  • The difference between a mother and one not. She could have been raped or killed. Henry wouldn't have allowed it and that's why the father did it when he did. Rat! He was used to getting his way but I hope his reputation was shatted because of what he did to this innocent girl. He loved money. Not his children. He might have gotten away with it when he was young but his age makes the difference. No longer necessary to the military. His income would have been the thru the marriages of his kids.

  • her and her muslin XD

  • i like cathrien with her hair down more

  • 9:27 - Dang, and I thought my house was creepy.

  • Good grief! Catherine may be 17, but she has the disposition of the average 12 year old, sending her out to travel in the middle of the night- tons of possible things could've happened to her!D:

  • "and he understands muslin so well..." xD

  • This was such a good adaptation, up until Isabella Thorpe and Captain Tilney slept together. Why couldn't they keep up the excellence all the way through?

  • 3.49 isn't that the entrance to Jane Austens house in 'becoming Jane' 2007? Where she and Tom lefroy meet to elope? It looks exactly like it

  • "The worst crimes are the crimes of heart"! 9:00

    How true this is indeed!!!

  • LMAO at the lil girls "MR Tilney. NOWWW" lmao.

  • lol girls are funny and always thinking about how handsome someone is "was mr Tilney very handsome cathy".

  • they played i-spy!hahha.

  • Awkwardly takes a sip of...what is that anyways?

  • @GegoStuff .. Hee hee, if you mean Mr Tilney, it is cloudy lemonade... The 'olde fashioned way', without bubbles... My very best regards from Wales :0)x

  • "its a man on a white horse!!"

    @@" hahahahah

  • @gcatherinev i laughed my head off when they said that

  • @3:25 What the fuck is he eating!?

  • @heylittleluna it kind of looks like crab. thats my best guess :/

  • Mrs. Moreland is one of the only truly good, observant and caring mothers in any Austen novel. It's very refreshing.

  • @sarjo6 Very true. All the other good ones--such as Anne's mother in Persuasion--have already died by the time the story begins.

  • wow i can't believe she burned a book. when i get rid of books i take them to a trade store or to the local library so they can sell them..i can't burn one.

  • @bronteteri I've done it. It's not just unloading one of a book, but getting rid of everything the book stands for.

  • is there a part missing? Or am I slow?

  • i don't quite understand... why is catherine suddenly being thrown out?

  • @imova I don't understand either.

  • ... and Catherine is as you see her -- no harm done." The mother's sneaky matchmaking in this scene makes me laugh for some reason. :)

  • henry is so handsome and charming. what a real gentleman, we seriously need more of those nowadays

  • What the heck was that guy eating? And WHY ON EARTH would Catherine want some?!!! EWW!!

  • The mother is most forgiving but only because her daughter came home unhurt. Had Catherine been killed or molested, I wonder how she would have felt toward Henry then? Cath was just very lucky to have survived. It really was that dangerous for a young woman to travel by herself, especially at night. Shameful. Henry must have been so relieved to see that nothing had happened to her. He would have never forgiven himself had something happened to her weither it was his fault or not.

  • How old is Catherine supposed to be? Sorry, I've never read the book.

  • @canadarox14 - 17 years old throughout. She's 18 at the end.

  • @CeruleanFairy Thanks. That makes her obsession with her novels a bit more believable. She's still pretty much a kid after all.

  • @canadarox14 ^^ she does have a pretty active imagination, but she is supposed to be something of an anti-heroine and at the same time channel the parody of the gothic. Do read the book, if you can, it's good. m

  • @CeruleanFairy Thanks, I think I'll borrow it from a friend of mine. I really enjoyed this film version, and I think it's cool that the novel parodies the gothic. Jane Austen had quite the sense of humour, she parodies the picturesque, too.

  • If she ever gets off of the fact that "He understands muslin" I will be surprised indeed....

  • :,( Poor thing! "I DO love him!"

  • lesson of the story: gold diggers are creepy! lol.

  • My WORD, how many children ARE there in her family??

  • @AlinaTowers

There's ten, at least there should be, including her and James

  • Her brothers and sisters are soooo cuuuuuute!

  • Lol, Catherine's exasperated "NOW" at 8.00 makes me laugh

  • I'm not quite sure, but I think this might be the house where Jane and her family in Becoming Jane lived in. Especially the gate seems to be so very familiar ^^

  • Lol at the blank stare Tilney received from her siblings at 9:31.

  • Ya, i just really hope Mr T and Catherine fall in love.

  • emotional vampires...

  • "Mr. Tilney"

  • Is that the same house they used as Jane Austen's family home in Becoming Jane?

  • I hate the father. He was only after her to marry his son because he thought she was rich....he is as shallow as materialistic as Isabella.

  • @good4myears And he probably did kill his wife.

  • "The worst crimes are the crimes of the heart" - Henry is so wise. Wish I had his talent of judgement and I'm his age. Gosh, I want such husband. Even more then Darcy... Yes, I know, that's terrible. But what can I say, intelligence and sense of humour together always win my heart in the reality : )

  • @koniczynkaL Not terrible at all! Henry is my favourite Austen man as well. Darcy has his attractions, but I always found him way too stiff and serious. He's sexy - but what is sexiness without humor, and warmth, and shameless flirting? Hehe, I'll take Tilney over him any day! Shall we arm wrestle for him?

