious racism ... and without others setting you at each-others throats.
keep telling the truth Ms O conor. I love you . sinead is a true example of " Dont gain the world and loose your soul". she tells it like it is. God Bless Sinead O'Conor.
Rastafari is not about the color of a skin, nor the color of eyes. Dreadlocks don't make a Rasta, Rastafari expresses his/her way of thinking with dreadlocks. Rastafari is not even a religion. It is a deeper consciousness, a way of life, as JAHLOVEANDLIVE already said. ONE love, ONE blood, ONE aim, ONE destiny.
Sinead passes through life as a Rasta. Even on earlier albums you hear her coming to wiseness, and as time went by she found truth in Rastafari. If anyone should be singing it, it's her
Music is Music, Nationalism is Nationalism, where as Jah loves everyone, Marcus was doing as he was suppose to do, and that was loving his people... She has no ideal of who she is singing about, Marcus Garvey was no Martin Luther King Jr. if you haven't noticed... Listen to the mans message, it's clear... I'm pretty sure that the world as envisioned by Garvey would not sit so well with Sinead O`Connor. Evidently she's just singing songs....
Truth is Truth. In the 1600's after Cromwell went and killed 1/3 of the population of Ireland, then sent boatloads of Irish to Barbados and Jamaica AS SLAVES and Indentured Servants.
Irish and African cultures mixed and meshed with each other down there. Irish Folk music found a home in Jamaica. This is known. Do the Knowledge. Read "To Hell or Barbados." The Soul of the Earth wants Love not Ignorance. BLESS UP to my Sister Sinead!
I am glad that a white baldhead woman is singing a song of black roots and of an African prophet who was sold as a slave for nothing but rice, but she has no idea what these lyrics can mean unless she has walked in the shoes of african people who's roots are slavery, but she never could because she is WHITE. This music is for the upliftment of African people, yes it's also for unity of all people but not this song, this song is to explain the hardships that white people put black people through.
To be rasta is more than the colour or the dreadlocks, it's a way of life, a spirituality bigger than the colour of man skin : remember "war" speech of his Imperial Majesty singing by The prophet Bob
I'm sure she understands that, the rasta philosophy and sympathises. She suffered a lot too, being white as she is, Sinéad never really fit in... And most importantly, we all came from the same Father/Mother, who she calls Jah and I call God/ the Goddess.
You so full of shit, did you that Sinead and Burning Spear accually are friends? Sinead is a great person, she stands up for the oppressed people, white, black, woman, childer. She probably knows the meaning of these lyrics better than you do. And please, this is 2009, there is no black and white anymore. You sound like a racist to me. Marcus Garvey was not a slave, he was a Jamaican publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, Black Nationalist, Pan-Africanist. Get that straight
In Ireland we suffered a lot under British tyranny. In the mid 1800s we had a famine, a state of constant war from the 1200s when the English first arrived, and in the 1600s, 1700s, 1800s we were deported around the world as slaves or as prisoners for up to 70 years which is almost the same thing. These are facts that are taught to us when we grow up so we have alot of empathy for suffering peoples. Ireland is one of the countries that gives the most to famine struck countries.
@grimaces And myself in Canada, grandmother a Garvey. Our First Nations here, same shite. Takes one to know one. Now we have Truth and Resolution committees to look into residential school. My uncle who was well know and had written about the abuse by church in Ireland, didn't live long enough, but thank fucking christ it put truth into the mouths of those who could not speak in county Offaly, and those bastards. I am one of those legacies as well. And , god damn you all evil bastards.
@Rasmelful You are whitewashing history here by saying that only a certain group of people, be it the Jews, the Irish, the Blacks have a special position in the suffering of the world. The real question is not 'who' sings this song but 'how' she sings it. And while we should never forget, passing on the pain to the next generation is a disservice to those people who really suffered in the past. They lived and died through the worst inhumanity praying for what we forget we have.
It's a feeling not a color. Look at all the races of Jamaicans. If someone has something to say from the heart , we welcome you. How wonderful to experience our music on a universal level.
Reggae came partially from New Orleans way back in the day. People in Jamaica could get the NOLA radio stations which beamed out clear over the saltwater. They listened and molded what they heard ( a mix of blues, zydeco, jazz, blues and country) into their own thing
sry to offend, but i am not being negative, i from trinidad and grow pon reggae, is just reality that sinead is a culture vulture. singing BLACK ppl redemption songs to further her career. then allyuh justifying and saying I hating on she. let she copy her own irish ancestors. Clearly unno nuh kno what old marcus about
I'm not offended, no apology needed. But if people could only draw upon their own culture for musical influence what a dull musical world. Reggae was influenced by other cultures. I'm sure some musicians from the Carribean enjoy playing something such as Mozart. Peter Tosh played with Eric clapton. Mikey Dread produced dub tunes by the Clash. Bob Marley had a "Punky Reggae Party" that included the Damned, the Jam and the Clash. If you look at the history of reggae...I'm out of room. Peace
I don't think she needs to further her career any further with Reggae. Perhaps if you did any digging before posting an asinine comment as such, you may have noticed she has done plenty of "our people's music"... I think she really sings for the oppressed of any culture, regardless of color of skin. But, hey thanks for making things black and white. you dont know what your talking about, marcus garvey was inspired by irish fight for freedom when he was in london, so dont be making a fool of yourself, so marcus can copy irish but irish cant copy marcus?? why is this
Marcus Garvey was a son of Koromanti , Maroon. That is his influence. 1739 Koromanti or Maroons signed a treaty for there own territory in Jamaica. They have been fighting as free thinking people since 1655. This means 345 years of free African thought in Jamaica. This is the mother our evolution and revolution !

