  • Whenever I spin on the sides, my poi goes inwards rather than straight like yours, will that make any difference?

  • I will kill your bird and dog!! thanx for video helped a lot

  • :/ im gettin it own easily enough, but im having trouble rotating them, like makeing them spin in different directions... gahhh! its so hard to explain without showing you, ill upload a vid response

  • Animals suck.

  • does he live in the jungle?

  • OMG you have evil birds O.O

  • 4:32 wasp

  • How many times have you said to a woman: "Want to mount Everest?"

  • I thought pterodactyls were extinct.

    PS: Great lesson!

  • Awesome! Your vids have helped me a lot!!! MUCH THANKS!!!

  • I can hardly hear you, darlin.

  • dude, you gotta do something about those pterodactyls

  • What is the point of this? I don't understand.

  • This is brilliant! Thank you!!

  • Fab! We used to do this as kids in the 70s by putting tennis balls in socks! LOL! xx

  • @suz8673 I'm 15 years old and I do the same thing. It's better than most of the cheap pois you can buy ;)

  • Thank you for posting these!! I agree that the noises in the background are loud.. but i CAN hear you good enough to enjoy and learn from. :D

  • People are so rude. Thank you for making this video. I could hear you perfectly fine. They are just upset that you can spin and they cannot. :P A lot of my friends are spinners and I wanted to suprise them by actually being able to do the basics. Thanks.

  • @Lycanakitteh ummm, no. i really like/appreciate these video's but it was really hard to hear. congrats on your super hearing

  • Thanks for this video, i just learned about poi when I was swinging some glow sticks on the end of some plastic string on July 4th when a friend told me what it was.

  • is there any special way to hold poi socks? :) like, the way that your fingers should look like and stuff

  • thank you so much for making these~!

  • i can't hear what he's sayin hald the time!

  • Oh my god, what kind of bird is that making that racket? XD I just decided to start learning this, and found your video so I'm going to use them to learn! :D Even if you're hard to hear, it'll still be plenty helpful, so ignore those complainers, haha. Glad you made these. :)

  • i cannot for the life of me get the damn pois behind me

  • i think you should update this video sir! you do make it look simple and thats good but its so hard to hear you.

  • Damn clothesline getting the way XD

The animals don't like you showing us your poi skills lol. XD

This is really cool =3 My friend does fire poi and it's got me interested in it. Not the fire poi! Just regular lol. Nice video =3 thank you

  • I love poi

  • I personally love the sound of the native Aussie animals in the background, yay for cockatoo's and kookabarra's :)

  • i have poi made from sock and maybe is a stupid question, but can you tell me, how long it must be? after watching your video I feel that my are too long ...

  • These are great. You're awesome.

  • orale carnal no te entiendo ni madres de lo que dises pero viendote me ayunda un chingo para aprender chido broder por subir estos videos para que la jente como yo aprenda este desmadre ;)

  • wooowww had to stop and say how much this videos are helping me....I'm a belly dancer and I have just bought some poi veil for me and no one in my city dances with them yet, s I'm learning by my self...and your lessons are helping a lot!! thanks!

    take care!

    kisses from Brazil

  • oh my what is killing what in the bac round, some foreign squawkie bird of some sort, it sounds evil, hope its not in all of them

  • hahaha, for a video on something simple that I can already do it was actually interesting to keep watching. Gonna spend the rest of the morning watching the rest. :D

  • I can't figure out how to keep my planes square. Any protips? It's especially bad on my non-dominant hand. Basically, when I do same-time spinning, my body is framed in a "V" instead of two vertical lines.

  • right... the only thing is, when i turn around the poi seem to want to spin in the same in the same way i was originally facing so i get a poi to my face or crotch...! how can i avoid this??

  • Yet another reason to get out of the house! :D

  • May I have the part of your brain that enables the coordination to do this without getting smacked in the head by a fly poi full of momentum?

  • i seriously loved this video but ended up not being able to pay attention at the end because I was laughing at the birds after the 5 minute mark.. you are awesome for being so thorough, it's much appreciated!

  • thank you

  • yout yard is so freakin beautiful :D

  • lol i always think if i try this i'll end up letting go and it will fly off my finger..lol

  • your house look awesome

  • hey i can can't master the split ime and am haveing trouble doing the weaves i'm a swimmer and a drummer do you have any tips ?.x

  • excellent, thanks heaps for posting all these - I thought I was quite good but it looks as though I have got a bit of tutorial watching to do! cheers x

  • despite all the bitching on this thread (like you can control animal noise), i think this is one of the best sock poi tutorials for newbies like me! thanks for posting!

