  • or if valve makes a map editor :DDD

  • I played this game when it first came out, enjoyed it and forgot about it. Watching this review has opened my mind up, I never even thought about all of this stuff, consciously although it was always there at the back of my mind, niggling away. This is one of the best reviews i've ever seen, thankyou.

  • i cant take it... i just cant take it. How does someone i watch weekly and know well..not personally, just die. hearing about African kids dying to drugs runners just doesn't have the same impact to me.

  • @emlmm88 Thats because African kids can't make good reviews.

  • @BladeStrikes well, they could. all people are different, im sure given the resources some could do great reviews and others couldn't

  • RIP man. you were a great reviewer.

  • I know it sounds REALLY homo but I wish I could have seen his face just once.

  • I played Portal 1 and i quite liked it. I think Valve(while creating both Portal 1 and 2) had in mind that they are making a game for average inteligent people(like you said you dont have to be a genious to solve the puzzles). Will play Portal 2 soon

  • He will be missed, I actually quite liked his reviews, can anyone recommend another good reviewer to fill this gap, asfm actually gave me incentive to play a bunch of new games I never would have touched.

  • @arizzi1000 Well, there's hotlesbianassassin, a good friend of fatman. Unfortunately, his channel is currently on hold, I don't know what's going to happen. And then there's the FunWithSexbad channel.

  • Did this guy really die? or is it some kind of joke.

  • @arizzi1000 It isn't a joke; he had a fatal heart attack on Wednesday. Most of his friends that he knew in real life and his family have confirmed it.

  • @Huskeyyyyy Pulmonary embolism is not a heart attack.

  • @rifleman1002 When the news first arrived, the messenger had said his cause of death was a heart attack. About two weeks later did we learn that he actually died of a pulmonary embolism, so Huskeyyyyy didn't know at the time of writing.

  • @FunWithSexbad Oh. Please don't regard that last comment as a smart ass one. even though it was...

  • 9:18

    Do not smell bacon.

  • Dat laugh...

  • lol ive heard the opposite from most other reviewers, the 1st and 3rd parts of the game were the best, and the 2nd was the worst :P

  • @mrroco300 most reviewers are terrible though

  • Your reviews are so fucking good!

  • Love your reviews. AND YOU LAUGHED!!!!! Shit my pants laughing when you laughed. Also, if you had reviewed the original portal what would you have given it?

  • i would have loved to see some thermal discouragement turrets! that would've made for some fun situations

  • Your reviews are really great and alot better than the shit on IGN or gamespot or other "bro" sites imo. I wish you got more views.

  • @MrBoBoTom Thanks, but I really don't do it for the views.

  • to be completely honest, I did not enjoy the co op much, I just couldn't get into it no matter how hard I tried to enjoy it, but that's just me

  • Sorry for the off topic but is there a chance you will review space marine

  • Love your reviews man. Incredibly detailed. I never realized how easy portal is until you mentioned how you need to find the white surface and that there is always a couple. Every review you have made I have agreed with you on. Keep up the good work.

  • Love the Laugh :D

  • You haven't even mentioned the white paint. It seems to me that it temporarily resolves the step by step puzzle solving that you hated.

  • @laifalbert Watch the whole review before commenting. I mention it and show video footage of it.

  • @antisocialfatman I did watch the entire thing, but it was mentioned in passing. You didn't really give an opinion about it specifically, just about paint as a whole. Did you think it solved the linear puzzle solving problem?

  • @laifalbert No, but it did improve it.

  • One thing not mentioned in the review, though not worked on more in the game is when some of your actions triggered song effects. The sunbeams had this synth sound, flying through the air had this bass and bouncing on the blue gel had this chime or something, I would have love to seen levels that music-up as you work in them.

  • Awesome review. Awhile back I bought this game and simply skipped the solo campaign entirely and jumped straight into coop, playing on splitscreen with my sister in person. By far the coolest gaming experience I have EVER had.

  • Also, I for one like your lengthy reviews. You put the time to good use by really deeply evaluating the game's mechanics and other facets (unlike another certain popular internet critic who shall remain unnamed lest he Googles himself and shows up here to protest).

