I like Tarja... but I like Anette more. Nightwish is better off with her.

used to be fan, still am when listenin the old stuff. I gave anette a change but it doesnt fit not a one bit. Last drop was when I was on their concert and she started singin songs that are from Tarjas era that was a slap in the face. if she would have only played the new stuff I prob would be still hardcore fan. Nightwish music is still awesome now I just have to hear it instrumental still works thou.
It's funny how so many people are bitter toward Anette because she doesn't have the same kind of voice Tarja had but no one ever complained when Marco joined the group and added his vocals. He doesn't have an operatic voice himself. Tuomas chose to take the band in a different direction. If he had hired someone with an operatic voice, don't you think it would be disrespectful to Tarja's legacy with the band?
Well I prefer Tarja's voice because it's very powerful but NW are getting better and better with Anette. I love her voice too and nobody can compare them, because they are super different. But the singer that I absolutely love is Marco :D (NOT in a stalker way) Thanks for the video- it's very nice :)
I was in the Army and living in Germany when I discovered Nightwish it was 2001/2002 when I first heard them... I LOVED Tarja.. I was kinda sad when she left the band.. but they moved on and Annete is great.. I think that she brings a new dimension to the music. I like both.. I also think that the band is great on different levels with both of them.. I don't prefer one over the other but I think that Dark Passion Play was a masterpeice and I can not wait for the new album.
is like for example tuomas would have choosen selena gomez, would you still think the same?. FOR ME, her voice doesnt fit in NW. i still love some of their new songs, but i prefer old NW.
I've got friends who insult and hate Anette just for not being Tarja and they don't even try to give her a chance. When I first heard the band with Anette in it, I was suprised. I didn't liked her at all, just because she wasn't Tarja. But I gave her a chance and now I love her. She's a great person and awesome musician. And I still support and love Tarja. She's awesome!
But what's past it's past. It's Anette's Era now and I will support her and the band till the end :)
I totally agree with you, the past must stay the past and we must enjoy the present. Tarja end Anette haven't the same voice so it's different and great. I listen always their songs, i can't stop. It's not because Tarja was gone that we must be prejudiced against Anette. Like you said, it's a story between her and the band. Anette is a magnificent singer. The fans can dislike but it's not a reason to put unfriendly comments. For me, Nightwish stay the best band that I know. I love you Nightwish!
I agree. Nightwish is nightwish, whoever the singer. Tarja left and experiments her own ways and Anette had some experiences with other bands like Pain. That's artistic life! We just have to listen to the music and enjoy it. Whatever happens, I'm a Nightwish'S fan and a Tarja'S fan too.
I totally agree with the poster of this video... You have a point. If you are a nightwish fan you will support them no matter how much u like or don't like their decision... I know Tarja's voice made nightwish music different then Annette's but their both good and special in their own ways. So if you are a nightwish fan you will just accept the fact that Nightwish is now with Annette and give her a break. Go nightwish we love you! <3 well atleast I DO! :D
I agree with every word you said. I had lost faith in the Nightwish fan community because it just seems to be one big pile of overly opinionated people and people who just want to start fights over what is and always has been a brilliant band. Nightwish is NOT nothing without Tarja. People who say that get me so angry that often I reply on the contrary, "Tarja is nothing without Nightwish", which I don't think is fair, but I get so angry with these people. Tuomas is the genius behind this band.
Actually, I have never listened to Nightwish just because voice or music. I've listened to it because of the combination of the voice, music, lyrics and atmosphere. No, I don't hate Anette, I think her voice fits perfectly to the new music, but I also think that she cannot handle the old songs, especially from the earlier albums.

i like both anette and tarja.when anette came to bend she wasn't so good at live performances but a year after she was a lot better and the next year she was perfect.the way she sings ''ghost love score'' ''ever dream'' ''koulema tekee taiteilijan'' and much more older songs is absolutely amazingly brilliant!can't wait for imaginaerum ;-)!!!!!
I don't care if people say that im not a nightwish fan because I support anette. it is not supporting nightwish make you a fan. It is the way of mature thinking to the band, know their problems accept the problems, get inspired by their music you became more a fan. I dont care if im not a fan by listen their songs everyday, having some CD's and play their music everyday on keyboard, guitar and ocarina (realy sound good). I love nightwish in good times and bad times and im glad they keep up

You shared your thoughts very well + I'm in total agreement. I enjoyed NW with Tarja and I still enjoy NW with Anette. I do admit that Anette struggles with the older songs but I don't judge her for that coz she +Tarja have completely different vocal styles + I'm respectful that Anette has the courage to attempt them. I believe she is entitled to some time to adjust. She's fantastic on DPP, so I know she'll be perfect on Imaginaerum. My wish is for Anette to keep her dark hair for Nightwish.
I don't hate Anette; I rather like her! I just hate when she sings Tarja's songs, but I think the guys are to blame for that. lol In my opinion, I hope that one day, Tarja will come back to the band and maybe Tarja and Anette can do a duet together! :D I know I know, keep dreaming. lol ;D
I bought the book( which includes their history) and stated that they do not bother to find someone that looked like Tarja but have just a good voice and can meet their expectations! and in accordance with the above I believe that by choosing Anette they worked correctly! :D
Without Tarja, Nightwish is not the same for many fans. Changes happen, for better or worse, but it is rather arrogant to claim that we must still like or feel the same about Nightwish. NO, WE DON'T HAVE TO, BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE SAME ANYMORE.
We look back with feelings of nostalgia and sadness because it wasn't like the way it was before. For us, Tarja's existence was the "golden age of Nightwish."

