Hohner are pretty much the standard by which all other harps are measured, after all the harmonica was invented by Matthius Hohner. The new cheaper Hohners made in China will do for starters. C, A, and D are good ones to have. Guitar amps are what is usually used, but generally smaller is better as they distort sooner for the dirty blues sound. You will need a High impedance (Hi Z) mic to properly drive an amp.
Good luck, blues harp is a great instrument; easy to play, hard to play well.
You can pay anywhere from ten bucks to five or six hundred, beware, collecting is addictive and there are plenty beautiful vintage mics on ebay. Its nice to have a good one, but all said and done, technique will make far more of a difference to your sound than the mic you use. You can get a good sound out of a crap mic if you know how to use it and run your amp properly. Most Hi Z mics will have a quarter inch jack on them, same as your guitar, just plug em in!
Thanks for the post! I actually mess around with a few different ten hole diatonic harps. This one is a Huang Star Performer. I've had it so long, most of the chrome plating is worn off. It still has a great sound though.
please could you post the tab for this song...i've been searching the net for a week looking for this particular tune and i wasn't having much luck until now. i'd really appreciate it, thanks
The song is "I Got Love If You Want It" by Slim Harpo which you may already be aware of. Since my version is instrumental only, I've embellished it a little bit over the years to make it work better. Not sure if I'll have any time soon convert to tab. You should be able to find some tabs out there somewhere. Thanks for the interest!
Hey thanks, I'm working on a couple more tunes and will post soon. Now that I've figured out the u-tube upload thing, I can work on posting some polished material. Stay tuned...
very nice!!

hey, im looking to learn the harmonica, and i was wondering if you could suggest one to start with and that kind of stuff.
ps: for an electric harmonica, would an electric guitar amp work for amplification?
