how about this ur goverment and i say urs cause no scots man voted in a torry control tax so how is it posable to have somthing called tax avoides so the rich don't pay the same percent and the poor itf ur going to complain about how much money u give us all that tax avoidses if u stop that u get lots of money u can have that one from scotland and if ur still greedy u can have all the money u pay us in a year for independences then wer all happy
People look up the origin of word british beofre commenting....think you find its latin derived relating to the cultural ancestors of the welsh and cornish....the original britons (although I know not the first settlers ;) )
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland benefit from being part of the United Kingdom and it is what the majority in each part of the UK want to continue.
Long live the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
@Alfietheok was not meant to be racist just the truth. you have waited to long to try and get your right's and it's to late now . your elite's are to busy trying to be European's and have no intention of changing . they have total control of the voting system ' and the euro parliament will not recognise the English as an entity . and your biggest problem is the apathetic nature of the English . in short you are screwed .
The right to the ownership of Scotland is with the Scottish people, not the British, English or anyone else! Now is the time to assert that right! The control of Scottish affairs and destinies should be with the Scottish people, and not with any foreign government! An independent Scotland would guarantee civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities for all Scots! It is now time for us all to proclaim our rights and regain our national freedom, sovereignty and our place in the world!
The right to the ownership of England is with the English people, not the British, Scottish or anyone else! Now is the time to assert that right! The control of English affairs and destinies should be with the English people, and not with any foreign government! An independent England would guarantee civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities for all Englishmen. It is now time for us all to proclaim our rights and regain our national freedom, sovereignty and our place in the world!
@weareScottish - Just off to pay the neck end of 30 quid for the privilege of having 4 prescriptions from the chemist... I love this union of equals, don't you?
@Alfietheok I agree with you, it is not a union of equals, far from it in fact! Independence and the dissolution of the out of date, imperialist UK will benefit both of our countries! But as long as the British government continues to impose it's rule upon Scotland, then this unequal union will continue! In the 21st century, surely it makes sense that both Scotland and England should rule themselves, as normal independent nations!
Scotland this,Scotland that.If you dont want the union DON"T VOTE FOR UNIONIST PARTIES.This is the English who want the union, not us.FFS and all this pish about Scotland getting more money and doin well out the union is a load of bullshit. Why the fuck are our poverty levels and unemployment rates higher if we are getting such a good deal? The English need to wake up and stop believing the bullshit that the gov't controlled, unionist media is feeding them.
hey idiots, the barnett formula is not a subside scotland last year generated about 50 billion pounds for the uk goverment and only about 18 billion went back up to scotland through the barnett formula.
i swing from wanting independence to wanting to remain part of the union. i cant help being put off going it alone when i hear the reasons most people have for wanting to be independent. scotland has definitely benefitted from being part of the union in the past, but all this money for public sector jobs that just aren't needed is so bad for scotland that i feel we may have to leave, just to shed the fat and be strong again.
The peoples of the seperate nations within these islands should stand alone and sovereign. Each should look after their own affairs, celebrate their own successes and work on their own short comings. Problem is, MP's would have to actually work to reboot our new independent nations... And we all know MP's don't actually like to do that hence all the negativity and scare-mongering...
Aye, fucken fuck that shitty union jack, I fucken hate the sight of it, nobody want's that shite, it's a shite fucken dirty fucking crappy fucken flag, Red was one of my favourite colours, unless it was an engirlish flag though,
But fuck that stinking union flag too,
Give me Blue and White anyday (Scottish Saltire Flag),
For 300 years Scotland has had to live as a small region rather than a full country, time to actually be a proper country now!!!!
scotland do deserve more in the barnet formula thats jus a fact, the top 12 deprived areas in britian are scottish ones, also we got hut with the poll tax afore the english did
Absolutely agree. England should be free of the union - and good riddance to bad rubbish. I look forward to the day when this happens - and we actually have our very own First Minister and Parliament.
But I think calling Gordon Brown an 'uneducated blind idiot' is an insult too far...
@Alfietheok When we part company with the Jocks, the Trogs and the Paddies, can we also get rid of the whingeing, whining Northern Monkeys? Especially the snivelling Scouse parasites. Northerners live off Southern money, yet they repay us with hatred and envy instead of gratitude. Let’s see how well they manage without “Southern Softies” to support them!
@EssexTory. Steady now. This 'snivelling Scouse parasite' can hardly agree with that sentiment now can I? Let's not go down the route of area stereotyping, (Essex facelifts, Y-shaped coffins, etc).
Bucking that Scouse trend of envy, hatred & the tendency to nick your car, I don't hate or envy anyone. All I want for England is what everyone else has in the UK - national democracy. It's just a pity that the Tories have so betrayed their bedrock support, isn't it?
Uneducated blind idiot , England resceives more from the union than anyone Scotland contribuated 42.7 Billion and received 18.1 Billion back , who do you think got the the rest ?? break the union now and fuck the union jack now no one wants it so why does it still exist
Please do not listen to these hapless fools breaking the UK would make us weaker and would be expensive like a divorce where we'd have to pay alimony, why not stay United, we are one of the strongest Nations on Earth. United we stand, divided we fall.
Ask yourself are you proud of these people,Lord Nelson, Duke of Wellington,Sir Hugh Dowding,Sir Robert Watson Watt. They all have something in comman. They saved this country from Invasion at some point, and guess what they are not all English. Two are Scots.Rule Brittania
What the video does not take into account that alot of theese powers are devolved so Scots will have diffrent priorities that have been taken by the Scottish goverment. However Scotland is still underfunded we put a lot more into the union than we take out. In fact SCOTLANd has contributed 800m Surplus to the uk on last count but havent seen a penny of it. The only way forward is Independnce for Scotland. Its good for Scotland and its good for England.
the problem we have is lack of proportional representation.
first past the post means remote glens in western scotland with populations of less than 100 have the same voting power as a city the size of sunderland with a population of 300,000.
fact is labour hasnt won an election in ENGLAND since 1997, scotland and wales have kept them in power.
