I am a bit confused, she's washing dishes with it but the pack has a picture of a frock on it?? is it for washing dishes or is it for clothes????? Maybe it's dual purpose?
Soaps and detergents were once marketed for both laundry and washing dishes. Dishwashing liquids for hand dishwashing didn't come out until the 1950's, and laundry detergents were no longer marketed for dishwashing use by the time enzymes and other stain removers were added in the late 1960's...enzyme detergents were known to be harsh on hands. Also, before the 1950's, most laundry products were soaps. Now it's mostly detergents.
Dreft was the first synthetic detergent developed in the U.S., in 1933. Procter & Gamble marketed it as a dishwashing detergent and as a detergent for fine fabrics until the late '50s. At one point it was pink ("looks like a lotion--makes water feel like a lotion"), but it was reformulated in 1962 as GERMASEPTIC Dreft ("better than boiling to help prevent diaper rash.") It has been considered a baby laundery detergent ever since.
Procter & Gamble, the makers of "Dreft", were already thinking about TV advertising, even in this early stage of "exploitation" in movie theaters. This ad really isn't so different from a 1951 "Dreft" commercial created for and seen on "THE BEULAH SHOW". The only slight difference was the jingle used- "No wash, no wipe, tonight!".
she best be in the kitchen! >:O

True, 'toby'. As late as 1952, Lever Brothers' "Silver Dust" was touted as the detergent with "wonder-bubble suds for laundry and dishes"...

Is this ad for real? Or is it a modern 1930's style ad satire?
visor109 1 year ago
@visor109 agreed, this does not look like something from the 1930s, seems too modern

20 or more years later, TV commercials were still pretty much the same thing - comparisons between the sponsor's product and the inferior "Brand X".