I was a huge fan of them in 2005, just before they fired Tarja, and I said once that my biggest wish is to go to their concert. But they never came, and when I read that they are coming (finally, for the 1st time) to my country, but with Annette, that was like a slap in my face, because I don't like the new Nightwish. I don't like Tarja as a solo artist very much, but I will go to her gig.
What's wrong with being a Tarja Turunen fan? Tarja's voice was extremely unique amongst the scores of generic female metal-band vocalists. She was a classical trained singer and gave a resounding and amazing sound to an already good group. While Toumas is the mastermind behind the composition and lyrics, Tarja was their voice.
I, like many others, loved Nightwish primarily because of Tarja. She was the uniqueness that distinguished their work from the likes of After Forever or Within Temptation
@NorthernVictory There is nothing wrong of being a Tarja's fan, who made the video what says is that, if you only liked nw 'cause of Tarja is because you are her fan, not NW fan. Of course is not the same with Anette, she sings totally diferent, but I think is better a diferent singer and not a Tarja's copy. Anette gives a diferent good feeling to the songs, and she does her best as Tarja did and currently does her best also. they both are amazing women and singers.
There's only one point with that I disagree: I'd say that a true doesn't have to accept the band's choices if they are crap for him. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion and just you're a fan doesn't mean you're not allowed to an opinion for yourself. I consider myself being a real Nightwish fan and to be honest, I prefer Anette. But this doesn't mean I respect the way they kicked Tarja out. That was childish and cowardly. But I nevertheless love Nightwish!!
Liking Anette doesn't mean you're not a real fan, you're right on that point. But not to like her doesn't mean it either, I don't like Anette for some reasons, some of 'em are about her singing, and I'm a Tarjaholic, well, it doesn't mean I'm not a NW fan, I also got albums, with Tarja, unfortunately never saw 'em. But I love NW and will keep on it. I feel happy that they're happy. I just can't get when people think we're forced to like everything NW does to be real fan, it's just silly.

When I read Tuoma's open letter It got me thinking, I felt kind of let down ya know ? I had a bit less respect for Tarja, and I didn't like Anette at first, but as a person, she IS better than Tarja. You think NW couldn't get an opera singer ? But Tuomas said that he didn't want any cause Tarja was so good that nobody can replace her, they had over 2000 demos sent, and if they picked Anette, she's definitely not that lame. And in time, I learn to love the new NW it's like falling in love again.
Thanks for your video. I definitely like Nightwish A lot, and have 3 of there cd's one of course being DPP. When I first caught wind that Tarja left NW, I was bummed and sorta skeptical when I heard they had a new singer and new album coming out. After getting a copy and listening to it, I do like it and like Anette's singing although different from Tarja's but either way its still NW and they still rock my socks off.
I agree with you on every single statement you made. I've been supporting Nightwish since 2005 when I got round to know them. They've been my favourite band ever since. The news of Tarja leaving them was a great schock to me and I even had a few dreams about it xD But I consider myself a huge fan of Nightwish and I stayed with them. No matter what. And Anette? I agree with you. But I see two nightwish with Tarja and without Tarja... The old and the new nightwish... I prefer not to compare, are very differents ... I hear both and are good... Marco, Tuomas, Jukka and Emppu are happy with the new Nightwish I also.
Well.... basically you´re absolutely right. Let´s say: Nightwish with Tarja transported some "feelings" ( for me personally!!!) in their sounding, they don´t get the same way with Anette. But for Odin´s sake, who cares?

I agree with you. I prefer Tarja, but Anette is a great replacement for her. And I have excepted their choice after I saw them live with Anette. I still LOVE their music and their still my favorite band in the whole world. I can't wait for their new album.
As from my view, supporting Annette _makes_ you real fan.. Old Nightwish was different, if you hate the new style youre no fan at all since the music is exactly same due to Tuomas hasnt changed too much. I'm a new NW fan. I know them only for 4 mounts, its a shame I haven't known this amazing band before. BUT I feel like I have known and loved them all my life!
I used to dislike Anette, because of my passion for Tarjas voice. Now I know I was wrong, Anette is a wonderful singer. Two songs have changed my mind "The Poet And The Pendulum" and "Escapist". Both are sung by Anette and she does an amazing job with both.
Nightwish is still Nightwish, as long as Toumas writes the music.

It's not this same Nightwish, this band with Anette Olzon is playing like pop rock or something, in my opinion I don't think so now Nightwish is better then early, moreover I think that the best of melodic ghotic band was Nightwish with Tarja, now I like more Tarja solo albums, and its never mind that on her album music section is not that great like early wiht Nightwish, Tarja has something magic and special in her amazing voice :)

I agree with you on many things. Nightwish introduced me to symphonic music + metal and therefore I will always love them :) Though I admit I prefer their older era (Oceanborn, Wishmaster and Century Child) but that is just my taste ofc. I don't hate Anette and I like many songs on DPP however I think they appear to grow a little too poppish (Bye Bye Beautiful and the music video disappointed me) BUT I still hear the music and I will always buy their albums - Nightwish has a place in my heart :)
I agree with you! They're both great! I never had the chance to see Nightwish live with Tarja, but I have saw Nightwish with Anette 3 times already and they were all great :)
But I have also seen Tarja live with her solo album. I saw her 2 times, and both times i was nailed to the floor because of her very tallented singing! I would have loved to see the combination of the guys and the beautifull voice of tarja together in a live show, but that's not an option anymore. :(
To me, I preffered Tarja. No, I'm not one of those loonies who is all ANETTE SUCKS or anything, or TARJA COME BACK... because she's not coming back. She's happy, in fact, she has put out the two albums while NW has only put out the one so far. But as a NW fan, I have been to 2 concerts with Anette singing to support their choice. I don't much care for her vocals, but the lyrics are still genius and if Tuomas chose her, I suport his choice, right or wrong. That's just my opinion
Hi. I think that Nightwish saved me from bad music, songs are so true and meaningfull. I can't say wihch one is better Anette or Tarja, I like them both :) and i think that Nightwish is still Nightwish, is there Tarja or not. Nightwish is beautiful, strong, powerfull and mystic music. And Anette was really good choice, after Tarja and boys had 'a break up'. They didnt want to copy complietly what they have done before, and that shows respect for Tarjas work.