Labour won a majority of seats in ENGLAND in 1997, 2001 and 2005. That is fact, I'm afraid. If you want to blame anyone for keeping Labour in power - blame Northern England.
And remote Highland Glens have no more representation than Sunderland does. Average constituency sizes are bigger in Scotland - in fact the number of Scottish constituences was considerably reduced at the last General Election.
a handful of oil rigs exploited by london based companies + tourism from england (international tourists come to england and visit scotland as an after thought. most tourists to scotland are english)
you wont even have the revenue from the nuclear weapon base or the raf bases coz theyd be removed. or the billions being spent on those new aircraft carriers in glasgow - that work could easily go to tyneside, wearside or belfast....
We'd fund an independent Scotland like any other country funds itself. Scotland is no different.
As for industries we've got Europe's largest stock of renewables, carbon storage in the North Sea's depleted oil fields is projected to be an even larger income earner for Scotland than oil was.
Then there are the normal industries that we have here - aerospace, biotechnology, financial services, agriculture, food and drink, microelectronics, electronics, textiles, research and development etc etc
so what? scotland is divided country and always has been apart from what, once - at bannockburn?
the rest of the time theyve been fighting each other, or when the english came north to dish out the annual kick in the bollocks half sided with the english against the other half.
lol every country is divided to an extent - politically, socially, economically. In some cases that extends to linguistics.
Even England is divided along some of these lines. I'd say in many ways England is more divided than Scotland is.
What Scotland has as a unifying structure is a more more powerful sense of national identity - something that England is only beginning to attempt to get. In that regard, England is still far more divided than Scotland is.
the barnett formula does need scrapped asap but i fail to see why it is scotlands fault that our parliament allocates funds as it does. anyway, the SNP is fast finding out that it cant keep its promises and councils are being taken to court right left and centre for breaching european law while trying to cut class sizes for example. it will all straighten out soon enough, when our parliament starts to use its tax raising powers. that will be fun.
England isn't getting screwed. They're getting the best deal out of the lot of us. How much Scottish oil revenue has bailed them out over the last 40 years? Several hundreds of billions at least. How much of that Scottish revenue has Scotland seen/ None, zilch, nada.
not talking about oil money, thats too narrow. and i always find its interesting how oil and whisky revenues are factored out of scotlands contribution to the uk pot while projest such as the olympics are factored out of the sums when englands share of the cash is counted. puts a new wheel on the wagon does it not?
was referring to the rather large democratic black hole in this country.
oil revenues from the north sea rigs are very small. a drop in the ocean. the amount of it that an independent scotland would be entitled too is even smaller still. the fact is most of britains money is made either in londons stock markets or english industry, lets not forget that not only scotland, but the whole of the EU relies on english money!
and the olympics is a crock of shite - i live in the north.... the football world cup, if we get it, is where my area will benefit.
small drop in the ocean but we are only a little pond. its enough to halve our projected deficit post independence, going by the governments own figures.
the majority of "oil revenue" is actually corporation taxes etc raked in from shell oils and bp in london.
the amount of that coming from north sea oil is tiny. and the percentage of that tiny amount which would be due to an independent scotland would be minute.
hogalog, you are wrong on most of the things you're saying here, it's obvious you're trying to make scotland look bad, why? what does it really matter to you how scotland looks compared to england, or what scots think of their own country? my advice to you would be keep your nose out of other peoples lives, concentrate on what YOU do, inYOUR country.
i do.... i am concentrating on the point that we in england give away our money in horrendous amounts to the eu, and to a lesser extent, scotland... WHY?! at least the eu will admit to robbing us blind.
im guessing 1987 is your year of birth, so will credit you with being old enough to realise that salmond is full of shite and scotland couldnt afford its public spending habits if it was independent.... however im quite sure you will prove that assumption wrong
stunned you can even contemplate comparing the uk to the eu. respected your arguements before since you don't resort to the vile low-intelligence insults of many on youtube, but you really have taken the biscuit now.
the uk is greater than the sum of its parts and has been more successful than it ever should have been. the eu is bent as a £9 note and we would be better off burning our money than giving more to brussels.
we all would. the best thing that could ever happen is for the uk to stay together, and to leave the eu.
even out the money so that public spending is the same wherever you are in the uk and run the place the way it was ran to become the greatest nation on earth.
at the end of the day england and scotland have their differences but together were immensely strong..... and scotland should never forget, THE SALTIRE IS IN THE UNION FLAG!!
alex salmond wants to win independence from england only to give it away to europe... thats very muddled logic so im with you on your low opinion of him as well. what a fandango.
ive no problem with the friendly banter. and the pride of being scottish or english or welsh. that isnt a problem. i visit scotland regularly, along with durham and york edinburgh is 1 of my fave cities. and places like fort william are beautiful. but this independence stuff is stupid, and i really fear for scottish children with the shite they are being taught in school. you just have to look at the comments on videos like this too see!!
yeah im all for the peace and love as well but i'm from glasgow so a great big "boooooo" to edinburgh being so high up your list :P i do rate york though...
wouldn't worry about the schools, mel gibson is more likely to have an effect than any daft political tinkering.
i liked glasgow. everybody seems to be pissed on buckfast and have a knife scar on their throat. but they were dead friendly people, a lot like where i am from (s'land) but im just a fan of the olde worlde, gas lamps and gothic buildings you know.
easy tiger. thats like saying that everyone in edinburgh is either english or japanese tourists! (even my ex who stays in edinburgh is english!) you must have been at the dodgy end ;)
haha aye its stereotyping to a certain degree, like not every scouser steals cars..... ok they do ;)
but you know what i mean. it was friendly and good fun (though i cant imagine itd have been as pleasant on au'd firm day!) but its the same as many post industrial towns. the buildings are shabby and everything is run down. like i said im from sunderland and its very similiar to glasgow here; albeit smaller and without the sectarianism!
