@timisgod13 You would need a distortion pedal for a heavy sound like the bands you mentioned, not an overdrive pedal IMO. However there is the possibility of using an OD pedal through the dirty channel of your amp or even a booster pedal. I'd recommend investing in a decent overdrive pedal if you have the money!
@thEyeojEEl Tom uses all sorts of pedals but for his live rigs he is not known for using OD pedals. His drive comes from the his 50 watt Marshall head unless something has changed in the last few years. here is a shot of his pedal board which usually stays the same. tiny (dot) cc (slash) tomsrig
Is it true that the Classic Overdrive also by MXR is basically this and the ZW-44? I heard there's a switch on the inside that switches between the two.
@whiteliongate I'd suggest just looking up "John fruscante rig" on google ( i know i spelled his name wrong. There's probably a list of his complete set up somewhere on line.
Oh yeah, when I hit the red channel or more drive channel on my Blues Deluxe Tube Amp, I turn the output knob on the MXR GTO pedal all the way up and the tone and gain knobs all the way down. Gearmandude has a really awesome Demo if this pedal too.
i have the proCo Rat, i use it as a base distortion. I want a pedal to get me a cool lead tone. which one of these would you choose to boost the Rat to a nice lead tone. MXR linedriver, Boss GE-7 Graphic Equalizer or a MXR GT-OD?
@Runelaier Boosting a distortion pedal is usually a bad idea. I'd get an EQ, place it after the Rat, and use it to get a volume boost and a way to shape the tone as well.
@gibsongod15 I like the MXR one, I got it for 30 dollars at GC, 4th of July sale, ends this Sunday. Although, an original or custom TubeScreamer would of course surpass the aforementioned
I have and old Digitech GNX1 I can't let go of I keep trying other stuff but to me nothing digital seems to hold up, tell me what you think. Thanks, Max
Do u think this could get a crispy Fair Warning or 1984 tone? The Hardwires come close. Im either gonna get this, the D3, or one of the Hardwires. Not sure yet.
my whole pedal board is mxr and i have both and love both of them, but i use them in totally different ways, i use the gt-od on my amps gain channel, just to kick it up a notch for solos, but i use the distortion 3 as my british high mid distortion on the clean channel
@29396 Def this. I hate my Dis III. It's weak. I use it on a Marshall JCM 2000 and it no very useful. It cant touch the crunch channel of the Mar. Also used it on my Line6 HD100 tube head it don't like it there either.
I own a RKII and why on God's green earth would you possibly need more gain than channels 3 & 4 provide in modern mode?!
Anyway, used as a clean boost (gain at or near 0, volume/level almost cranked, tone to taste), a tube screamer (I prefer a Maxon OD808) or similar pedal can add some excellent tonal dynamics and punch to both channels without turning them into a tsunami of muddy, over-gained n00b-ness.
is it worth getting this pedal if i already have an Ocd Version 4 and a ibanez ts-9 would it eat up my tone? right now im playing with a fender deville hot rod and a 2007 standard gibson les paul with a bigsby
Im thinkig what pedal I should buy from these : MXR Custom Shop GT-OD, MXR M173 Classic 108 Fuzz or Ibanez Tubeking? I mostly play, blues country, rock and hard rock? Any comments what is the best to these genres?
I have an Ibanez Tubeking (new red model) and it is mostly for metal. For what you're looking for I would go for the GT-OD or other similar Tubescreamer style pedal (I have a TS-9 myself.)
Heafy more than likely uses this pedal as a clean-boost (no overdrive tone coloring added) to make his guitar's signal hotter before his amplifier's preamp section. This causes his preamp's tubes (no doubt his preamp is already tweaked for a moderate-to-high gain sound) to overdrive/distort more than what his guitar can do alone. No doubt Heafy's amp is already a big and hairy beast. The pedal just makes the amp sound like an even bigger and hairier beast.
naw they use it as a base then layer usually a Peavey 6505+ through a marshall DSL and an Ibanez Tubescreamer to cut through for solos. It was on the Shogun DVD. They said they plug in an MXR GT-OD, Ibanez 808, and then amps, set everything at 50% except for volume and then play around with sound.
I have this pedal and it doesn't do well as a clean boost, it may work well as a saturated drive which is relatively 'transparent', but the point of the pedal is missed if only used gently. I use a ZVEX box of rock for a clean boost, the best pedal I have tried so far for pushing whatever else I have in my rig.
The video makes a point of the amount of clarity you can get from it, they use 6505's anyway so they'll be cranked with loads of gain already so clarity is a big deal. They use Marshall 1960BV, the exclusive vintage cabs that have great clarity too (Y)
Gain boost... ? By that you mean to add distortion to an already distorted signal? Because, in that case, yes.
Although not all can... If your looking to add gain to a tube amp's distortion, go for a solid-state overdrive... I have a really good Swell G-TOD tube overdrive that I tried that with, and it sounded like trash, though unparalleled on clean.
Anyway, if you're looking for one, tubescreamers are pretty much known as the "holy grail". Can't go wrong there.
You should work on technique first. Practice the pinchs nonstop. I practice my doing scales in pinchs. Amd move your picking hand around to see the change in the pinch. Unless you have no distortion or od, then it may not be needed.
Picked one of these up on eBay new for $60. Bad ass pedal. It really can go from mild boost all the way almost up to full distortion. Sounds like a Plexi being driven hard. In a pedal! Controlled feedback, even at low volume and gain, seems easy to manage. Seems like the pedal is bringing out a lot of cool overtones. I like it!
@CrystalsWildChild Could it be used on the low gain inputs of a Marshall tube head to be the actual overdrive sound instead of just a boost? Does it do the brown sound well?
hey there drmsgtrplayer, dude, it's an overdrive pedal right?? Try the crunch box that is the shit of distortion!! and the financial damage for it is not to bad.......
I recently checked out the super plextortion by wampler, it is a very good marshall crunch pedal, especially on the hi gain setting, and works great with complex chords aswell. It is twice as pricey as the crunchbox, but it sounds 10 times better.