Not musically, not in my opinion. But its just a change in vocals. Thats what changed. I cant really understand why people cant accept anette. Okay, i saw her live with sleeping sun once...thats the only song i dont think she should sing, at all! But she is fine, she sings great and keeps Nightwish alive.

...Right....ok so I started collecting their albums and then went to see them at the Chicago House of Blues (this was in 2003? I think..) anyway it was awesome! That venue was perfect for them. I have continued to go to shows and have seen them with Annette 4 times. Although I would have liked for them to keep Tarja I am also just a big fan of their music overall. Annette has added a certain pop feel and has great stage presence. I continue to support Tarja also, her new album ROCKS! Thanks NW!!

I've been a Nightwish fan for many moons and I absolutely love both vocalists. Was I sad to see Tarja go? Of course! She was a great frontwoman...but I trust the guys and their decision to part ways with her and support their choice in vocalists. Nightwish, as with many bands, is constantly evolving, progressing and I'm happy to see them pushing forward!
i like old nighwish not for tarja, i like their symphonic power metal style, but now it is only symphonic metal, the last album i liked was century child, because it had a little of power. personally i like once but it is too commercial, and they lost the great style they had. i miss that style. i wish the new album to be power again.
I like the band. Idon't care who's the singer. Then was Tarja now Anette later maybe a singer that no many people will like. The point is that Nightwish is NOT going to split up no matter what. The lyrics might be borbit but yet deeper and the music wilder but it shows that they are in perfect harmony and that they share a very important thing their love for rock and their membership , the most important things that keep this immortal band toghether -NIGHTWISH- 4 EVER!
I think you're completely right, nightwish isn't only about Tarja or Anette. it's about five people who like making music and want to share that with the world. you have to listen to the complete song not only the vocals. and it's ok not to like all of their songs, that doesn't make you less a fan of nightwish.
there both good but groups change lineups all the time and no one says anything I mean Evanescence has changed there lineup so many times and people never noticed because all Evanescence is Amy Lee there are more people in the band then Amy Lee.I love both Tarja and Anette.

vocalist wanst right. i dont have a problem of chainging their sound (thats what they actually did...small chainges but noticeable)my problem is that Nightwish (tuomas actually) is the band that "invented" this type of music (mixing classical opera with epic metal) and once its the 1st band to do this i believe they should use an other more "opera style" vocalist. The voice of anette is just great but not for this band (although i like a lot of songs where she sings with the best being amaranth)
Hi...im a keyboard player and nightwish is the band that made me love and play the specific type of music (once nightwish is a symphonic metal band). I like every single song of them and i always support their decisions. My only problem is tha Anette hasn't the voice for the specific type of music. Her voice is more for rock - pop songs rather than this symphonic stuff. I m sure the band had very good reasons to stop the cooperation with Tarja but i believe that picking anette as their lead

Do you really have to own merch and CDs, or a liveexperience, to be a real fan? 'Cause then I ain't. A real fan doesn't have to buy anything. A real fan just shows them love. People who defines a real fan as someone who goes to their concert, owns merch/CDs is completely ridiculous.
I totally agree with the entire video...it's a little unfair that if you see other rock bands, they switch guitarists or drummers all the time, but if a band switches lead singer....it's a whole drama scene TT I like both Tarja and Anette, and I LOVE NIGHTWISH go favourite band!! XD

And one last point. There is a way of preventing these "hates". And no, that's not bringing Tarja back(although that might work too) but for Nightwish to maintain Anette as their vocalist and just change their name. Nightwish should stop pretending to be Nightwish. They have already lost their origin.
And I think what really upsets Tarja's fans are(as we can all guessed it) that Anette is simply butchering Tarja's contribution with her unmatchable vocal. Not only that she's even acting quite stupid on stage and the way she dressed doesn't really fit in. While Tarja makes Nightwish looks like divine marriage between metal and opera as well as art and class, Anette makes Nightwish looks like mediocre rock band with a femal vocal. These days that's nothing unique.
Not to mention "Dark Passion Play" was mediocre album with lack of inspiration and I am not simply blaming on Anette for this. I think what happened is that Tuomas was working with Tarja for last five albums that suited Tarja's vocal and for him to make musical adjustment for Anette was something that he wasn't musically prepared for. And it is true that he might eventually improve but that would only mean to radically shift from Nightwish's identity like Savatage have done.
I think I speak for many Tarja's fans and that is it's not simply about termination of Tarja that I can't accept but it is that Tarja wasn't replaced for relatively equal candidate. It is quite disturbing that they fired Tarja for THAT! On their April Fool's joke, they said they replaced Tarja for Sarah Brightman. That replacement is something to swallow and even look forward to. At least then Nightwish would have a new vocalist with same league but still different in her own right.
I personally was willing to get over it and embrace Nightwish as long as they can find a new vocalist who is at least in similar league with Tarja and continue creating great music and at same time still be able to play old song without ruining it and even making some different interpretation. This basically mean one, a female vocalist and two, somebody who is similarly trained in operatic style but yet still different from Tarja in different respect. Anette is horrible candidacy.
What Nightwish have done is they took a vocalist who is one of kind, very divine and classically trained artist who have been with Nightwish since their first album and her voice was undeniably crucial element of Nightwish's music and their artistic and conceptual identity and replaced her with Anette, who is undeniably a good singer but no way near unique and majestic as Tarja. As much as I was disappointed about termination of Tarja, it's not really Nightwish without Tarja that I dislike.
Let me put it this way. David Lee Roth is unique in his own way compare to Rob Halford. However it's completely different story if David Lee Roth replace Halford as a new vocalist for Judas Priest. It is undeniable that K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton have played major role of creating Priest's music beside Halford, however, that's not going to change anything significantly if David Lee Roth is singing for Priest. The role of vocalist in music and in band is very important.
I think there is major confusion here between being a fan of "Nightwish" and being a fan of Nightwish's "music". And it's not even about whether one is "real fan" because they embrace Tarja over Anette or embracing Nightwish regardless of their decision. It is about being a fan of their music. And as much as you are right that Nightwish is five pieces band and it was never about Tarja alone, their replacement of vocalist to Anette have once again shown how important vocalist is in music.
Like i have said before; There are 3 types of people who wacth the vids and may comment. Tarja fans, Anette fans, and Nightwish fans. Im proud to be a Nightwish fan.
Also its good to see that there are people saying the same stuff iv been writing in the comment boards. Personally i like more songs with Tarja than with Anette, but remember that there are alot more "old songs" than "new songs". All in all a great band with a great sound.
I did not agree with one thing. People that say that this is not Nightwish anymore have some point. You say that Nightwish was 5 people not only Tarja, but without Tarja is not that 5 people so it is not whole Nightwish, so its new, diffrent Nightwish. At the end i like to say that i dont understand ppl insulting Anette, its not her fault, and she is really good singer but she singing diffrent that Tarja and have diffrent voice. more rock than classic that I personally prefer,btw love Tarja :P
i love nightwish becuse the music and the sound comes directly from their hearts, tarja got fired becuse she lost that feeling :(partly, dont get me wrong) both tarja and anette are skilled singers. Nightwish changed when anette came but its still nightwish and the music still speaks to me. when people say that they hate anette, dont they say i hate nightwish at the same time? it was their choise to pick anette and it was the right thing to do, they have my love