don't be fooled, glasgows changing her dress as we speak. ;-)
rangers is about to go bust and celtic are upping sticks to england as soon as sky gives the go-ahead so that will be the end of that malarkey anyway. :(
celtic wont be allowed in the english leagues, for several reasons.
they would have too start in the northern league to be fair to the other clubs....
rangers would have to be included too. and if the violence between them 2 happened in the english leagues wed be banned from entering teams into the CL and from competing in the euro/world cups. so it wont happen.
s'land is SLOWLY being regenerated too, note: SLOWLY. the labour council here is useless.
celtic will be in the english leagues if the tv moneymen say so. they are one of the biggest clubs in the world, just stuck in a wee diddy league. rangers will be on the skids by this point anyway the way things are going.
old firm violence is kiddy scrapping compared with what goes on in italy and anyway was there not a big carry on wi fans in england recently?
by the way, im a rangers girl so i dont say theses things for the chuckles :s
haha rangers girl?! you just went up in my estimation, because we all know; big jock knew and all that ;) lol
well yes, italy never gets banned... but old firm violence would see england banned from everything. its amazing they didnt after last seasons wear-tyne derby!
and celtic are no bigger than say rangers, or sunderland, or newcastle, or tottenham, or liverpool.... they arent in the same league as say man u, barca, real madrid, ac milan, benfica etc
not into this whole BJKFTPWATP rubbish. it's embarrasin to be honest. some folk really do need to get a grip of themselves :s
theres not alot of old firm violence that would affect the football side of things these days, honestly. average joes and josephines are not that bothered who supports who. domestic violence goes through the roof on derby day however. any old excuse though.
celtic are just like a plant that needs re-potted, thats all. they have the potential to grow.
and as do rangers. and thrown into the spotlight of the EPL id dare say both edinburgh teams, dundee united and aburrrdoooon would have this potential too.
but like i said, it would never happen money men or no money men. the decision lies with the english and scottish fa's. the english fa would worry about the violence etc. and the scottish fa wouldnt want to kill the goose that laid the golden egg, so to speak. plus fifa would push for us to abandon seperate teams and have a "team gb".
the dundees and aberdeens of the world don't have the same fan base to work with im afraid. the travelling support rangers took to manchester was the numerical equivalent of the entire city of dundee.
the decision lies with the moneymen, be realistic. money makes the world go round, the football world especially.
don't a few welsh teams play in english leagues anyway?
dundee united and aberdeen......... wigan, burnley, blackburn, bolton, middlesbrough.......
swansea, cardiff, wrecsam, and technically chester used too. but they were in the english league before the welsh had their own league. if scottish teams came into the english league, it would be the end for seperate national teams.
it would be like the lions rugby team only without the irish...... so itd be england with a couple of welsh players, and scotland wouldnt get any representation ;) lol.
It is actually mainly from PRT (Petroleum Revenue Tax) and Shell is a Dutch company. BP is a multinational company that pays tax to many jurisdictions throughout the world.
It doesn't just half Scotland's deficit - because Scotland doesn't have a deficit. But you are right on these being factored out of Scotland's contribution in the past. That has changed now though.
The equivalent is factoring out the revenues from the City of London and justifying that by saying that most of the companies that operate there are foreign - so it doesn't matter.
Really, we raised £49bn in tax in the last tax year. We in Scotland got £48bn in total government spending spent on us.....so that makes us in your debt how exactly?
England on the other hand had £100bn MORE spent on it that it raised in taxes.
Scots have to pay for your Olympics, Crossrail and subsidise your infrastructure projects as well? Do you think that is fair?
london itself raises in a matter of weeks what scotland does in a year.
it was in the papers about labours election victories.
i agree on the olympics, i live in the NE and i dont think we should pay for it. but then, scotland is in a shortfall (£4bn at last count) funded from england.
money badly needed for urgent projects in northern england is instead going to fund the new forth bridge.
DO NOT believe everything salmond says. hes a liar and thick.
Scotland doesn't have a shortfall. It was in surplus to £800m on the last count. If you look at the detailed statistics on the National Statistics website this is extremely clear.
Even if we had a shortfall of £4bn - that is less pro rata than England's financial shortfall which is over £100bn this year alone.
And as for Salmond, surely you have to agree he is better than any other UK politician around these days? Brown, Cameron, Clegg? He'd piss on every one of them.
wow guss what life isn't fare but you dont here people Bi*****ing about that now do you? guss what the Scottish people have been apart of this "Union" for more than 300 years and we are all sick of it cuz the Union dose Jack all for us
let's hope so evo, I hate the fact that part of my taxes go to that northern useless country.. We want to keep our own money, keep your oil (which is running out) and the next time RBS goes bust, we should just let....
So, yes please have your freedom! Freedom for England please...
In Scotland buildings we fly the Union flag. I think I should know I have been in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen etc.... Stop moaning. Per Capit per 1000 Head. There is less people in Scotland so there is more to give. Now we give the hole of the UK are fucking oil damn right we will have more.
So what's the point of the video? "England isn't looking after its students, old people, and infirm, therefore SCOTLAND MUST NOT SEPARATE!"? Funny how what France does doesn't figure into this... why? Separate country. So if Scotland were already separate, and spending its own money its own way, England would be free to do the same. But at least the shortcomings then couldn't be blamed on the Scottish, the Welsh, the Northern Irish... Tell London to STOP SCREWING YOU OVER, not Edinburgh to stay.
England? What about Wales and Northern Ireland whats so special about England? Ur a pussy bitch who thinks England something well there not. And Yes I think Scotland should stay in the UK.
