There is no WELFARE, there is Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, that an adult may receive for up to 5 yrs in their lifetime. Women can have kids til 50. Getting that money, which is less than 1/3 of the amount of the poverty line, requires the parent to spend at least 30 hrs a wk in job training or work program. The entire government program cost $1.8 billion in 2009, the same price as 5 days of Afghan war.

Welfare is supposed to be short-term financial aid for people who are LOOKING FOR A JOB. For some people, it's a lifestyle choice. That's wrong. The reason why a lot of people hate welfare is because certain people take advantage of it. That's all well and good as long as there is hard work to do, but when you have 2000 people applying for a hotel job, there just isn't enough to go around. Welfare has its place, and as long as it is not abused it helps a lot of people in transitional stages - They are usually on for three to four months and then they get out and "work hard" at a job they find after they "work hard" just looking for a job.

I think that it should only be used to help give people a leg up to become productive members of society. That means they get needed help if they are bettering themselves. The biggest way to better oneself in this situation would be to be out there applying for jobs and doing some work to get a stable living arrangement. They could even do volunteer work to get references. There are already plenty of programs to get students the money they need to get by while earning a degree too

We all pay into welfare as a compulsory tax; not because we want to. I do not believe in the welfare system, but if I somehow mismanaged my finances (which I am VERY careful not to), I wouldn't be opposed to taking it.

Salamfall, you are misinformed. I hope you have learned more in the past year. There is no WELFARE, there is Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, that an adult may receive for up to 5 yrs in their lifetime. Women can have kids til 50. Getting that money, which is less than 1/3 of the amount of the poverty line, requires the parent to spend at least 30 hrs a wk in job training or work program. The entire government program cost $1.8 billion in 2009, the same price as 5 days of Afghan war.

I was on Welfare for 3 months back in 1990 and went out ,got 2 part time jobs and then welfare naturally reduced my cheque according to earnings and then when i scored my present fulltime job got off of it and never looked back. I have lived a success story from those days and appreciate the help at that time having to care for 2 children on my own.Thats the way the system is supposed to work. ;o)

I believe a sales tax is the best way for governments to collect revenue. It is a fair tax because those that can afford to spend a lot of money will contribute the most. That's all well and good as long as there is hard work to do, but when you have 2000 people applying for a hotel job, there just isn't enough to go around. Welfare has its place, and as long as it is not abused it helps a lot of people in transitional stages - They are usually on for three to four months and then they get out and "work hard" at a job they find after they "work hard" just looking for a job.

I think that it should only be used to help give people a leg up to become productive members of society. That means they get needed help if they are bettering themselves. The biggest way to better oneself in this situation would be to be out there applying for jobs and doing some work to get a stable living arrangement. They could even do volunteer work to get references. There are already plenty of programs to get students the money they need to get by while earning a degree too

In the usa working for wal-mart is doing fairly well.Those are the only jobs that are left after the jobs disappered into china slave wage market.

Most people on welfare have a physical/mental disability or have drug abuse problems. Many are lazy and refuse to work, but that is due to a poor upbringing. A smaller percentage work for cash and collect welfare at the same time (true abuse). The vast majority of welfare clients are white and tend not to attend the office. Most people collecting welfare don't deserve it. Check out the welfare office, full of morbidly obese Black women with 7 kids running around them and screaming at them while screaming at one of the 7 "baby daddy's" on her cellphone.

There's a two year limit for federal welfare, and a five year lifetime limit. You will still receive state welfare, but only if you have kids (to keep kids from starving due to their parent's stupidity or laziness). With only state welfare, you will remain in extreme poverty. The "welfare queen" is a myth.

A very, very small minority of people on welfare abuse it. It's not like some gateway to doing nothing the rest of your life. In actuality the government doesn't provide very much if you're on welfare. But that doesn't matter. Anyone who was on welfare should be the last person to talk about "spreading the wealth." Even if he needed it he still benefited from the government taking some rich person's hard-earned money and giving to someone else.

Joe took welfare because it was available. There is nothing wrong with wanting something; that is normal human behaviour. What is wrong is giving it! When Joe was working, they took money from him for welfare, so why wouldn't he take advatage of it went he could. That doesn't mean that he believes in the system.
There are charities out there for people who are needy. The reason welfare costs so much is the overhead associated with it.

Why does that make him a hypocrite or a piece of shit? When people are in trouble, they will seek out whatever help they can get; at least he's honest! He only accepted welfare because it was available; that doesn't mean that he believes there should be welfare.
We all pay into welfare as a compulsory tax; not because we want to. I do not believe in the welfare system, but if I somehow mismanaged my finances (which I am VERY careful not to), I wouldn't be opposed to taking it.

Here's my take on things. I started out in life feeling very dependent. As I worked on changing my thoughts, beliefs and actions, I often needed help along the way. Republicans stand on their soapboxes and tell everyone they shouldn't need welfare or anything else, but they're full of shit. They just don't want anyone dipping into their personal money supplies. Not everyone is born with a silver spoon in his mouth or able to catch an immediate break.

Sometimes I think Republicans have the attitude that "we only make money thru hard work and struggle, and so should you" but it's often a bunch of crap. That was my point. I would have picked on the Democrats too, but it's usually the Republicans whining about it.
I try to stay neutral (I voted for Bush twice -- wow) but Republicans have been getting on my nerves lately. The whining, arrogance and Obama hatred has been too much in such a short amount of time.

Democrats and Republicans are much more similar than they are different nowadays. They argue about how to carry out things that they have no business meddling in in the first place.
What role should the federal government have in issues like gay marriage, prayer in schools stem cell research,, etc? None. But these are the things they argue about.