  • Totally love this. I've been hoop dancing for quite some time, but having a hard time starting with poi. This is extremely helpful because it really takes everything to the very beginning. I keep trying to treat the poi like hoops, which is rather humorous because it's really not ending well. ^.^

  • What kind of poi are these practise poi? Did you make them yourself or where did you buy these?

  • I just wanted to say THANK YOU for posting this, it's most usefull and you're sweet. I find poi really exciting, but Inever had the chance to learn it - your video gave me just the help I needed. Cheers!

  • Thanks for starting easy dude...

  • This Was really helpful. I greatly appreciate it. Also, if we had bird like that around Boston I'd probably be afraid to go outside 0.O;;

  • These have been the most helpful video's on helping me learn to poi, thank you :-)

  • thank you...i am having a hard time with the stupid threading the needle thing...its supose to be a basic but its kinda killing me right now :( sad panda

  • Hi! :) I'm a hula hoopist and I've been looking into poi. How would one go about starting, as in materials? Some friend suggested starting glowsticking and the tennis ball nylon route?

  • Whats the appropriate lenght of poi?

  • @Vipassana1000 it should be from the tip of your finger to about your shoulder...give or take a little, but mostly you want to be able to control it.....there are some great vids on here on how to make your own poi as well, so check them out.....I made my practice poi for about 10 dollars and they work great.

  • @Vipassana1000 whatever length youre comfortable with, everyone has their own preferences

  • @eyekandy7 Yeah, I know. Check my newer videos for crap-free viewing, at least when it comes to lenses anyway.

  • @NathanielEverist Thanks mate ;)

    will check em out

  • @eyekandy7 Deal.

  • Great vid! I half expected a Velociraptor attack at any moment tho lol

  • dude i dont mean to be rude but damn I CANNOT HEAR YOU!!! The birds and the damn dogs are louder than u! please speak louder!

  • @SexiKittie Yeah, I know. So much background noise and bad camera mic, I'm thinking I'll probably remake all these old videos when I get a new camera.

  • @NathanielEverist Where do you buy your weed???

  • i just started watching your lessons and they're great

when i do this though i'm gonna use glowstrings

  • thanks for this, im making a set of poi for my juggling class for a final exam and i wanted to start trying it out anyway.

  • your great.

i like how you laugh at yourself.

    cheers

  • I just want to thank you for this video. I have a fire troupe of my own and allot of beginners can't make the scheduled weekly practice. I have been referring many people to your videos for basic poi and I have noticed vast improvements in their work. Thanks a bunch Nathaniel!!!

  • thats a good video of poi lessons, lol it sounds like somethin is gonna come swooping outta the air and take that guy to its nest ta eat him.. hahaha

  • please tell me what that squawking is! all the comments are cracking me up! thank you so much for this video though! i am just learning and this helps a lot. and yes, you have a great natural easy going presence on camera. you make me laugh! have a great day....

  • hot.

  • thanks for this video! there really are a lack of beginner videos out there and i'm glad i've found yours. can't wait to give it a try. too bad it's dark outside right now. hrmph

  • Just sayiing Hi again!

  • So I've gotten pretty decent at same and split time going forwards, and same time going backwards, but for whatever reason I just can't get split time to work backwards. Your hint of thinking of freestyle swimming is what helped me with forward, but thinking of backstroke throws me off when I try to go backwards. Any other hints you know to help?

  • The Jurassic Park remarks are HILARIOUS ... Thanks for making me laugh :-) ... My daughter has been getting into the lighted poi thing & she seems to love it ! ... Looks really neat in the dark ... It's harder than it looks too so great job for all those who are mastering this fun sport !

  • I cannot control my left hand. How to straight the Poi while swinging?Cause im right handed.I have full control with my right hand tough.

  • damn whats up with the birds?

  • Hehe Nice one. :D

Reminding me how much i miss circus club.

Is it really safe to be practicing next to Jurassic Park though?

    xxxxxxxxxxx

  • Jurassic Park LOL!

  • Jurassic Park LOL!

  • HAHAHA WTF

  • funny guy :D

  • lol the bird in the background

  • hehehehe kill that fucking dog too, sounds like a poodle

  • im having trouble keeping my left hand spinning straight, any tips?