I'm not a kid, goofus; I'm not one using "Ur" for "you are", or thumbing in "eb", "jelous", and "kepp" as though texting this in on his cell on the busy, busy bus trip down to Tesco's to buy his first razor. You are. Or should I say, "U R so now U R pwned sux 2BU ha ha"?
Grow a pair. Scotland's not England. England is. Stand on your own two feet instead of someone else's.
Get a life I dont want Scotland to be like Ireland a weak nothing to the world and a country with no military and no say in Global affairs. No thanks child.
You actually think Scotland has these things just because it's carried around in England's tit pocket? That's hilarious! :D
You want Scotland to cut some ice in this world? Get it a seat on the UN. Get it a separate voice in the EU. Make NATO have to come courting. Right now, England says jump, and Scotland asks "How much under my kilt do you want me to show?" :)P
Get this into your stupid head. Scotland is not A country ok. We are in the EU, We are one of the the top 5 members of the UN, we are in Nato. You Irish are jelous of Scotland and how much more powerful it is to Ireland. SNP hate NATO SNP have gone quiet about independance. And recent polls have shown Scotland want to stay in the UK. Get a life Irish fenian boy.
Scotland is a country, actually; it's no longer sovereign, having been tricked into handing it balls over to England to be kept a jar under the sink in London in 1707. Scotland is not in the EU per se; the UK is (and even then, it's debatable). "Jealous" has an A in it. It would be hard for the Irish to envy Scotland a status they fought 800 years to finally shake off; one might as well envy the sheep dotting the Highlands.
Grow up and stop bending over for the English like a kilted bum-boy.
Are you an idiot? Scotland faught England 3 times. Ha-ha your watching brave heart to many time doing your brain in. Your jelous that Scotland is more powerful richer and better than Ireland thats ok. Scotland is powerful unlike poor Ireland. Grow some balls and gtet out the EU then they push you lot around. And hurry up and sign the lisbon ginger drunk.
Fat fenian duck. Your not even Scottish you idiot. Funyn how labour Government is 70% Scottish armed forces 45% Scottish ha-ha, Face it Ireland is nothing but a neutral shit country with a shit small economy. Thats all you Irish pricks live for a lisbon treaty so you can be "powerfu;" in an EU super State dream on with your disgusting drunk junkie accent. Fucking morons.
And what the fuck do you mean "up the SNP" stupid little fucking fenian pope loving cunt head. Little no life. You have no friends. Your the biggest loser no life scum bag on youtube. The Irish flag is disgusting shity orange and white and that disgusting fucked up green, Thats why 400 thousand of us had a hate Ireland march in Edinbugh you lot are fucking disgusting.
Wonder why even more and more English hate unionists?! Face it son, you're a dying breed - the union's gonna be dead within 3 years and we'll be dancing in the streets from London to Cardiff to Edinburgh to celebrate.
Ooo, don't you love this? England sucks the oil out of Scotland's backyard for 40 years, and then hands an "extra" 1500 quid of Scotland's own money back to Scots... relative to the money they keep in England, that is.
Makes you wonder what England was doing "for" Ireland before 1922, doesn't it? Or "for" India or "for" South Africa, or "for" Hong Kong, which it "gave" a democratic government only as it was reaching for its umbrella and bowler hat on the way out the door. :/
I don't see why you in England are moaning... it's you who screw us and Scotland over - you force your parliament and 'Royal' family on us... you use our taxes to pay for your olympics, cross rail, high speed rail link, T5 in Heathrow and all the other infrastructure investments in England - while here in Wales you expect us to be happy with 1 motorway and 3 train lines for the whole country.
We've been shat upon by England for centuries....it'll never stop until we have Independence for Wales.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The union will never be defeated by SNP scum like you. There is enough true Queen loving British patriots prepared to fight and kill for the land we love to defend these hallow pastures.
You have got a bit of a fetish going on there with your little Queen! As to the rest of your stutterings and mutterings.Gaun crawl back intae the gutter ye came frae! INDEPENDENCE
England cannot be Free! She is the nation that coerced others into this union! So let us get this clear! Scotland leaves and the rest leave then your merry old England shall be Free!As for the oil 95% of it are in Scottish water! This is recognized by the UN and the international court in the Hague!Your countries aspirations will not change that!Boundary changes or not! INDEPENDENCE!
Totally right. The oil and gas is in Scottish waters and if you had left the union 30 years ago you'd be one of the richest nations on the planet. - Keep pushing for your freedom mate.... Wales supports Scotland 100%
there hardly any oil left so stopm going on about it england has over 40 million people there, when your countries barely have ten million so how much taxpayers money is made in england rather than the other 3., but yet we still share it with the rest of the uk.
I suppose the same as you would equate an English soldier's life in the service of the union. I suppose the same way you would equate the health service drain to Scotland from poor commonwealth countries around the world. I suppose the 45% of north sea oil that resided in English waters might have helped. Where would England be without celtic resources? Free....
how is the death of a scottish soldiers in the service of the union over the last 300 years equated? how is the service of a scottish brain drain to london ove 300 years equated? how is saving the union from bankrupcy in 1975 with north sea oil and gas equated? where would england, really be now without it's celtic resources?
It's interesting to note that people are referring to England, Scotland and Wales and their respective acomplishments and failures as exclusive to each yet not one person has discussed what we have all achieved as one united nation? Surely the things we have achieved and could achieve in the future as one greater united entity are far more impressive than what we would all acomplish individually? How can we progress when things that happened hundreds of years ago drive us appart?
The enslavement of most of Africa and Asia? The extermination of a number of tribes? Banking based on the Chinese Opium Trade (which funded Hong Kong).
But on the other hand, there has never been "one nation" (ein Volk) in the UK!
"are far more impressive than what we would all acomplish individually? "
Aye right, empire building. That's not going to happen again, right or wrong, without American permission.