I only wish that the two big games of this year that you chose to review after coming off of your hiatus were not ones I had already bought. Still, your reviews are a pleasure to watch, even if they're not useful as buyer's advice.

  • @QueenOliver Which reviewer would that be?

  • @Thegreatwario383 He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named

  • Excellent review fatman. Speaking personally I agree with your points on wasted potential and dumbed down difficulty, though they didn't drag down the single player for me nearly as much. If the industry regularly explored more imaginative concepts outside of indie developers then my standards might have been higher. A shame really.

However, you do an excellent job conveying the reasons for your opinions and you very solidly back up your arguments. Other critics should follow your example.

  • Thanks for spoiling Wheatley for me.

  • you promised to put the forum links (to the specific review) into the description.... you didn't

    liar!

  • you're certainly right about some issues..

but I think it's still the best singleplayer expecience I've had all year.

  • @Narutoinbleach

    Indeed!

  • Hey ASF. Don't you think that playing a game as a critic ruins it for you? After all you are spend most of the time looking for flaws, your critical mind might blind you from what there is to enjoy in the game. e.g.

To people that don't know about games, games are this wonderful world with rich stories, like interactive movies. To you and me games are pixels, polygons, shaders and sounds triggered by your actions, no such thing as AI just bunch of scripts.. Psychological perspective in effect.

  • @Diegog5 No, not at all. If anything it gives me an even greater appreciaton of the qualities a game possesses.

  • @antisocialfatman And the potential for adding is infinite.

  • @Diegog5

But even to those who see the technical, AI still exists.

Not everything is scripted. That just ain't true.

  • @LiamNeesonsDick

Technically AI (Artificial Intelligence) is not possible at the moment. A computer character can only do what it was design to do through scripts, it doesn't have intelligence nor can it learn or process new information. An NPC (non player Character) is just an animated object.

  • I understand your criticisms, but the problem is that Valve has to make this game accessible to as many people as they can. I cannot even begin to tell you how many people played Portal 2 without playing Portal 1, even though conventional wisdom says to play the original first, people bought it simply because it was popular, and if the game was geared towards only those who played Portal 1, it would suddenly become inaccessible to those newcomers.

  • @blahed1234 They don't *have* to; they choose to, and that is their failing.

  • @antisocialfatman You're right, but who is telling them otherwise? You would be surprised at the amount of people who struggle with Portal 2, and didn't find it easy at all... Hell, just ask the majority (apparently) of the Valve testers. I definitely agree with your review though, the game would have been much better if Valve were to tape some of the tester's mouths shut. On another subject, I really want to know what F-Stop was.

  • @blahed1234 Yeah, that's the problem. They are too concerned with focus groups. I suspect they had non-gamers testing Portal 1 & 2.

  • You hit the nail on the head. Portal 2 was a little off for fans of the original because Valve dumbed it down to reach a larger audience. A much different feel than Portal, which felt like an indie game for a niche market. There are some incredibly challenging mods out there however. I also really enjoyed the story and dialog in Portal 2 - it was fun discovering the backstory of Aperture and GLaDOS.

  • Very enjoyable as always:)

  • What did you think about the first Portal's challenge maps? It also seems that the white paint resolves in part the step by step puzzle solving you mentioned.

  • You're laugh was so well done that I think you may have potential in acting. Not that I think you wold like it.

  • I think the beginning tutorial levels are less to teach the player how to use portals again, and more to demonstrate the ruined nature of Aperture. Reinforcing the massive time jump between the two games.

  • I'm glad you mentioned how they re-used some of the old puzzles, that shit anoys me.

  • oh man, that laugh is legendary

  • I can't believe you did it again ASFM, this is exactly how I felt about the game. I especially agree about the developer commentary, you got to hear all the reasonings behind why it's so dumbed down because Valve was trying to make a game appeal to as many people as possible.

Portal 2 was designed for people who hadn't played Portal 1, that's why we get to replay the tutorial. It's kind of silly, but I suppose that it does make some sense. The episodes/bundle idea is neat though, could've workd

  • Gotta admit Portal 2's level design was worse than Portal's, despite (or because of?) the new elements. It was more linear and straightforward and the gimmicks always seemed to be used a few rooms in a row, then never again. I would have liked some more creative mixing there honestly. The co-op actually did it a little better and I didn't mind its lack of white paint as that was probably the weakest and messiest mechanic of the whole game.