I think the main reason people dislike Annette is they don't like the way she sings the old songs that were originaly sung by Tarja. I understand that when people go to a nightwish concert tey want to hear some classic songs as well as new material, but Annete's voice doesn't suit them. I don't hate Annette. Although, like most people, I will always prefer Tarja, Annette is a good singer and worthy member of such an incredible lineup as nightwish. And she doesn't deserve the hate.
True, people can recongize Nightwish by Tarja's voice, many like it that way. I like both and I think it is pretty amazing what Nightwish as done with such cripleing blow to the band. I have to say that I agree with you in this vid. I have been listening to Nightwish for many years now both old (Tarja) and new (Anette) and I have to say that I love them both for their singing and I think they have both done a fantastic job with the band. To me Nightwish is a band made up of everyone in the band not just a singer with a backing group. I don't just listen for the singer I also listen to the wonderful music that is written and performed by the band.

I personally prefer the old fast, acelerated style. i think anette is an excelent singer but not for nightwish, i think toumas chose someone totally oposite because he or they was/were angry, i think anette has an oposite personality of tarja, anette is smilig always and seems more sociable. when did you see tarja joking in the stage. a think both tarja and nightwish are a little angry.

Everyone clearly needs to calm down about Tarja. I prefer her voice over Annette's, but they're both beautiful, and I'm glad Nightwish mixed it up. It would have been so boring if they'd hired a new singer who sounded exactly like Tarja. And Tuomas is 95% of Nightwish. Every once in a while, Marco or Emppu will contribute. Tarja and Annette haven't composed a note or written a word. They just sing. It shouldn't make that much of a difference.
okay, maybe if I share this thought about Nightwish (BTW, I first heard of Nightwish like... 2007~2008). But seriously, I must agree with uh... majority of what you had mentioned here. Regardless of old fan or new fan, it is the MUSIC AND THE VOCALS, NOT JUST the VOCALS which makes the difference. I know that some fans will disagree with me, but, Tarja and Anette are almost, or NEARLY the same, they can create the SAME impact to a song despite being 2 different people. (BTW, NW ish awesome! :D)
many good points about nightwish on this video but i must say that i like anette alot and better with each year that passes and i think also that shes fith better in duett with marco than tarja did and many other things makes she fith better in nightwish than tarja did !

As long as they keep putting out great music (Which Dark Passion Play was a great album) then I will continue to be a fan. Besides as much as I like Tarja, her solo syuff is meh. I was into Nightwish for the music more than the vocals anyways.
I like Tarja better but I dont dislike anette. I still support the band's decisions and like anette's sining but it is in fact NOT the same nightwish. Yes tarja was only 1/5 of the band but vocals are a dominant aspect of their music. Small changes can have big effects. For example, what would water be without hydrogen? just "O".

at first it was hard for me to accept anette, but...then i realized that she was a cool singer too... it's hard to compare voices...since every voice is different...some song are more suitable for tarja... some sngs are more suitable for anette...that's a fact... but both of them are great singers... besides toumas stils makes wonderful music!! i love nightwish with tarja, anette or marco....or simply with any vocals ...they are great :)
I liked night wish with Tarja, but I like it with Anette to, like many have said there both good singer but with different sounds. However nightwish live with Tarja left a little something to be desired, with Anette they were one of the better live shows I have seen. That said, I would be happy if nightwish dropped the female live singer and just had Marco singing all there stuff but I don't think Tarot would be happy. Marcos voice is sexy and mixes well with the sound especially the new stuff.
As a long time Nightwish fan, I would say both singers have their pros and cons about them. Tarja had a very powerful voice that would capture the very spirit of one's body when you would listen to here. Due to her operatic style though, there are songs it seems she has trouble keeping tempo. Anette is a bit more poppy with a "been there done that" kind of voice, but her range allows here to keep tempo easily. Overall, Nightwish is still Nightwish but they lost a very defining element with Tarja
When Tarja was lead, you knew Nightwish when they came on the radio. Hearing that powerful, operatic voice in the midst of symphonic metal defined the very essence of their sound and what made them unique. Without Tarja, there is very little separating their sound from other bands these days. They are still my favorite band, without a doubt. They kick too much @ss not to be. But without Tarja, their sound just is not as unique as it once was.
I agree with you 100 % Nightwish is still awesome and probably musically the best band on earth with or without Tarja!
But Nightwish also lost what made them stand out from others, their uniqueness when Tarja was fired, like you said, when people head the name Nightwish they instantly thought of the band mixing Opera-classical vocals, weather if their opinions were good or bad they always thought the band was special.Today they see them as any other band..I still love them but mis the uniqueness
PS: We dont hate Anette we just think she aint and never going to be Tarja or get close to her (voice/talent-wise) whatsoever.That and the fact that she tries to sing old songs which definitely dont suit her
Plus the songs written from now on are different cause they need to meet the requirements of Anette's voice so its inevitable for NW to change their music(comparing to the old songs) so yeah NW are different band now and practically that means OLD NW dont exist without Tarja.
To be honest someone can understand a singer's quality by the way they actually sing on live concerts.Having heard how Anette sings live id rather not hear any other live concerts of NW. Well i am NW fan but not with this singer and the reason is that Tuomas may be, indeed ,writing most of the songs etc etc but its Tarja that delivers them to our ears so that makes her atleast half the NW i know.