Enslavement? The people of this nation were among the first to speak out against slavery and abolish it. Isn't that something to be proud of? I'm not sure where your facts about us "enslaving" most of Africa or Asia come from either. The fact that we have built a lasting union with many independent nations across the planet based on mutual friendship and ties? The Commonwealth arguably brought more people from across the world together than anything before it. I'm proud of being part of that.
"The people of this nation were among the first to speak out against slavery and abolish it. Isn't that something to be proud of?"
That is, but the mass enslavement isn't. Although there's a common misunderstanding about Wilberforce. He wanted the SALE of slaves banned, not slavery.
"I'm not sure where your facts about us "enslaving" most of Africa or Asia come from either."
Look at a map of the British Empire. Conquering, colonising, and taking taxes off a place is a form of enslavement.
I didn't mention Wilberforce at all. In the end the British were among the first to abolish it period, and I'm sure the freed slaves weren't worried too much about the true motives. I have a very good idea about the extent of the British Empries boundries thanks, and if you did you'd realise "Most of Africa and Asia" is more than an overstatement. We all pay taxes, it doesn't make us slaves... that's just a rediculous cynical view.
Again, really don't agree there. You could quite easily argue that the Roman empire did some pretty disgraceful things, yet they are arguably the most influential civilization in the world. Even the language you speak comes from them in some form or another. Should I take responsibility for the War in Iraq as I'm British? Should I take responsibility for the creation of the concentration camp? All these things you will find are the work of a few people, not representative of the British people.
"All these things you will find are the work of a few people, not representative of the British people."
An Empire - any empire - is by definition barbaric. They are created by force.
"Should I take responsibility for the War in Iraq as I'm British?"
You should try and disown it, and make your voice heard. And I'd stop calling yourself British, and be English, Scottish or Welsh or whatever you really are.
Yet the independent former provinces of the British Empire overwhelmingly decided to retain close ties with Britain? And still we linger on the subject of empire, when Britain has contributed a considerable amount to the modern world not related to it.
"Yet the independent former provinces of the British Empire overwhelmingly decided to retain close ties with Britain?"
Their leadership sometimes does. But that's because they've all been shoved through an anglified education system to help them "think" the right way, and the colonies' economies were "reorientated" to benefit the mother country.
Of course, British "self-determination" is all one way. One rule for Gibraltar and the Falklands, another rule for Ireland and India.
Overwhelmingly they do chose to retain ties, not just now and again. Only middle eastern nations didn't. And to say it's because we forced British values upon them is also untrue. Take India for example... various great examples exist through out the British Colonial period of the disasters of trying to Anglicise the population. Indian culture remained pretty unchanged and intact throughout. Inevitably British culture supplanted native culture in many regions, but it was almost never forcefuly.
Who gave the thumbs down to my comment about the beautiful, NON-FLAT areas of England, i.e. the Lakes, the Yorkshire Dales, the Pennines, Northumbria etc? I only spoke the truth, they are beautiful and hilly, only a blind person would deny that!
I don't think so! I am English! Ever been abused in your own country for being Scottish! I have been abused for having an English accent in Wales and Scotland and even England! It is time to cut the ties! Sorry to say it but someone has to! I mean no ill to you but I have had enough of being blamed for something my ancestor's did 300 years ago! Please take Tony Blair and Gordon Brown with you!
who's blaming you for what happened 300 years ago? britain was united 300 years ago. gordon brown wouldnt get elected here, you might as well keep him.
The act of union was passed around 1606 for your info! The bill was passed in Scotland through your own house by your own lords and peers! No please take Gordon back! LOL!

@Alfietheok I agree with you, it is not a union of equals, far from it in fact! Independence and the dissolution of the out of date, imperialist UK will benefit both of our countries! But as long as the British government continues to impose it's rule upon Scotland, then this unequal union will continue! In the 21st century, surely it makes sense that both Scotland and England should rule themselves, as normal independent nations!

i swing from wanting independence to wanting to remain part of the union. i cant help being put off going it alone when i hear the reasons most people have for wanting to be independent. scotland has definitely benefitted from being part of the union in the past, but all this money for public sector jobs that just aren't needed is so bad for scotland that i feel we may have to leave, just to shed the fat and be strong again.

Its good for Scotland and its good for England.
mullac1980 2 years ago
the problem we have is lack of proportional representation.
first past the post means remote glens in western scotland with populations of less than 100 have the same voting power as a city the size of sunderland with a population of 300,000.
fact is labour hasnt won an election in ENGLAND since 1997, scotland and wales have kept them in power.
hogalog 2 years ago
yeah sorry about that :(
elljay1989 2 years ago
Utter rubbish.
Labour won a majority of seats in ENGLAND in 1997, 2001 and 2005. That is fact, I'm afraid. If you want to blame anyone for keeping Labour in power - blame Northern England.
And remote Highland Glens have no more representation than Sunderland does. Average constituency sizes are bigger in Scotland - in fact the number of Scottish constituences was considerably reduced at the last General Election.
globaltraveller 2 years ago
so how would you fund an independent scotland?
a handful of oil rigs exploited by london based companies + tourism from england (international tourists come to england and visit scotland as an after thought. most tourists to scotland are english)
you wont even have the revenue from the nuclear weapon base or the raf bases coz theyd be removed. or the billions being spent on those new aircraft carriers in glasgow - that work could easily go to tyneside, wearside or belfast....
hogalog 2 years ago
We'd fund an independent Scotland like any other country funds itself. Scotland is no different.
As for industries we've got Europe's largest stock of renewables, carbon storage in the North Sea's depleted oil fields is projected to be an even larger income earner for Scotland than oil was.
