I've seen losing candidates (such as Mockus in Colombia and Maria Corina Machado) win in internet polls then lose by wide margins in real elections and polls. This is not a USA thing, it's called self-selection bias.

3. Also: Paul got the same number of delegates, even as he had less votes.

I could not find one single online poll that had anyone OTHER than Ron Paul as the projected winner for Iowa. Out of the 57 straw polls this year, Ron Paul has won 23 of them (40%), followed by Herman Cain, 17 (29%), Romney, 4 (7%) with Bachmann, Perry and Santorum tied for last amongst the current GOP contenders with 2 (3%).