I have personally encountered the entity described by Tarja Turunen in Track 11 of "My Winter Storm", "Ciaran's Well" and search for _that_ voice in the music that I listen to, whether it's Anette, Tarja, Elisha Jordon or Gary Moore who's singing. (Elisha Jordon=Nemo cover; Gary Moore=Over The Hills original.)
I have heard Nightwish since my childhood, I can tell you that's what attracted me to them, I always told myself, the singer's voice is beautiful and the lyrics are so poetic by Tuomas, was sad dismissal turunen , and if something like this for me, was really sad.

used to be fan, still am when listenin the old stuff. I gave anette a change but it doesnt fit not a one bit. Last drop was when I was on their concert and she started singin songs that are from Tarjas era that was a slap in the face. if she would have only played the new stuff I prob would be still hardcore fan. Nightwish music is still awesome now I just have to hear it instrumental still works thou.

It's funny how so many people are bitter toward Anette because she doesn't have the same kind of voice Tarja had but no one ever complained when Marco joined the group and added his vocals. He doesn't have an operatic voice himself. Tuomas chose to take the band in a different direction. If he had hired someone with an operatic voice, don't you think it would be disrespectful to Tarja's legacy with the band?

Well I prefer Tarja's voice because it's very powerful but NW are getting better and better with Anette. I love her voice too and nobody can compare them, because they are super different. I was in the Army and living in Germany when I discovered Nightwish it was 2001/2002 when I first heard them... I LOVED Tarja.. I was kinda sad when she left the band.. but they moved on and Annete is great.. I think that she brings a new dimension to the music. I like both.. I also think that the band is great on different levels with both of them.. I don't prefer one over the other but I think that Dark Passion Play was a masterpeice and I can not wait for the new album.

I've got friends who insult and hate Anette just for not being Tarja and they don't even try to give her a chance. When I first heard the band with Anette in it, I was suprised. I didn't liked her at all, just because she wasn't Tarja. But I gave her a chance and now I love her. She's a great person and awesome musician. And I still support and love Tarja. She's awesome!
But what's past it's past. It's Anette's Era now and I will support her and the band till the end :)

I totally agree with you, the past must stay the past and we must enjoy the present. Tarja end Anette haven't the same voice so it's different and great. I listen always their songs, i can't stop. It's not because Tarja was gone that we must be prejudiced against Anette. Like you said, it's a story between her and the band. Anette is a magnificent singer. The fans can dislike but it's not a reason to put unfriendly comments. For me, Nightwish stay the best band that I know. I love you Nightwish!

I had lost faith in the Nightwish fan community because it just seems to be one big pile of overly opinionated people and people who just want to start fights over what is and always has been a brilliant band. Nightwish is NOT nothing without Tarja. People who say that get me so angry that often I reply on the contrary, "Tarja is nothing without Nightwish", which I don't think is fair, but I get so angry with these people. Tuomas is the genius behind this band.

Actually, I have never listened to Nightwish just because voice or music. I've listened to it because of the combination of the voice, music, lyrics and atmosphere. No, I don't hate Anette, I think her voice fits perfectly to the new music, but I also think that she cannot handle the old songs, especially from the earlier albums.

I do admit that Anette struggles with the older songs but I don't judge her for that coz she +Tarja have completely different vocal styles + I'm respectful that Anette has the courage to attempt them. I believe she is entitled to some time to adjust. She's fantastic on DPP, so I know she'll be perfect on Imaginaerum. My wish is for Anette to keep her dark hair for Nightwish.

Without Tarja, Nightwish is not the same for many fans. Changes happen, for better or worse, but it is rather arrogant to claim that we must still like or feel the same about Nightwish. NO, WE DON'T HAVE TO, BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE SAME ANYMORE.
We look back with feelings of nostalgia and sadness because it wasn't like the way it was before. For us, Tarja's existence was the "golden age of Nightwish."

I was a huge fan of them in 2005, just before they fired Tarja, and I said once that my biggest wish is to go to their concert. But they never came, and when I read that they are coming (finally, for the 1st time) to my country, but with Annette, that was like a slap in my face, because I don't like the new Nightwish. I don't like Tarja as a solo artist very much, but I will go to her gig.

What's wrong with being a Tarja Turunen fan? Tarja's voice was extremely unique amongst the scores of generic female metal-band vocalists. She was a classical trained singer and gave a resounding and amazing sound to an already good group. While Toumas is the mastermind behind the composition and lyrics, Tarja was their voice.
I, like many others, loved Nightwish primarily because of Tarja. She was the uniqueness that distinguished their work from the likes of After Forever or Within Temptation

Of course is not the same with Anette, she sings totally diferent, but I think is better a diferent singer and not a Tarja's copy. There's only one point with that I disagree: I'd say that a true doesn't have to accept the band's choices if they are crap for him. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion and just you're a fan doesn't mean you're not allowed to an opinion for yourself. I consider myself being a real Nightwish fan and to be honest, I prefer Anette. But this doesn't mean I respect the way they kicked Tarja out. That was childish and cowardly. Liking Anette doesn't mean you're not a real fan, you're right on that point. But not to like her doesn't mean it either, I don't like Anette for some reasons, some of 'em are about her singing, and I'm a Tarjaholic, well, it doesn't mean I'm not a NW fan, I also got albums, with Tarja, unfortunately never saw 'em. But I love NW and will keep on it. I feel happy that they're happy. I just can't get when people think we're forced to like everything NW does to be real fan, it's just silly.