Then there are the normal industries that we have here - aerospace, biotechnology, financial services, agriculture, food and drink, microelectronics, electronics, textiles, research and development etc etc

the rest of the time theyve been fighting each other, or when the english came north to dish out the annual kick in the bollocks half sided with the english against the other half.
hogalog 2 years ago
lol every country is divided to an extent - politically, socially, economically. In some cases that extends to linguistics.
Even England is divided along some of these lines. I'd say in many ways England is more divided than Scotland is.
What Scotland has as a unifying structure is a more more powerful sense of national identity - something that England is only beginning to attempt to get. In that regard, England is still far more divided than Scotland is.

easy1355 2 years ago
the barnett formula does need scrapped asap but i fail to see why it is scotlands fault that our parliament allocates funds as it does. anyway, the SNP is fast finding out that it cant keep its promises and councils are being taken to court right left and centre for breaching european law while trying to cut class sizes for example. it will all straighten out soon enough, when our parliament starts to use its tax raising powers. that will be fun.
meantime, england deserves a voice :)
elljay1989 2 years ago 2
scotland doesnt make enough money to stand alone. even if public spending was the same across the board, scotland would STILL be in englands debt.

not to worry old bean, im doin this shite at uni, writing my dissertation on how englands currently gettin screwed. il sort it out ;-) haha
elljay1989 2 years ago
Scottish independence?
globaltraveller 2 years ago
England isn't getting screwed. They're getting the best deal out of the lot of us. How much Scottish oil revenue has bailed them out over the last 40 years? Several hundreds of billions at least. How much of that Scottish revenue has Scotland seen/ None, zilch, nada.
globaltraveller 2 years ago
erm.
that oil revenue is miniscule. and the oil is almost completely gone.
and the companies exploiting it are english.
hogalog 2 years ago
not talking about oil money, thats too narrow. and i always find its interesting how oil and whisky revenues are factored out of scotlands contribution to the uk pot while projest such as the olympics are factored out of the sums when englands share of the cash is counted. puts a new wheel on the wagon does it not?
was referring to the rather large democratic black hole in this country.
elljay1989 2 years ago
oil revenues from the north sea rigs are very small. a drop in the ocean. the amount of it that an independent scotland would be entitled too is even smaller still. the fact is most of britains money is made either in londons stock markets or english industry, lets not forget that not only scotland, but the whole of the EU relies on english money!
and the olympics is a crock of shite - i live in the north.... the football world cup, if we get it, is where my area will benefit.
hogalog 2 years ago
small drop in the ocean but we are only a little pond. its enough to halve our projected deficit post independence, going by the governments own figures.
elljay1989 2 years ago
the majority of "oil revenue" is actually corporation taxes etc raked in from shell oils and bp in london.
the amount of that coming from north sea oil is tiny. and the percentage of that tiny amount which would be due to an independent scotland would be minute.
plus they are almost fully exploited anyway.
hogalog 2 years ago
hogalog, you are wrong on most of the things you're saying here, it's obvious you're trying to make scotland look bad, why? what does it really matter to you how scotland looks compared to england, or what scots think of their own country? my advice to you would be keep your nose out of other peoples lives, concentrate on what YOU do, inYOUR country.
scottishlad1987 2 years ago
i do.... i am concentrating on the point that we in england give away our money in horrendous amounts to the eu, and to a lesser extent, scotland... WHY?! at least the eu will admit to robbing us blind.
im guessing 1987 is your year of birth, so will credit you with being old enough to realise that salmond is full of shite and scotland couldnt afford its public spending habits if it was independent.... however im quite sure you will prove that assumption wrong
hogalog 2 years ago
stunned you can even contemplate comparing the uk to the eu. respected your arguements before since you don't resort to the vile low-intelligence insults of many on youtube, but you really have taken the biscuit now.
the uk is greater than the sum of its parts and has been more successful than it ever should have been. the eu is bent as a £9 note and we would be better off burning our money than giving more to brussels.
elljay1989 2 years ago
we all would. the best thing that could ever happen is for the uk to stay together, and to leave the eu.
even out the money so that public spending is the same wherever you are in the uk and run the place the way it was ran to become the greatest nation on earth.
at the end of the day england and scotland have their differences but together were immensely strong..... and scotland should never forget, THE SALTIRE IS IN THE UNION FLAG!!
hogalog 2 years ago
agreed. :)
alex salmond wants to win independence from england only to give it away to europe... thats very muddled logic so im with you on your low opinion of him as well. what a fandango.
elljay1989 2 years ago
ive no problem with the friendly banter. and the pride of being scottish or english or welsh. that isnt a problem. i visit scotland regularly, along with durham and york edinburgh is 1 of my fave cities. and places like fort william are beautiful. but this independence stuff is stupid, and i really fear for scottish children with the shite they are being taught in school. you just have to look at the comments on videos like this too see!!
hogalog 2 years ago
yeah im all for the peace and love as well but i'm from glasgow so a great big "boooooo" to edinburgh being so high up your list :P i do rate york though...
wouldn't worry about the schools, mel gibson is more likely to have an effect than any daft political tinkering.
elljay1989 2 years ago
i liked glasgow. everybody seems to be pissed on buckfast and have a knife scar on their throat. but they were dead friendly people, a lot like where i am from (s'land) but im just a fan of the olde worlde, gas lamps and gothic buildings you know.
hogalog 2 years ago
easy tiger. thats like saying that everyone in edinburgh is either english or japanese tourists! (even my ex who stays in edinburgh is english!) you must have been at the dodgy end ;)
elljay1989 2 years ago
haha aye its stereotyping to a certain degree, like not every scouser steals cars..... ok they do ;)
but you know what i mean. it was friendly and good fun (though i cant imagine itd have been as pleasant on au'd firm day!) but its the same as many post industrial towns. the buildings are shabby and everything is run down. like i said im from sunderland and its very similiar to glasgow here; albeit smaller and without the sectarianism!