  • this rocks! thank you!!! How long should you attempt poi before u dabble with FIRE POI ahahaha just master the moves then switch it up with chains? then master that and then light them ? ahahaha this is great thanks for posting these :D

  • Yeah, that's pretty much it. Get confident at the moves, they practice with the fire poi but not lit, then light them up, but only stick to what you're absolutely confident at. And the fire isn't as dangerous as you may think, but certainly have somebody nearby with a bucket at water when you're first learning.

  • @NathanielEverist thanks for the tips :) <3

  • @travelnkitten ya i know a guy who spins fire poi and will grab it lit with his armpit and let it chill there for a good few seconds before throwing it back into rotation. so long as u spin off b4 u light em, chances are u won't catch urself on fire. as for the length, until your confident in the moves your doing in the sense that your not hitting urself with them all the time. My take on fire is that's the treat to show off with, I mean you wanna look good when everyone's watching. lol.

  • @chaoticpyro13x kicking thank you! :D U guys rock! ;)

  • Can you maybe do a Playlist, so the lessons come right after another in the correct order?

    Greetings from germany! =)

  • it sounds like pterodactyls are attacking your dog, go check on him

  • @scarabin =))))) omg khah i'm coughing and laughing PTERODACTYLS!!! XD

  • Hi Nathan! I'm going to start watching all of your lessons. I can't believe how many you've posted! See you soon yes? Claire xx

  • *thread the needle. before someone corrects me.

  • Just started to learn poi today and it's pretty addictive. Learned butterfly, threading the needle and some over the head move (?) but I'll be trying to follow this video in the morning. Seems like a better place to start.

  • You make it look a lot easier than it is. I can't get it down it's ridiculous.

  • what's up in your back yard?some virgin sacrifice stuff?

I can never get bored watchin you do this, tryin to look sexy and all that :))

  • Yeah, sacrificing virgin's is great, drinking their blood keeps me young. And hey, I'm not trying, it comes naturally to me ; )

  • sweet i love this kinda stuff i can spin drumsticks and rifles pretty easy so im gonna move on and try poi. thanks for this. ill be watchin for more tutorials

  • Awesome man, I love rifle spinning, I think it's the best use for a gun yet.

  • haha yeh no joke.

  • when i spin them and then stop the poi are all twisted, is this meant tyo happen?

  • Where do you get poi?

  • I'd recommend making your own. Just put balls into the end of longish socks and you're away, or you can buy them from juggling stores, online, some toy stores etc, but socks are the best way to start.

  • Ahh well thanks!! =)

I find this stuff pretty interesting and I wanna learn howw

  • Thankyou for this :) I've been browsing videos trying to feel inspired to pick up my poi again and this has definitely helped! Really appreciate the tutorials :)

  • okay i started two hours ago and im really really stuck on how to do that spinny thing with both pois with your hands almost touching and it makes a kinda propeller thing, help any?

  • You training pois are uch different than mine o.o

I have two plastick balls on a cord...but yours look like stockings with sand in it...pretty cool :)

But how do you hold them I dont know how to hold my pois ( doin it for 2 days now q.q)

    thx!

  • If you've got poi with finger loops, you hold them through the finger loops. If not, you can warp the poi around the fingers and then pinch the poi between the thumb and knuckle of the index finger (how I do it), but I've seen people pinch it between other fingers too, so ultimately, so long as you're holding them comfortably and have control, it doesn't really matter.

  • Ah ok thank you!...

geez I thought Poi playing is easy but I only got the doubble Whindmill xDD

Even in the basics I always hit myself...

already hit my face so hard I got a blue eye q.q

and my group want me to be readdy till septembre for the firedance Q___Q

  • thank you thank thank you your split time explanation helped me so much

  • great tutorial. im trying to do this, but the poi balls keep banging in front of me. any advice?

  • So they're colliding in front of you? If so, go back to one at a time, and make sure the poi don't come in front of your body, but stay by your sides, then once that becomes natural go back to trying two, but I might need a bit more information to give a better response.

  • Your videos are great, and they're really helpful but uh...Do you live next to a damn torture zoo or something?! All the screeching in the background is a little distracting =)

  • I live in a torture zoo, that's it right next to me, I live there. I'm not the one who does all the torturing though obviously, because you can still hear the screeching even when I'm trying to make poi tutorials. I think my Mum was doing most of the torturing that day, because it sounds like birds and birds are Mum's favourite.