its sad how the modern music scene steals music from masters of the craft. This song was created by "Burning Root" a real roots reggae group. The message of this song is bigger than Sinead O Connor. Dont be fooled by the bull.
You dont kwon what you are talking about, first of all the "band Burning Root" is acually one artist called Burning Spear and another thing is that Sinead O`conner probably knows more of the meaning of this song than you do. And i know that Burning Spear didnt mind that she sang this song because thay spent time together when Sinead interviewed him, check it out on Google
Great tune this, good by Ms O'Connor - great by Burning Spear! Lets hope the Reggae album she has done bring Jamaican music to lots more ears, well done Sinead
Sinead O'Connor is always challenging our musical ears. She continues to grow and expand her creativity. She has assembled some of the finest Jamaican musicians. There is no fluff here. The woman is singing roots music. This a Burning Spear classic. This was the first song I was introduced to the Spear. Sinead has probably lost millions because of her politics and her numerous musical directions. She is a unique artist, in this money driven entertainment environment.
She always seemed the most happy while performing this kind of music. She actually enjoyed performing, so I think she should continue to do reggae/roots music.
praises...sinead has some balls...anyone remember what she did in the early 90's on saturday night live...pretty rowdy lady...gota love sly and robbie...wonder what burning spear thinks about this?
Peace back to you, Brother, but the problem is that you are labeling and categorizing people by skin color. Do you think that ALL black people ALL agree on EVERYTHING? IF not, then don't be trying to 'exclude' anyone. Yeshua himself said "In my father's house there are many rooms." In other words, there is room for us ALL at the table! And Bob Marley was a biracial man who respected all races!
America is for for Native Americans, Asia is for Asians, Europe is for Europeans, And so is Africa for Africans. I respect all races, but just as Bob Marley I believe in the Marcus Garvey philosophy of repatriation.
It seems you are trying to segregate humans. I have no problem with black repatriation to Africa..IF that is what the people want. It should be a choice taken freely. I do support people of ALL races moving freely on the Earth. It's not OUR Earth...it's God's earth!
malcolm i think u should find fault with racism and not the human race.you have become the beast you so try to destroy.think about that!! if it wasn't for whites we might not be where we are.peace
You people are so hypocrite! The only reason yu like the song is cause it is sung by SO'C,not even knowing what the song is about!I guess it is kinda hard to relate to the song if you aint black(diaspora).Do you know who Marcus Garvey is!?I guess not,Couse if yu did,we wouldn't be in this discussion....
Erm, actually I took a black studies class and studied Mr. Garvey. Did you? Or do you think that having black skin automatically makes you an expert on all things black? Cast down ye buckets where you are...
Funny how yu accuse me of being "the beast",while yu cut the edge of this discussion. Iff it wasn't for europeans(whites),we would all be in Africa and wouldn't be suffering like are brothers are right now couse the mess colonialism left would not exist. So plz explain where we are that is so great in ur(white)view!