hogalog 2 years ago
don't be fooled, glasgows changing her dress as we speak. ;-)
rangers is about to go bust and celtic are upping sticks to england as soon as sky gives the go-ahead so that will be the end of that malarkey anyway. :(
elljay1989 2 years ago
celtic wont be allowed in the english leagues, for several reasons.
they would have too start in the northern league to be fair to the other clubs....
rangers would have to be included too. and if the violence between them 2 happened in the english leagues wed be banned from entering teams into the CL and from competing in the euro/world cups. so it wont happen.
s'land is SLOWLY being regenerated too, note: SLOWLY. the labour council here is useless.
hogalog 2 years ago
celtic will be in the english leagues if the tv moneymen say so. they are one of the biggest clubs in the world, just stuck in a wee diddy league. rangers will be on the skids by this point anyway the way things are going.
old firm violence is kiddy scrapping compared with what goes on in italy and anyway was there not a big carry on wi fans in england recently?
by the way, im a rangers girl so i dont say theses things for the chuckles :s
elljay1989 2 years ago
haha rangers girl?! you just went up in my estimation, because we all know; big jock knew and all that ;) lol
well yes, italy never gets banned... but old firm violence would see england banned from everything. its amazing they didnt after last seasons wear-tyne derby!
and celtic are no bigger than say rangers, or sunderland, or newcastle, or tottenham, or liverpool.... they arent in the same league as say man u, barca, real madrid, ac milan, benfica etc
hogalog 2 years ago
not into this whole BJKFTPWATP rubbish. it's embarrasin to be honest. some folk really do need to get a grip of themselves :s
theres not alot of old firm violence that would affect the football side of things these days, honestly. average joes and josephines are not that bothered who supports who. domestic violence goes through the roof on derby day however. any old excuse though.
celtic are just like a plant that needs re-potted, thats all. they have the potential to grow.
elljay1989 2 years ago
and as do rangers. and thrown into the spotlight of the EPL id dare say both edinburgh teams, dundee united and aburrrdoooon would have this potential too.
but like i said, it would never happen money men or no money men. the decision lies with the english and scottish fa's. the english fa would worry about the violence etc. and the scottish fa wouldnt want to kill the goose that laid the golden egg, so to speak. plus fifa would push for us to abandon seperate teams and have a "team gb".
hogalog 2 years ago
the dundees and aberdeens of the world don't have the same fan base to work with im afraid. the travelling support rangers took to manchester was the numerical equivalent of the entire city of dundee.
the decision lies with the moneymen, be realistic. money makes the world go round, the football world especially.
don't a few welsh teams play in english leagues anyway?
elljay1989 2 years ago
dundee united and aberdeen......... wigan, burnley, blackburn, bolton, middlesbrough.......
swansea, cardiff, wrecsam, and technically chester used too. but they were in the english league before the welsh had their own league. if scottish teams came into the english league, it would be the end for seperate national teams.
it would be like the lions rugby team only without the irish...... so itd be england with a couple of welsh players, and scotland wouldnt get any representation ;) lol.

It is actually mainly from PRT (Petroleum Revenue Tax) and Shell is a Dutch company. BP is a multinational company that pays tax to many jurisdictions throughout the world.
globaltraveller 2 years ago
It doesn't just half Scotland's deficit - because Scotland doesn't have a deficit. But you are right on these being factored out of Scotland's contribution in the past. That has changed now though.
The equivalent is factoring out the revenues from the City of London and justifying that by saying that most of the companies that operate there are foreign - so it doesn't matter.
globaltraveller 2 years ago
Oil revenue is currently around £12-14bn per year.
globaltraveller 2 years ago 2
Really, we raised £49bn in tax in the last tax year. We in Scotland got £48bn in total government spending spent on us.....so that makes us in your debt how exactly?
England on the other hand had £100bn MORE spent on it that it raised in taxes.
Scots have to pay for your Olympics, Crossrail and subsidise your infrastructure projects as well? Do you think that is fair?
globaltraveller 2 years ago
from what, precisely?
london itself raises in a matter of weeks what scotland does in a year.
it was in the papers about labours election victories.
i agree on the olympics, i live in the NE and i dont think we should pay for it. but then, scotland is in a shortfall (£4bn at last count) funded from england.
money badly needed for urgent projects in northern england is instead going to fund the new forth bridge.
DO NOT believe everything salmond says. hes a liar and thick.
hogalog 2 years ago
Scotland doesn't have a shortfall. It was in surplus to £800m on the last count. If you look at the detailed statistics on the National Statistics website this is extremely clear.
Even if we had a shortfall of £4bn - that is less pro rata than England's financial shortfall which is over £100bn this year alone.
And as for Salmond, surely you have to agree he is better than any other UK politician around these days? Brown, Cameron, Clegg? He'd piss on every one of them.

Scotland is not in the EU per se; the UK is (and even then, it's debatable). "Jealous" has an A in it. It would be hard for the Irish to envy Scotland a status they fought 800 years to finally shake off; one might as well envy the sheep dotting the Highlands.

maxfm82 2 years ago
Ooo, don't you love this? England sucks the oil out of Scotland's backyard for 40 years, and then hands an "extra" 1500 quid of Scotland's own money back to Scots... relative to the money they keep in England, that is.
Makes you wonder what England was doing "for" Ireland before 1922, doesn't it? Or "for" India or "for" South Africa, or "for" Hong Kong, which it "gave" a democratic government only as it was reaching for its umbrella and bowler hat on the way out the door. :/
PatchesRips 2 years ago
I don't see why you in England are moaning... it's you who screw us and Scotland over - you force your parliament and 'Royal' family on us... you use our taxes to pay for your olympics, cross rail, high speed rail link, T5 in Heathrow and all the other infrastructure investments in England - while here in Wales you expect us to be happy with 1 motorway and 3 train lines for the whole country.