  • I think it's lovely that you're so in tune with what your mother likes. Many young men nowadays wouldn't know what their mom's favorite torture subject was. It's sweet, really.

  • What can I say? I'm a bit of a mumma's boy.

  • i found what you said really witting but i accidentally pressed thumbs down when i wanted to press thumbs up... i feel bad now :(

  • Hey, don't sweat it. I'm one of the few people on youtube that doesn't care about people giving me thumbs down. I am who I am, and if somebody doesn't like it, then I'm just not to their tastes, besides, every thumb down I get I just assume was meant to be a thumbs up. But thanks for the compliment, very much appreciated.

  • Well shit. I'm going to be crying myself to sleep for weeks now =(

  • Coming from a background using double swords this is very interesting.! Some moves come easily. Others require complete rewiring of my little brain. I'm enjoying the challenge. I also belly dance and know some dancers attach veils to their poi, call them 'voi' and go to it. ;p Double fun! More re-wiring!

  • Yeah, having a background in double swords will help, as swords require a lot of wrist rotation, which is useful for poi. Also, it's likely that you'll pretty much know how to do the weaves and such already. Good to hear you Belly dance too, I love Belly dancing but everybody laughs at me when I do it.

  • xD like your banging your girl <3

    i love that!!!

  • Or bangin' your guy. Times are a' changing, that kind of thing is becoming more and more popular these days.

  • ha ha true ^_^

i just started praciceing not too long ago,

your vids are actually quite helpful!

  • thank you my dear...thank you for taking your time and explaining it all :)

  • just bought some tennis balls and fishnets so i can start practicing before my poi are delivered. this and the next 3 tutorials got me into poi. i hope i can be as good as you one day

  • Thank you so much, Nathaniel! I am interested in learning poi hoop spinning and your beginner lesson is good for that as well. Once I master this lesson, I will look at your other videos, too. Again, thank you very much and happy spinning!

  • You're welcome. Glad to help/.

  • omg ty so much NathanielEverist i anna start glow stringing and fire poi and this is helping me lots!!!! tytyty if u have any tips for me oranything pm me plz ur awesome keep up the tuts =)) u =sub!

  • Tips? Too many to even get started on. Just practice lots and watch my videos ; P. Don't give up, keep practicing and what once seemed impossible will become second nature, seriously, poi really highlighted the benefits of practice to me. If you get stuck on any particular movement or have any questions, feel free to ask, I believe in interactive learning and provide it as best I can online.

  • ok ty so much btw i showed my friend tyler trevor and jason ur page they r ll doing poi wiht em cuz i ws at teh club oe nigt right n pp were like swinging round glow sticks in awesme ways makin desins and all sortsof fun stuff it was awesome so i decided iw anted t try so i practice it sock poi to then hopfully help me do glowstringing s ya me =sub my frinds will sub =)

  • When you're spinning the poi down by your hips, is it normal for them to start changing direction? I'm having a lot of trouble, especially with my left hand, keeping them spinning in a nice vertical line, they keep angling in toward my legs.

  • Yes it's normal, but it's not wanted. It'll get better with time and practice, if you want to make it easier to control then you should resort back to only one poi, and just get used to control it's tradjectory. Use your wrists and arms if it helps, and as you get better try and manipulate the poi with just your fingers and hand movements.

  • yes! this is my first day trying to spin poi, and i was trying to get a more fluid backward motion. my angle was a bit off, and then it just kind of snapped into place when you said it's like a come hither motion. yay! thanks for sharing your skills

  • thanks for these beginner tuts! i'm learning but all my friends are starting to take note and i dont want to have to teach EVERYONE how to play poi especially when i have no supernatural skills developed yet. anyway thanks!

  • No problem! Glad your friends are getting into it, spread the goodness that is poi.

  • LoL! This is so funny stoned!! good video to by the way :)

  • lol, thanks man.

  • Ummm Do you live in Jurassic Park?

  • good job man

  • om.. also I don't understand when you speaking it.

because my english skill is not good

but I will keep watch your videos things.

I want learn it to poi

    anyway Thanks for your video

  • I can do same time and split time, but I tend to find that, as I practice, my left poi starts to move towards my body and tries to spin in front of me. Is there something I'm doing/not doing, or is it something that fades with practice?

  • That's completely normal, over time you'll develop better control of your planes. Keep practicing, and it may help to focus your mind on your left hand and poi, and concentrate on keeping it within plane, without worrying too much about the right poi (I'm guessing you're right handed), or worrying about the two poi together, independent control of the right and left hands is something that will develop with time and is one of the greatest advantages of learning poi. Good luck.