  • You laughed in this review. HOLY SHIT

  • funny? how so many people LOVE this game....I think that shows its a GOOD GAME ....

  • @TotalGameMaster Argumentum ad populum.

  • Comment removed

  • @djkilldozer Why'd you remove the comment?

  • @antisocialfatman The comment said I couldn't picture you laughing, but towards the end of the video, you laughed making the comment useless.

  • @TotalGameMaster You realize he said it was an excellent game overall, right?

  • @TotalGameMaster funny? how so many people LOVE genocide....I think that shows its a GOOD PASTIME....

  • I face palmed

  • I face palmed

  • Portal 2 is crap compared to 1. It's more sub-Pixar 'crazay' character 'ghost train' Half Life 2 shit leading you down narrow ultra linear corridors, sometimes that look like actual real corridors, other times dressed up to look like open areas but with collision detection that takes no account of the scenery, but funnels you down narrow smooth paths. But people love Valve's peculiar brand of aggressively focus tested (and smothered in the process) anti-exploration, anti-gaming.

  • I have to disagree with you ASFM. I believe Portal was one of the best things to come out of the HL2 universe. And i think you believe Portal was ment to be a complete stand alone game. It was more of a test to see if people would like a puzzle only game. Because in HL2 there were alot of practical puzzles that the player had to go through. Portal 2 definitely adds alot to the story line to the portal series. As one reviewer on Metacritic said. "Portal 2's problem is Portal 1"

  • ah so you did eventually disover what I meant about glados.

  • lovely review, as always, although I do not agree with everything you said. I think you'll understand that Portal 2 couldn't begin where Portal left off without a tutorial. Portal 2 was a retail release and had a lot of marketing behind it, unlike Portal. This led to a lot of players who hadn't played the first game, and thus needed a tutorial. Of course we all would have liked it otherwise, but that's just not how these things work.

  • @JanEgbersNL I was going to counter that argument in my review, but it seemed like the solution was too obvious to bother: bundle Portal 1 with Portal 2. Problem solved.

  • Love this game and never found it just and one way street. You came in hating portal 1 and I came in not. I think there was a underline bitterness at the style. Try next time to ignore the paths and inbound the game. I found it funny, challenging, and overall one of the best games of the year.

  • Another good review, tho i dont feel inclined to go and get portel 2 now. Seems a bit of a missed oportunity for valve.

  • I also was not very impressed with the puzzles for the same reason: it's too obvious where you're supposed to place them. But it's still a very good game, and yes, the second third of the game is fantastic.

  • The asfm laughs!

  • what i dont understant is why there are no new levels made. Or evene better, why they didnt make a level editor. The co-op whas great but it was way too short, new content would make this game worth my money.

  • @kaspers2806 There are new chambers coming soon

  • 03:27 I thought we decided it wasn't a gun ;P

  • You're really downplaying the value of the narrative, Fatman. So godly.

  • *your intentions

  • Great review matey!

Oh the link at the bottom really isn't that big a deal; first world problems eh? :D

  • I found what you said about GlaDOS in Portal 2 to be untrue. And Portal 1 took me 3:30 hours to finish.

  • @gilgamesh310 Well, Valve explained in the developer commentary why she is the way I described, so you're disagreeing with the creators of the game.

As for needing 3 hours to finish Portal, that just makes you look like a mental.

  • @antisocialfatman What did Valve say about her? I liked how she became more humane and less sadistic. I consider that a nice development. If you didn't like her as much because of the fact that she was less sadistic then fair enough, but I don't see how I am contradicting anyone.

And forgive me if it takes me some time to think on some of the puzzes. It wasn't always the figuring out that stumped me either. It was being able to physically do some of the tasks properly, required a few attempts

  • For the record, he gave me a reason why he did it, I'm fine with that now, the thing that annoys me the most is when people just don't care. It's like, "Children are starving in Africa, care to make a donation?"

    "No"

    "Do you care?"

    "No fuck them."

I'm not going to do anything about it, I'm not going to spend all my money to help them, but I still fucking care, I still at the very least care that kids are dying of hunger. I'm happy with a reason why he isn't making the annotation shorter.