When I read Tuoma's open letter It got me thinking, I felt kind of let down ya know ? I had a bit less respect for Tarja, and I didn't like Anette at first, but as a person, she IS better than Tarja. You think NW couldn't get an opera singer ? But Tuomas said that he didn't want any cause Tarja was so good that nobody can replace her, they had over 2000 demos sent, and if they picked Anette, she's definitely not that lame. And in time, I learn to love the new NW it's like falling in love again.

When I first caught wind that Tarja left NW, I was bummed and sorta skeptical when I heard they had a new singer and new album coming out. After getting a copy and listening to it, I do like it and like Anette's singing although different from Tarja's but either way its still NW and they still rock my socks off.

I agree with you on every single statement you made. I've been supporting Nightwish since 2005 when I got round to know them. They've been my favourite band ever since. The news of Tarja leaving them was a great schock to me and I even had a few dreams about it xD But I consider myself a huge fan of Nightwish and I stayed with them. No matter what. And Anette? As from my view, supporting Annette _makes_ you real fan.. Old Nightwish was different, if you hate the new style youre no fan at all since the music is exactly same due to Tuomas hasnt changed too much. So if you say old/new isnt Nightwish I will say just please shovel your attitude your ass. Do you guys really hate food if market sells them in different location than before?

I'm a new NW fan. I know them only for 4 mounts, its a shame I haven't known this amazing band before. BUT I feel like I have known and loved them all my life!
I used to dislike Anette, because of my passion for Tarjas voice. Now I know I was wrong, Anette is a wonderful singer. Two songs have changed my mind "The Poet And The Pendulum" and "Escapist". Both are sung by Anette and she does an amazing job with both.
Nightwish is still Nightwish, as long as Toumas writes the music.

I agree with you on many things. Nightwish introduced me to symphonic music + metal and therefore I will always love them :) Though I admit I prefer their older era (Oceanborn, Wishmaster and Century Child) but that is just my taste ofc. I don't hate Anette and I like many songs on DPP however I think they appear to grow a little too poppish (Bye Bye Beautiful and the music video disappointed me) BUT I still hear the music and I will always buy their albums - Nightwish has a place in my heart :)

I agree with you! They're both great! I never had the chance to see Nightwish live with Tarja, but I have saw Nightwish with Anette 3 times already and they were all great :)
But I have also seen Tarja live with her solo album. I saw her 2 times, and both times i was nailed to the floor because of her very tallented singing! I would have loved to see the combination of the guys and the beautifull voice of tarja together in a live show, but that's not an option anymore. :(

To me, I preffered Tarja. No, I'm not one of those loonies who is all ANETTE SUCKS or anything, or TARJA COME BACK... because she's not coming back. She's happy, in fact, she has put out the two albums while NW has only put out the one so far. But as a NW fan, I have been to 2 concerts with Anette singing to support their choice. I don't much care for her vocals, but the lyrics are still genius and if Tuomas chose her, I suport his choice, right or wrong. That's just my opinion

Hi. I think that Nightwish saved me from bad music, songs are so true and meaningfull. I can't say wihch one is better Anette or Tarja, I like them both :) and i think that Nightwish is still Nightwish, is there Tarja or not. Nightwish is beautiful, strong, powerfull and mystic music. And Anette was really good choice, after Tarja and boys had 'a break up'. They didnt want to copy complietly what they have done before, and that shows respect for Tarjas work.

Okay, i agree with everything you say in your video. Greeat, i dont need to do one myself since we share the same opinion =), no but... I think that Nightwish changed with Anette. Not musically, not in my opinion. But its just a change in vocals. Thats what changed. I cant really understand why people cant accept anette. Okay, i saw her live with sleeping sun once...thats the only song i dont think she should sing, at all! But she is fine, she sings great and keeps Nightwish alive.

...Right....ok so I started collecting their albums and then went to see them at the Chicago House of Blues (this was in 2003? I think..) anyway it was awesome! That venue was perfect for them. I have continued to go to shows and have seen them with Annette 4 times. Although I would have liked for them to keep Tarja I am also just a big fan of their music overall. Annette has added a certain pop feel and has great stage presence. I continue to support Tarja also, her new album ROCKS! Thanks NW!!

I've been a Nightwish fan for many moons and I absolutely love both vocalists. Was I sad to see Tarja go? Of course! She was a great frontwoman...but I trust the guys and their decision to part ways with her and support their choice in vocalists. Nightwish, as with many bands, is constantly evolving, progressing and I'm happy to see them pushing forward!

i like old nighwish not for tarja, i like their symphonic power metal style, but now it is only symphonic metal, the last album i liked was century child, because it had a little of power. personally i like once but it is too commercial, and they lost the great style they had. i miss that style. i wish the new album to be power again.

I like the band. Idon't care who's the singer. Then was Tarja now Anette later maybe a singer that no many people will like. The point is that Nightwish is NOT going to split up no matter what. vocalist wanst right. i dont have a problem of chainging their sound (thats what they actually did...small chainges but noticeable)my problem is that Nightwish (tuomas actually) is the band that "invented" this type of music (mixing classical opera with epic metal) and once its the 1st band to do this i believe they should use an other more "opera style" vocalist. The voice of anette is just great but not for this band (although i like a lot of songs where she sings with the best being amaranth)

Hi...im a keyboard player and nightwish is the band that made me love and play the specific type of music (once nightwish is a symphonic metal band). I like every single song of them and i always support their decisions. My only problem is tha Anette hasn't the voice for the specific type of music. Her voice is more for rock - pop songs rather than this symphonic stuff. I m sure the band had very good reasons to stop the cooperation with Tarja but i believe that picking anette as their lead

And one last point. There is a way of preventing these "hates". And no, that's not bringing Tarja back(although that might work too) but for Nightwish to maintain Anette as their vocalist and just change their name. Nightwish should stop pretending to be Nightwish. They have already lost their origin.

