While the Hastings Council is wringing its hands, it is to blame. If the pier was so important, why wasn't it publicly-owned and run? Why did it not have an effective fire-fighting system (not beyond the wit of man - the pier is built over an inexhaustible source of water!). What on earth was a Panamanian-registered company doing running the pier (was it an "offshore" wheeze?). It epitomises the UK's crappy approach to the public sector. Shame on the Hastings Council !

I went there a few years back with my ex-partner and was really shocked to see that it has just been closed down. Now I hear it has burnt down. It seems south coast seasides in the U.K have a history of being either badly run by incompetent local council idiots, or "arsoned" for insurance purposes by crooked owners. Look at the way Folkestone and Margate have also been ruined by the closure of their fairgrounds.

It saddens me to say this as I have always loved Hastings from the days I used to go there sit on the beach, toke a biffta and read my beano comics. You cant do that anymore. Last time i went there I was told to, "hand over my tings", By a local youth of whom was planning to rob me !

I can see why this happened - it was victorian peir that hasn`t been used since 2006. In this day and age anything that gets closed and is not in use is the target of arsonists I know its a sad situation but this is the mondern world today. In my opinion if structures or buildings have closed and not in use for a long time they should be demolished because soon or later they will be victums of arson attacks.

Saddened as I am by this destruction, I cannot help but wonder how much money various parties have now collectively saved? Assuming this pier goes the way of the old Brighton one.

New Brighton pier in Liverpool has now ceased to exist. There was a reason it fell into disuse decades ago. Same with this I would imagine. I do love piers though, and would have been glad to see it regenerated. So two sides to the pier story, eh?

Of course people would visit Hastings to go Ice-skating just as I visit Eastbourne to go to their cheaper cinema and use their superior swimming pool. I think an Ice-rink would be appealing to people because I imagine it's far more fun than walking up and down a pier but it also serves as excessive. The newspaper at Christmas stated how much everyone enjoyed the temp Ice-rink in the shopping center so a larger one would be welcome.