  • ROFL you made me laugh, thanks. Maybe we can share him together, you know, like in the Greek myth, he'll spend half of the year with you and the other half with me xD or maybe we should cloned him : P and you're so right, being a hottie means nothing when you have no wit or wisdom. Anyway, I agree, Henry is my favourite Austen hero too. Greetings.

  • @thefreeair Mr Dacry is way too prideful hence the title. give me funny mr tilney or kind mr knightly anyday!

  • @thefreeair I like Mr Knightley best!

  • @koniczynkaL Kon, it's not terrible. You have the right to your own opinion. Please don't forget that. It doesn't have to be formed around others. I've had a husband of 38 years who has a sense of humor and is intelligent. I don't think I'm that pretty but he does, thank the heavens! I feel more beautiful because of him. You've got to be who you are and accept that.It might be a puzzle now but that will change. Don't form yourself around another person. Ur pretty because U believe it. :)

  • @Songsmirth Aww, thank you for your lovely comment. I will try my best. Merry Christmas to you and your husband : )

  • @koniczynkaL Thank you Konic. To you and yours too, Merry day. Songs

  • 3:47

Is that the same 'opening' that was used in Becoming Jane???

  • lol The father must have something stuck up his ass to send her like that in the middle of the night..But Henry's sister is adorable!

  • what did Cathy do to Mr Tilney?

  • what was the game after I spy?

  • @Lilithly ok it´s sharads (or however u spell it), i got it^^

  • @Lilithly It's Charades. They pronounced things differently than we do today. Hope that helps. :)

  • 3:45

the gates in the movie becoming jane when jane and laFroy elope

  • Catherine has a love full familey. =)

  • this story has always made me so sad...to see innocence lost and taken advantage of..

  • Oh, how exciting! One of Catherine´s sisters is an American!

  • I'm not sure about the burning of that book.

  • @gringotts98 She's burning it because she thinks it gave her silly ideas (i.e. snooping in Mrs. Tinley's bedroom) :)

  • Why?

  • I would be a real loser at attracting a husband at this time. In heels, I'm almost as tall as Mr. Tilney. And, no cosmetics? Forget it!

  • perfect skin's everything oO

  • In reading the book and watching this, I am always most distressed at the absolute lack of power women have. I'm sure Austen meant to make it clear.

  • I think at 3:48 the gate there is the same in "Becoming Jane".

  • this movie does of no justice to the book

  • um...can someone explain im kindof lost why did she have to go back????

  • I think Catherine was only invited to Northanger abbey, because Mr. Thorpe told Mr. Tilneys father that she is very rich (and she isn´t).

  • the father called her an adventuress.... when he was the one who assumed she had money.....LOL

  • @ciquala And he was the one who married for money so he assumed that all people were as evil as he is. To turn a girl out like shows he has no morals at all. And the sister knows how deadly this could be for Isabella, physically but she can't do anything but give her money. Had she gone with Isabella, her father would have thrown her out. It must have been agony for her knowing how her brother cared. Her father was in his lawful right to lock her up. Children were owned according to the law.

  • @ciquala The general was the adventurer and he was angry at himself to be taken in. So he thought. She could have been killed and he didn't care. Henry and Elinore must have been confused. Mrs. Tilney's world must have imploded when she found out he'd married her for her $. How would we deal with that? A lot of these women died young. I think they just gave up on life. I also think a lot of them used sickness to get their husband's attention but it backfired on them.

  • that man is a disgrace

  • i love cathy's mom

  • She was kicked out because the father found out that she was not rich

  • so cute at 7:38

  • Does anyone know why she had to leave?

  • Catherine has a wonderful family.

The young ones looking so serious at Henry is funny.

  • am i the only one who thinks it is interesting that mr. tilney rides up on the cliche white horse? (not that there is anything wrong with that of course)

  • It's so cute when Catherine tells her sister "Now~!" when Mr. Tilney arrives... Just the facial expression on her face makes me smile :-)

  • the father is an ass

  • he is a big ass

  • Yes, the father is such a rude brute.

He's a bully even to his children.

I guess that's why during the first few scenes in their meeting, Eleanor & Henry seemed surprised & kind of had a disturbed look on their face that their father should be so attentive to Catherine when he hardly knows her.

  • NoAngel1959 its Mr tilney not tilly lol (hes so cute though )

the book is sooo much better than the film i recommend to anyone that likes the film to read the book xxxxx

  • Ok, I am not the only one who thinks Catherine is a scatter brain.

  • The father is such a jerk.... how could he have ever raised children as good as Henry and Eleanor? Their mother must be a very kind woman....

  • Now Catherine needs not to imagine her gothic nightmares any more: she's in one! :-)

  • it looks to me that money is more important to some than the manners....

  • Catherine looks somewhat like a Freddie Mercury's daughter. And Mr. Tilly looks a bit like the young prince Charles only Tilly is handsomer. ha ha...

  • I think the actress playing Catherine should get orthodonic work done on her overbite. You can tell I am an American, LOL!

  • i would be scared to death if i was catherine

  • All those brothers and sisters are so gorgeous.

  • what a jerk the dad is!

  • OMG, the father is a nasty piece of work.