And I think what really upsets Tarja's fans are(as we can all guessed it) that Anette is simply butchering Tarja's contribution with her unmatchable vocal. Not only that she's even acting quite stupid on stage and the way she dressed doesn't really fit in. While Tarja makes Nightwish looks like divine marriage between metal and opera as well as art and class, Anette makes Nightwish looks like mediocre rock band with a femal vocal. These days that's nothing unique.

Not to mention "Dark Passion Play" was mediocre album with lack of inspiration and I am not simply blaming on Anette for this. I think what happened is that Tuomas was working with Tarja for last five albums that suited Tarja's vocal and for him to make musical adjustment for Anette was something that he wasn't musically prepared for. And it is true that he might eventually improve but that would only mean to radically shift from Nightwish's identity like Savatage have done.

I think I speak for many Tarja's fans and that is it's not simply about termination of Tarja that I can't accept but it is that Tarja wasn't replaced for relatively equal candidate. It is quite disturbing that they fired Tarja for THAT! On their April Fool's joke, they said they replaced Tarja for Sarah Brightman. That replacement is something to swallow and even look forward to. At least then Nightwish would have a new vocalist with same league but still different in her own right.

I personally was willing to get over it and embrace Nightwish as long as they can find a new vocalist who is at least in similar league with Tarja and continue creating great music and at same time still be able to play old song without ruining it and even making some different interpretation. This basically mean one, a female vocalist and two, somebody who is similarly trained in operatic style but yet still different from Tarja in different respect. Anette is horrible candidacy.

What Nightwish have done is they took a vocalist who is one of kind, very divine and classically trained artist who have been with Nightwish since their first album and her voice was undeniably crucial element of Nightwish's music and their artistic and conceptual identity and replaced her with Anette, who is undeniably a good singer but no way near unique and majestic as Tarja. As much as I was disappointed about termination of Tarja, it's not really Nightwish without Tarja that I dislike.

Let me put it this way. David Lee Roth is unique in his own way compare to Rob Halford. However it's completely different story if David Lee Roth replace Halford as a new vocalist for Judas Priest. It is undeniable that K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton have played major role of creating Priest's music beside Halford, however, that's not going to change anything significantly if David Lee Roth is singing for Priest. The role of vocalist in music and in band is very important.

I think there is major confusion here between being a fan of "Nightwish" and being a fan of Nightwish's "music". And it's not even about whether one is "real fan" because they embrace Tarja over Anette or embracing Nightwish regardless of their decision. It is about being a fan of their music. And as much as you are right that Nightwish is five pieces band and it was never about Tarja alone, their replacement of vocalist to Anette have once again shown how important vocalist is in music.

Like i have said before; There are 3 types of people who wacth the vids and may comment. Tarja fans, Anette fans, and Nightwish fans. Im proud to be a Nightwish fan.
Also its good to see that there are people saying the same stuff iv been writing in the comment boards. Personally i like more songs with Tarja than with Anette, but remember that there are alot more "old songs" than "new songs". All in all a great band with a great sound.

You say that Nightwish was 5 people not only Tarja, but without Tarja is not that 5 people so it is not whole Nightwish, so its new, diffrent Nightwish. I think the main reason people dislike Annette is they don't like the way she sings the old songs that were originaly sung by Tarja. I understand that when people go to a nightwish concert tey want to hear some classic songs as well as new material, but Annete's voice doesn't suit them. I don't hate Annette. Although, like most people, I will always prefer Tarja, Annette is a good singer and worthy member of such an incredible lineup as nightwish. And she doesn't deserve the hate.

I have to say that I agree with you in this vid. I have been listening to Nightwish for many years now both old (Tarja) and new (Anette) and I have to say that I love them both for their singing and I think they have both done a fantastic job with the band. To me Nightwish is a band made up of everyone in the band not just a singer with a backing group. I don't just listen for the singer I also listen to the wonderful music that is written and performed by the band.

I personally prefer the old fast, acelerated style. i think anette is an excelent singer but not for nightwish, i think toumas chose someone totally oposite because he or they was/were angry, i think anette has an oposite personality of tarja, anette is smilig always and seems more sociable. when did you see tarja joking in the stage. a think both tarja and nightwish are a little angry.

Everyone clearly needs to calm down about Tarja. I prefer her voice over Annette's, but they're both beautiful, and I'm glad Nightwish mixed it up. It would have been so boring if they'd hired a new singer who sounded exactly like Tarja. And Tuomas is 95% of Nightwish. Every once in a while, Marco or Emppu will contribute. Tarja and Annette haven't composed a note or written a word. They just sing. It shouldn't make that much of a difference.

okay, maybe if I share this thought about Nightwish (BTW, I first heard of Nightwish like... 2007~2008). But seriously, I must agree with uh... majority of what you had mentioned here. Regardless of old fan or new fan, it is the MUSIC AND THE VOCALS, NOT JUST the VOCALS which makes the difference. I know that some fans will disagree with me, but, Tarja and Anette are almost, or NEARLY the same, they can create the SAME impact to a song despite being 2 different people. (BTW, NW ish awesome! :D)

I like Tarja better but I dont dislike anette. I still support the band's decisions and like anette's sining but it is in fact NOT the same nightwish. Yes tarja was only 1/5 of the band but vocals are a dominant aspect of their music. Small changes can have big effects. For example, what would water be without hydrogen? just "O".

i absolutely agree with you. i love Nightwish, through and through, mainly Tuomas fan, but Nightwish nonetheless. i think people should just learn to deal with the fact that it was the band's decision for Tarja's dismissal. its not Anette's fault. thank you so much for this Video, Last of the Wilds is one my favorite songs btw, so good choice there. i hope everyone will see reason and just let Nightwish thrive as Nightwish! they are an awesome band, no matter who their lead singer is.

at first it was hard for me to accept anette, but...then i realized that she was a cool singer too... it's hard to compare voices...since every voice is different...some song are more suitable for tarja... some sngs are more suitable for anette...that's a fact... but both of them are great singers... besides toumas stils makes wonderful music!! i love nightwish with tarja, anette or marco....or simply with any vocals ...they are great :)

I liked night wish with Tarja, but I like it with Anette to, like many have said there both good singer but with different sounds. However nightwish live with Tarja left a little something to be desired, with Anette they were one of the better live shows I have seen. That said, I would be happy if nightwish dropped the female live singer and just had Marco singing all there stuff but I don't think Tarot would be happy. Marcos voice is sexy and mixes well with the sound especially the new stuff.

