The difference between a mother and one not. She could have been raped or killed. Henry wouldn't have allowed it and that's why the father did it when he did. Rat! He was used to getting his way but I hope his reputation was shatted because of what he did to this innocent girl. He loved money. Not his children. He might have gotten away with it when he was young but his age makes the difference. No longer necessary to the military. His income would have been the thru the marriages of his kids.
Good grief! Catherine may be 17, but she has the disposition of the average 12 year old, sending her out to travel in the middle of the night- tons of possible things could've happened to her!D:
This was such a good adaptation, up until Isabella Thorpe and Captain Tilney slept together. Why couldn't they keep up the excellence all the way through?
@GegoStuff .. Hee hee, if you mean Mr Tilney, it is cloudy lemonade... The 'olde fashioned way', without bubbles... My very best regards from Wales :0)x
wow i can't believe she burned a book. when i get rid of books i take them to a trade store or to the local library so they can sell them..i can't burn one.
The mother is most forgiving but only because her daughter came home unhurt. Had Catherine been killed or molested, I wonder how she would have felt toward Henry then? Cath was just very lucky to have survived. It really was that dangerous for a young woman to travel by herself, especially at night. Shameful. Henry must have been so relieved to see that nothing had happened to her. He would have never forgiven himself had something happened to her weither it was his fault or not.
@canadarox14 ^^ she does have a pretty active imagination, but she is supposed to be something of an anti-heroine and at the same time channel the parody of the gothic. Do read the book, if you can, it's good. m
@CeruleanFairy Thanks, I think I'll borrow it from a friend of mine. I really enjoyed this film version, and I think it's cool that the novel parodies the gothic. Jane Austen had quite the sense of humour, she parodies the picturesque, too.
I'm not quite sure, but I think this might be the house where Jane and her family in Becoming Jane lived in. Especially the gate seems to be so very familiar ^^
"The worst crimes are the crimes of the heart" - Henry is so wise. Wish I had his talent of judgement and I'm his age. Gosh, I want such husband. Even more then Darcy... Yes, I know, that's terrible. But what can I say, intelligence and sense of humour together always win my heart in the reality : )
@koniczynkaL Not terrible at all! Henry is my favourite Austen man as well. Darcy has his attractions, but I always found him way too stiff and serious. He's sexy - but what is sexiness without humor, and warmth, and shameless flirting? Hehe, I'll take Tilney over him any day! Shall we arm wrestle for him?
ROFL you made me laugh, thanks. Maybe we can share him together, you know, like in the Greek myth, he'll spend half of the year with you and the other half with me xD or maybe we should cloned him : P and you're so right, being a hottie means nothing when you have no wit or wisdom. Anyway, I agree, Henry is my favourite Austen hero too. Greetings.
@koniczynkaL Kon, it's not terrible. You have the right to your own opinion. Please don't forget that. It doesn't have to be formed around others. I've had a husband of 38 years who has a sense of humor and is intelligent. I don't think I'm that pretty but he does, thank the heavens! I feel more beautiful because of him. You've got to be who you are and accept that.It might be a puzzle now but that will change. Don't form yourself around another person. Ur pretty because U believe it. :)
@ciquala And he was the one who married for money so he assumed that all people were as evil as he is. To turn a girl out like shows he has no morals at all. And the sister knows how deadly this could be for Isabella, physically but she can't do anything but give her money. Had she gone with Isabella, her father would have thrown her out. It must have been agony for her knowing how her brother cared. Her father was in his lawful right to lock her up. Children were owned according to the law.
@ciquala The general was the adventurer and he was angry at himself to be taken in. So he thought. She could have been killed and he didn't care. Henry and Elinore must have been confused. Mrs. Tilney's world must have imploded when she found out he'd married her for her $. How would we deal with that? A lot of these women died young. I think they just gave up on life. I also think a lot of them used sickness to get their husband's attention but it backfired on them.
am i the only one who thinks it is interesting that mr. tilney rides up on the cliche white horse? (not that there is anything wrong with that of course)
I guess that's why during the first few scenes in their meeting, Eleanor & Henry seemed surprised & kind of had a disturbed look on their face that their father should be so attentive to Catherine when he hardly knows her.
I really loooooove those kids. :D