  • Now, can everyone please stop sending comments, all I asked was to not make a single annotation last 20 minutes when it takes 3 seconds to read it, how this turned into a 3 page discussion, I worry. And don't send me some smart alec response on WHY it did, and yes, I mad. Good job.

  • I hadn't played the first portal on encountering Portal 2. Funnily enough, the episode 1 Glados was my favourite character (though she was a bit lame in episodes 2 and 3, where the actress basically plays *herself* rather than the character). I also preferred the aesthetics and puzzle dynamics in episodes 1 and 3 over 2.

Totally agree about the non-existent difficulty. It's frustrating because I bet you could design some fiendishly hard puzzles using only the Portal 2 ingredients, if you tried.

  • @Neondarkness72 Right now you're the only one making a big fuss about the annotation. Your opinion doesn't equal everyone else's opinion, you know that, right?

The video wouldn't be any better without the annotation, in fact, it has nothing to do with it.

  • @Begeaux oh for fucks sake, I asked for one thing. Not to make a single fucking one sentence annotation last 20 fucking minutes. Read that again. One annotation, one sentance, 20 minutes. I never said my opinion was boss, I just said that out of every goddamn person to watch, I don't think many of them want to see a 20 minute annotation and would have to use that bit of effort to disable it, even though fatman could do it in a few seconds for everyone.

  • @Neondarkness72 I don't think "other people" need you to defend them from evil annotations. If other people don't like the annotation, they can remove it with one (!) click. You're assumption that most people have the feeling fatman stole one second of their time because they had to do that is vague, a pure guess. As a matter a of fact, I think for most people it's not a big deal clicking the x. Again, right now you're the only one making a fuss about it.

  • @Begeaux HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Right, I'm getting a little angry. I ask him to make this 20 minute annotation shorter, just to make life easier for everyone, to remove what little annoyance there is in removing it, I try to help make the video better with a small little detail, I try to HELP MAKE THE VIDEO JUST A LITTLE BIT BETTER! AND I GET FUCKING SWAMPED BY EVERY GODDAMN PERSON ON THIS FUCKING VIDEO! JESUS! I ASKED FOR ONE MINUSCULE THING! WHY IS EVERYONE UP MY ASS ABOUT OIRUETBNWIRSEBGIKASGSBED

  • @Neondarkness72 I think I see why asfm wanted to relocate discussion away from youtube to a separate forum. (Which, ironically, ...)

  • @AlephNeil HOLY SHIT ANOTHER ONE! You're not being an asshole right now though... I like the comment, don't get into this man, it's dangerous territory.

  • @Neondarkness72

hmm antisocialfatman, makes reviews regarding the quality of games, doesn't appreciate any criticisms about why his videos annotations are annoying... no one wants to see over 21 minutes of advertising, the option to turn that off is there but who in their right mind would want it? it's easier for people who don't want it(which will be 99.9%), for the other 0.1% who missed or for some odd reason want it covering the video can go back and look.

  • @AlephNeil word. ;)

  • @Neondarkness72 Why aren't we allowed to disagree with your opinion how to improve the video? You're intentions are good, I just don't agree with your argumentation and point at all. Ironically, you claim you do it for "everyone else", yet "everyone else" seems to disagree with you. I don't mean to embarrass you, just think about it. I'm going to stop now, you're definitely way too angry considering this is one of the most irrelevant discussions ever.

  • @Begeaux OH MY GOD! I asked for one small thing, look, can we just drop this whole damn thing? I left one comment, one, don't make 20 minute long annotations that obscure a small part of the video 20 minutes long. And I spawn this, can we just end this all, you're not a bad person, I don't hate you or anything, but this is just un fucking ridiculous.

  • Comment removed

  • @Neondarkness72

    No. We can't drop it.

    You're in too deep now.

  • @Neondarkness72 and you've got the moral high ground here? why are you complaining when you're whining like an idiot, if you cant click one button ( i.e. the X) and you're accusing the maker of lazyness then you are stupid.