Well, Malcolm X, I can assure you that Africa, while the Motherland, is NOT FREE of all problems. Even without white interference, there has been terrible intertribal warfare there for millenia. And many horrid diseases, famines, droughts. Do you blame whites for that, too? Wake up you are a hateful racist.
I gather that you are white American. But I do applaud you on your views concerning all races coming together in the Holy name Of our Great Savior the Lord Jesus Christ. But I do suggest to you that you should become more out-spoken for the cause. And dig a little more dipper into the struggle. Because it just not our struggle its all(races struggle. When we have that view.
Don't trip off of universalist, such as, "bargainmom" that you've been dialoguing with over this video and what not. Just like puppets and robots, these same universalists don't understand our struggle.
Don't you DARE speak ill of this woman! She is a BRAVE human BEING. Don't let race and sex and gender and money muddy the waters. Know he right and do not right...shall be spanked with many stripes! People of ALL races! Remember Bob Marley...who became a Christian in the months before he died...There is NO Hiding Place from the Father of Creation!!!
WHAT? Irish are the 'Blacks of Europe' and she has more SOUL than you could hope to have, do you think your skin color makes you More Righteous in the Eyes of God?!!! This woman is a troubled woman who is Seeking Truth. Therefore, give her Props and Much Respect.
This song is BRILLIANT. I like Sinead's version better because 1) slower 2) you can hear each and every brilliant lyric. It's an homage, not a take off.
Horrible. She has no connection to meaning behind the lyrics of this song. She's colonializing a classic. Listen to the actual Burning Spear song; it's real music with feeling, not commercial late show filler
I agree. Irish people KNOW about racism...they were deeply hated, murdered, subjugated by the British. In fact, some Irish were SOLD AS SLAVES back in the day. They were intermarried with people in Barbados, they are called 'Redshanks.' Look up your history!
Yet she very probably made Marcus Garvey known to a, i suppose you mean, "white" audience. By the way: i first knew Burning Spear's version. But please do not feel that offended about this Sinead version, i now hear for the first time, but see it positive: Marcus Garvey deserves to be known by all and Black American history in general must be known by all people too, and so on: history of all the people together.
P.S. larslars2: do not abuse the term "colonializing" for what it is not; i mean: feel DEEPER... so then you can distinguish who is "abusing" and who is not, but so do not 'abuse' the term "colonializing" too quickly because we do not want it to become a 'fashion' becaue that is not of any help at all.
Correction, P.S. larslars2: do not abuse the term "colonializing" for what it is not; i mean: feel DEEPER... so then you can distinguish who is "abusing" and who is not, but so do not use the term "colonializing" too quickly because we do not want it to become a 'fashion' because that is not of any help at all.
You are falling for a Lie from the Enemy: Oldest Trick in the book, "Divide and Conquer." KNOW That your enemy is not a race, color, class, or sex, but Evil Incarnate! We are ALL God's people...Black White Gentile Jew if you worship the Creator, the one True Living God, Christ Jesus, You are REDEEMED!

