At one point the police made me cut the flag down from a plastic and foam pipe despite my protests that it was disrespectful to the flag. Even when invited to check the flagpole for safety the officers refused and ordered me to tear the flag off, damaging the flag. When I flat refused they produced a combat knife and cut it off for me. By singing "O Canada" the protestors are indicating that they recognise themselves as citizens, and recognise their right to act with all the rights that citizenship entails.