As a long time Nightwish fan, I would say both singers have their pros and cons about them. Tarja had a very powerful voice that would capture the very spirit of one's body when you would listen to here. Due to her operatic style though, there are songs it seems she has trouble keeping tempo. Anette is a bit more poppy with a "been there done that" kind of voice, but her range allows here to keep tempo easily. Overall, Nightwish is still Nightwish but they lost a very defining element with Tarja

When Tarja was lead, you knew Nightwish when they came on the radio. Hearing that powerful, operatic voice in the midst of symphonic metal defined the very essence of their sound and what made them unique. Without Tarja, there is very little separating their sound from other bands these days. They are still my favorite band, without a doubt. They kick too much @ss not to be. But without Tarja, their sound just is not as unique as it once was.

Plus the songs written from now on are different cause they need to meet the requirements of Anette's voice so its inevitable for NW to change their music(comparing to the old songs) so yeah NW are different band now and practically that means OLD NW dont exist without Tarja.

To be honest someone can understand a singer's quality by the way they actually sing on live concerts.Having heard how Anette sings live id rather not hear any other live concerts of NW. Well i am NW fan but not with this singer and the reason is that Tuomas may be, indeed ,writing most of the songs etc etc but its Tarja that delivers them to our ears so that makes her atleast half the NW i know.

I'm always saying that Nightwish is not all about Tarja, but what to do? There are people that don't get it....

People who supported NW with Tarja and now with Anette are real fans!
I must admit, I really prefer Tarja but I still like the new stuff and love the lyrics Tuomas writes! And anyway, I think Anette has grown a lot since 2007, their new album will be so much better than DPP I guess :)

I think that we have a lot of luck, becouse we had the pleasure tu hear music form the same band but in two beautiful diferent ways, and i'm agree with you of course, if you are a real fan you have to support the band in everything that changes, in this case Antte gives more life to all the song, i mean, in my opinon she sing the "old songs" better than tarja does, any way this is THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD.

You know what...? I really understand your thought. BUT. You say, that people can't decide if your a fan or not just because you prefer one singer. But sometimes it's seems as if you'd think, that people who don't like Annette aren't real fans.
You wrote that Nightwish are FIVE persons.... including Tarja. I don't hate annette. And Amaranth is a song I really like, but I think Nightwish without Tarja is not the Nightwish I like. Annette just shouldn't sing the old songs. Then I would like her.

I'm sorry if I came off that way in the video, I'm not saying you HAVE to LIKE Anette, I just believe a real fan would atleast respect her, ya know? I understand personal taste. I dont even like Anette's versions of a couple older songs...but it's not like I hate her for it...I just wish everyone else could be like that cuz I think Anette is wonderful and doesnt deserve the rude comments D:

Yeah. Ok. I think you're right. She doesn't deserve to be treated the way she is. But I'm sure most of the fans who "hate" her are just unbelievable sad, cause there favourite band quit in some way. Think you understand what I mean.
Most of them don't want (or wanted?) her, cause they don't think it's right that Tarja was exchanged so easily, you know?

@FriFroJones I can't really say I'm an Anette fan, or a Tarja fan, or a Nightwish fan. I'm a Ciaran fan. I have personally encountered the entity described by Tarja Turunen in Track 11 of "My Winter Storm", "Ciaran's Well" and search for _that_ voice in the music that I listen to, whether it's Anette, Tarja, Elisha Jordon or Gary Moore who's singing. (Elisha Jordon=Nemo cover; Gary Moore=Over The Hills original.)

I have heard Nightwish since my childhood, I can tell you that's what attracted me to them, I always told myself, the singer's voice is beautiful and the lyrics are so poetic by Tuomas, was sad dismissal turunen , and if something like this for me, was really sad.

I like both singers really and agree they are both beautiful and talented women. I really enjoy everything nightwish make and toumas is a genius I really think annette is a lovely person and I enjoyed tarjas my winterstorm so It dosent bother me that annette is the new singer I'll always enjoy nightwish and tarjas solo work that's what I believe in

I am a HUGE fan of nightwish!!!Here is my feelings..after Tuomas and the boys got anette.i feel that their music has reached a much deeper level.Their music has become the "vocalist".if you catch my drift.Anette is some kind of "Storyteller"yes she is the vocalist but! i think this was the goal tuomas kind of dreamed about for his music.If you listen to the songs without focusing too much on the vocalist.the songs are alive. can you hear it? I can hear it...:)

Sorry but the Nightwish I was a fan off is long gone... Lets hope Floor Jansens new band is any good or Tarja does a Bruce Dickinson\Rob Halford and comes back to Nightwish as her Solo stuff sucks due to inability to find a good songwriter...

Its not even that big of a deal really. There shouldnt be any controversy about this issue. It's not our choice who sings.. its not our band. Its their. People hate to hate.. it doesnt matter what about and if people want to be negative then let them they are only hurting themselves. Sure its annoying but oh well. Arent we doing the same thingby being negative toward the people whoare being negative. lol. Let people thinkwhat they want to. If they believe TarjaWAS Nightwish let them cause weknow