  • @Doddorick When did I ever... fuck this, its 3am, and I was about to go to sleep when I get a comment from someone who revived a argument that lasted 4 pages was finally settled, why? Everyone was fine, we all tied up loose ends, and everything was fine. Read the first 4 or 5 pages of comments to see my reason, and that's all you need from me. I made one comment, and it spawned over 4 pages of anger. It's over. Go to bed. Sleep now my precious love, good god I wanna suck your cock so bad man...

  • Yay! :D

  • I feel you're being too difficult on the game's puzzles. It's fairly evident that it was aimed towards kids.

  • @Irandara

    No. It isn't.

  • it seems like your yelling into the mic its funny as hell!

  • @superlosia1234 You must live in quiet land if this is yelling, but I'm glad I amuse you.

  • @antisocialfatman why the fuck are you hating on this game? Its not that bad......

  • @TotalGameMaster By "hating" I assume you mean "recognising the game has flaws and pointing them out to the fanboys".

I *did* give the game my highest score. Did you happen to notice that? Or were you blinded by the red mist when someone dared to point out that Valve make mistakes?

  • @antisocialfatman you are doooomed to forever amuse us, Fatmannnnn!!!!

  • @superlosia1234 I've also noticed that. As if the reviewer was struggling to say it at all with end result of yelling. Good review btw.

  • good review!

  • You're a bit behind with your reviews, try doing some new games!

  • Did I really just write weather? Holy damn.

  • Also, please don't make annotations last for the entire video, it will just make me disable annotations faster.

  • @Neondarkness72 I expect people will just click to close it right away. I don't see it as a big deal at all.

  • @antisocialfatman They arn't, but think about it, you can choose weather to spend a minute of your time to make it last a few seconds, or make everyone else spend a few seconds to close it. How many people watch you're videos? Usually at least 1000. That's a lot of seconds.

  • @Neondarkness72 Yeah, I'm singlehandedly crippling the global economy in wasted manseconds.

  • @antisocialfatman You don't have to be a dick about it... I just was asking not to make annotations last 20 minutes. Is that such a horrible thing to ask for? Why are you acting like such a jerk with this hurtful sarcasm?

  • @Neondarkness72 You presented a silly argument, so I responded in kind.

  • @antisocialfatman What argument? I just asked to not make annotations last so long. And I said that all around, what you could spend barely a minute doing would save much more time that making everyone spent several seconds whenever they watch/rewatch the video. It's just annoying, like having to click the x on ads if you don't have addblocker. Is that so silly? "Hey, antisocialfatman, could you make make annotations last 20 minutes? It's a little annoying for everyone who watches your videos."

  • @Neondarkness72 The argument you just reiterated.

I watched the video myself after uploading it, and I too had to click off the anotation. It did not bother me enough to post a comment about it. In fact, in the time you've spent posting these comments you could click off a hundred anotations.

You have made your point. I don't see any reason for you to keep posting now. If more people complain, I may consider changing it.

  • @antisocialfatman just listen for a second, just because you don't find it that annoying, does that mean "fuck what everyone else thinks"? And I'm not wasting time posting these comments, I'm trying to explain something. What the hell is up with everyone on youtube not spending a single minute in order to make their video that little bit better? I mean, are you just that lazy? Anti social, fat, but now lazy? Fine with the first 2, but the 3rd is just... I thought highly of you until now but...

  • @Neondarkness72

You appear to be just as lazy.

Is it that hard to turn off annotations? Really?

  • @LiamNeesonsDick I did turn it off, I'm thinking for other people.

  • @Neondarkness72 Amusing that you adopt an argumentum ad populum position, yet you're the only person complaining.

As for laziness, the default length is a few seconds. I went out of my way to make sure it lasted the full duration of the video. I'm not lazy, I'm a dick.

  • @antisocialfatman STOP TAUNTING ME! Yes, ok, you're a dick. ATM, you're being a dick to me, so I can't complain when some one is a dick? "This guys a dick, I'm annoyed" I can't do that? BUT THANK FUCKING GOD you gave me a fucking reason why you did that. At least I have a goddamn reason now instead of just thinking you don't care about anyone, you did it on purpose. That's great. Brilliant.

  • @antisocialfatman Could you not* I meant.

  • OH GOD YES! Now Killing Floor. DO EEEEETTTTT!!!