She always seemed the most happy while performing this kind of music. She actually enjoyed performing, so I think she should continue to do reggae/roots music.

I'm talking to black people ms Bargain.
peace...
MalcolmXtra 4 years ago
Peace back to you, Brother, but the problem is that you are labeling and categorizing people by skin color. Do you think that ALL black people ALL agree on EVERYTHING? IF not, then don't be trying to 'exclude' anyone. Yeshua himself said "In my father's house there are many rooms." In other words, there is room for us ALL at the table! And Bob Marley was a biracial man who respected all races!
bargainmom 4 years ago
America is for for Native Americans, Asia is for Asians, Europe is for Europeans, And so is Africa for Africans. I respect all races, but just as Bob Marley I believe in the Marcus Garvey philosophy of repatriation.
MalcolmXtra 4 years ago
Perhaps so. But I disagree, the WHOLE EARTH is for ALL PEOPLE.
WarisPeaceII 4 years ago 3
Yes, I believe so, too. The fool above preaches segregation.
mattd624 4 years ago
It seems you are trying to segregate humans. I have no problem with black repatriation to Africa..IF that is what the people want. It should be a choice taken freely. I do support people of ALL races moving freely on the Earth. It's not OUR Earth...it's God's earth!

first equal rights and justice. Then we can U.N.I.T.E.
MalcolmXtra 4 years ago
So, then where do you live?
mattd624 4 years ago
malcolm i think u should find fault with racism and not the human race.you have become the beast you so try to destroy.think about that!! if it wasn't for whites we might not be where we are.peace
shittypuzzle 4 years ago
You people are so hypocrite! The only reason yu like the song is cause it is sung by SO'C,not even knowing what the song is about!I guess it is kinda hard to relate to the song if you aint black(diaspora).Do you know who Marcus Garvey is!?I guess not,Couse if yu did,we wouldn't be in this discussion....
MalcolmXtra 4 years ago
Erm, actually I took a black studies class and studied Mr. Garvey. Did you? Or do you think that having black skin automatically makes you an expert on all things black? Cast down ye buckets where you are...
bargainmom 4 years ago
Funny how yu accuse me of being "the beast",while yu cut the edge of this discussion. Iff it wasn't for europeans(whites),we would all be in Africa and wouldn't be suffering like are brothers are right now couse the mess colonialism left would not exist. So plz explain where we are that is so great in ur(white)view!
MalcolmXtra 4 years ago
Well, Malcolm X, I can assure you that Africa, while the Motherland, is NOT FREE of all problems. Even without white interference, there has been terrible intertribal warfare there for millenia. And many horrid diseases, famines, droughts. Do you blame whites for that, too? Wake up you are a hateful racist.
bargainmom 4 years ago
I gather that you are white American. But I do applaud you on your views concerning all races coming together in the Holy name Of our Great Savior the Lord Jesus Christ. But I do suggest to you that you should become more out-spoken for the cause. And dig a little more dipper into the struggle. Because it just not our struggle its all(races struggle. When we have that view.

MalcomXtra,
Don't trip off of universalist, such as, "bargainmom" that you've been dialoguing with over this video and what not.

Remember Bob Marley...who became a Christian in the months before he died...There is NO Hiding Place from the Father of Creation!!!

i sry but im offended , she has no true affinity for the black movement

Your hatred and racism WILL do you in!
bargainmom 4 years ago
Horrible. She has no connection to meaning behind the lyrics of this song. She's colonializing a classic. Listen to the actual Burning Spear song; it's real music with feeling, not commercial late show filler
larslars2 4 years ago
I disagree strongly. She has great connection to the lyrics, look at her history, and she should never be accused of commercialism.
asaddo 4 years ago 2
I agree. Irish people KNOW about racism...they were deeply hated, murdered, subjugated by the British. In fact, some Irish were SOLD AS SLAVES back in the day. They were intermarried with people in Barbados, they are called 'Redshanks.' Look up your history!
bargainmom 4 years ago 2
Yet she very probably made Marcus Garvey known to a, i suppose you mean, "white" audience. By the way: i first knew Burning Spear's version. But please do not feel that offended about this Sinead version, i now hear for the first time, but see it positive: Marcus Garvey deserves to be known by all and Black American history in general must be known by all people too, and so on: history of all the people together.

P.S. larslars2: do not abuse the term "colonializing" for what it is not; i mean: feel DEEPER... so then you can distinguish who is "abusing" and who is not, but so do not 'abuse' the term "colonializing" too quickly because we do not want it to become a 'fashion' becaue that is not of any help at all.
musicminded64 4 years ago
Correction, P.S. larslars2: do not abuse the term "colonializing" for what it is not; i mean: feel DEEPER... so then you can distinguish who is "abusing" and who is not, but so do not use the term "colonializing" too quickly because we do not want it to become a 'fashion' because that is not of any help at all.