We've been shat upon by England for centuries....it'll never stop until we have Independence for Wales.

INDEPENDENCE!
alba4232 2 years ago
Totally right. The oil and gas is in Scottish waters and if you had left the union 30 years ago you'd be one of the richest nations on the planet. - Keep pushing for your freedom mate.... Wales supports Scotland 100%
maxfm82 2 years ago 2
Thanks for your support!Dinna worry I will keep on working for Scotlands! We support yin tae! INDEPENDENCE!
alba4232 2 years ago
england is the biggest contributor to the uk econmy there is more money floating around in london than that scottish oil has ever produced
ross721983 2 years ago
plus its running out fast, which makes me laugh when they can only use this as an example of how independence will work.
easy1355 2 years ago 2
there hardly any oil left so stopm going on about it england has over 40 million people there, when your countries barely have ten million so how much taxpayers money is made in england rather than the other 3., but yet we still share it with the rest of the uk.
ross721983 2 years ago
I suppose the same as you would equate an English soldier's life in the service of the union. I suppose the same way you would equate the health service drain to Scotland from poor commonwealth countries around the world. I suppose the 45% of north sea oil that resided in English waters might have helped. Where would England be without celtic resources? Free....
Alfietheok 2 years ago
how is the death of a scottish soldiers in the service of the union over the last 300 years equated? how is the service of a scottish brain drain to london ove 300 years equated? how is saving the union from bankrupcy in 1975 with north sea oil and gas equated? where would england, really be now without it's celtic resources?

It's interesting to note that people are referring to England, Scotland and Wales and their respective acomplishments and failures as exclusive to each yet not one person has discussed what we have all achieved as one united nation? Surely the things we have achieved and could achieve in the future as one greater united entity are far more impressive than what we would all acomplish individually? How can we progress when things that happened hundreds of years ago drive us appart?
markzob6k 2 years ago
"what we have all achieved as one united nation?"
BobMonkfish 2 years ago
Enslavement? The people of this nation were among the first to speak out against slavery and abolish it. Isn't that something to be proud of? I'm not sure where your facts about us "enslaving" most of Africa or Asia come from either. The fact that we have built a lasting union with many independent nations across the planet based on mutual friendship and ties? The Commonwealth arguably brought more people from across the world together than anything before it. I'm proud of being part of that.
markzob6k 2 years ago
"The people of this nation were among the first to speak out against slavery and abolish it. Isn't that something to be proud of?"
That is, but the mass enslavement isn't. Although there's a common misunderstanding about Wilberforce. He wanted the SALE of slaves banned, not slavery.
"I'm not sure where your facts about us "enslaving" most of Africa or Asia come from either."
Look at a map of the British Empire. Conquering, colonising, and taking taxes off a place is a form of enslavement.
BobMonkfish 2 years ago
I didn't mention Wilberforce at all. In the end the British were among the first to abolish it period, and I'm sure the freed slaves weren't worried too much about the true motives. I have a very good idea about the extent of the British Empries boundries thanks, and if you did you'd realise "Most of Africa and Asia" is more than an overstatement. We all pay taxes, it doesn't make us slaves... that's just a rediculous cynical view.
markzob6k 2 years ago
When you are taxed by a conquerer, that is a form of slavery.
The British Empire was a disgrace - like any other Empire. Wipe the blood off your hands, stop being British, and start being English!
BobMonkfish 2 years ago
Again, really don't agree there. You could quite easily argue that the Roman empire did some pretty disgraceful things, yet they are arguably the most influential civilization in the world. Even the language you speak comes from them in some form or another. Should I take responsibility for the War in Iraq as I'm British? Should I take responsibility for the creation of the concentration camp? All these things you will find are the work of a few people, not representative of the British people.
markzob6k 2 years ago
"All these things you will find are the work of a few people, not representative of the British people."
An Empire - any empire - is by definition barbaric. They are created by force.
"Should I take responsibility for the War in Iraq as I'm British?"
You should try and disown it, and make your voice heard. And I'd stop calling yourself British, and be English, Scottish or Welsh or whatever you really are.
BobMonkfish 2 years ago
Yet the independent former provinces of the British Empire overwhelmingly decided to retain close ties with Britain? And still we linger on the subject of empire, when Britain has contributed a considerable amount to the modern world not related to it.
markzob6k 2 years ago
"Yet the independent former provinces of the British Empire overwhelmingly decided to retain close ties with Britain?"
Their leadership sometimes does. But that's because they've all been shoved through an anglified education system to help them "think" the right way, and the colonies' economies were "reorientated" to benefit the mother country.
Of course, British "self-determination" is all one way. One rule for Gibraltar and the Falklands, another rule for Ireland and India.
BobMonkfish 2 years ago
Overwhelmingly they do chose to retain ties, not just now and again. Only middle eastern nations didn't. And to say it's because we forced British values upon them is also untrue. Take India for example... various great examples exist through out the British Colonial period of the disasters of trying to Anglicise the population. Indian culture remained pretty unchanged and intact throughout. Inevitably British culture supplanted native culture in many regions, but it was almost never forcefuly.
markzob6k 2 years ago
how much would it cost to put this on tv so that a few million people see it not just a few thousand?

Please take Tony Blair and Gordon Brown with you!
wembley05 3 years ago 3
who's blaming you for what happened 300 years ago? britain was united 300 years ago. gordon brown wouldnt get elected here, you might as well keep him.
scottishlad1987 2 years ago
The act of union was passed around 1606 for your info! The bill was passed in Scotland through your own house by your own lords and peers! No please take Gordon back! LOL!
wembley05 2 years ago
1707 actually. out of interest, have you ever been to scotland?
scottishlad1987 2 years ago
If Scotland and Wales are such a "burden" on England, give them independence, don't keep subsidising them.
Of course, the colonialist always claims to know better than the colonised.