  • Thanks

  • I noticed you're using sock poi but what kind of poi do you think is best to use for beginners?

  • Good question, but everybody's different. The longer the socks, the slower they'll be able to rotate, so that can help. Slightly elastic is helpful too, not too stretchy or they'll bounce around, just enough to be more forgiving on small movements. A Good idea for beginners, is to put your weight (be it a tennis ball or whatever) into a balled up sock, then put that balled up sock into your sock poi. The heads will be pretty big, but they'll be heavy, but very soft so it won't hurt. Good luck :)

  • Good vid thanks. Shame about the birds :)

  • Thank you, and I don't mind the birds so much, I like having them around really, I just wish they could be quiet during my videos.

  • hey man, thanks for posting the tutorials i've been looking everywhere for something like this.

Where bouts in Aus do you live??

  • No problem dude, yeah, there's a bit of a shortage of this stuff, but now a few more are starting to pop up on youtube. I live in Melbourne.

  • oh, nah i live in perth. Haveyou heard of any good places to buy equipement in perth or any good people to learn with?? thanx again 4 the tutes. they are awsum.

    thumbs up.

  • so i was looking at your video because i wanted to learn how to glowstick. i cant seem to twirl my left hand properly though. it's as if i have no control over my left hand whatsoever. it never swings straight but instead sideways, and its hard to keep it spinning. i also have to spin it really fast? and i cant spin it it slowly properly.

  • Go to one hand at a time, isolate your left and practice with it. Practice as much as you can, just twirl one hand with a poi whereever you go and it'll get good fast. As for the speed, you'll get that too, what may help is spinning normally, at the speed you can spin them at, and get a metronome to tap that beat out. Then decrease the metronome's speed slightly, and try and match it, and so on until you can go pretty slow. Hope this helps.

  • thanks! =D

  • This is a really great video, but I am still having a lot of trouble with anything in reverse. The forward motion came to me pretty easily, but whenever I try to reverse the motion, I just end up hitting myself in the leg. Something about the wrist motion (especially on the left hand) just doesn't work as well when I try to do it backwards.

  • If it's particularly the left hand with which there is the problem, then I'd recommend making yourself comfortable with it one hand at a time, starting with the left, practice and practice with each hand separately until they feel natural, then try to bring them together. I hope it helps.

  • Great! I have a friend who have poi's and i try it. But i think it is verry dificault. But it was great to do. You are really good. By the way, you have my friend on msn. ;)

  • How many hrs did you practice/week? Thx from a middle-aged admirer and poi spinning aspirant. Great tutorials--you seem to verbalize as much of the motions as possible; bet lots of us appreciate the amount of time you devote to filming the moves from different angles. Not too much and not too little (couldn't that sum up the art of poi spinning in general?) Where to find a nifty (linear/boring?!) list of all of your tutorials? Dang--did I just see that you've gotten into the 80s?

  • Hey man, my hours of practice a week has diminished, for a while I was just a moves junkie, learning as many moves as possible, without properly taking the time to explore them and my body, but I used to practice around 5 hours a day if not more. I'm glad you liked the tutorials, I didn't really put too much effort into the filming, as they're free, but hey, I try. There is a list of all my tutorials on the bulletins on my channel, but many of them are unmade. And yeah, I like some 80s= The Cure

  • just wanted to say thanks... ive been looking for basic poi instructional vids and yours are really helpful. ive been wanting to learn the art for ages so ive recently bought some fire poi but im really uncoordinated and cack hannded so im finding it really tricky.I just checked out some of your more advanced poi moves, WOW! how long has it taken you to be so good?

  • I'm glad I've been of help, that's what I'm here for, to help bring the enjoyment of this art to people. Don't worry about being uncoordinated, I've heard many people say the same, but after a shaky beginning, get used to it and are soon quite adept twirlers. It'll help your coordination and body awareness a great deal. As for the more advanced moves, I could do all of those at 7-8 months. I've learned some more advanced more than those, but have yet to make tutorials for them. Good luck.

  • i have just very recently bought myself some ribbon poi, with a long piece of cloth trailing behind the poi, i havent recieved them yet but i've been searching for instruction videos on where to start, and most basic videos for beginners (like yours) use sock poi, and i'm just wondering wether i have bought the right type of poi for a person who has never even held poi before ? or have i just flung myself in at the deep end without even realising it ?
