This movie was released on July 5th, 1963. It relayed the upswing of what American society portrayed and believed in as far as loving neighbor and the
importance of sharing faith. It was a genuine movie. JFK was assassinated 4 months later, and the entire country changed after that.
my parents were watch hing this movie. i wished i watched it with them bc i came in right before this part and watched it. they has to return it to the library so maybe ill see it another time. my mom loves this song... i do too.
Ed Boon can be kind of a douche sometimes. The way he criticized that person for their letter... Who cares about the grammar and spelling, the guy complimented Ed and NRS. That's a hell of a way to repay a compliment....
@Meathook49 he didn't criticize him.... he just said that his writing didn't look like he was old enough to play MK. and then later he said that they don't KNOW if it is actually a child.
@lucymydog1995 It's still ignorant. As for that "easy chief" comment he makes, I hope he doesn't say that to a Native American person, or he's gonna get sued, and I'm gonna lol.
@Meathook49 any native american who sues someone because they say easy chief is a moron who deserves to be slapped. same with any other race and racial slur. its just a word, get over it :)
@windstorm1000 trust me, i know words can hurt. i have red hair and pale white skin. do you know how often i get called names? yeah. im just not going to go around and bitch about it, or sue because someone tells me to put on some sunscreen or something stupid. "easy chief" (what the argument was about) is a universal term that doesn't really even refer to natives.
To all of the fuckers complaining about MK DLC: It is neither Ed Boon's nor Netherealm's fault you don't have Kenshi. It was Microsoft's fuck up, so get your head out of your ass and deal with it.
Guys guys guys, must we bring the MK comments to this video just because Boon shared it with us? I think it's a wonderful scene and I don't know if I saw the movie yet or not but i'd sure love to
We pay like $300 for xbox, $60 for xbox live, $60 for mortal kombat and 1200 MSP for DLCs... how much must we pay befor shit starts to work??? this is why ppl are mad about this we have every right to be!
I was amazed to learn this movie was made in only two weeks. I wonder how they built the chapel (and the construction scenes) in only two weeks. Must have had a lot of people working on it...either that or I don't know much about construction LOL.
I love this movie, and Mr Poitier is a GIANT! However, for this sequence, we MUST acknowledge JESTER HAIRSTON who 'ghosted' (sung) "Amen" for Mr P because the star was tone deaf (Mr P was also 'ghosted' in other films including Band of Angels and Porgy & Bess). Sorry to blow Mr P's cover, but I am also a big fan of Marni Nixon (Hollywood's most famous "ghost" singer) and justice has to be done (smile).
I always watch this movie around Easter time. I absolutely love this song! One of my all time favorites! How can one not feel uplifted and full of joy after listening to this? AMEN!
Using the word "Amen" instead of "The End" to end this movie was an excellent decision. I do not think Hollywood would make a movie like this today. However, I'm glad it was made and am happy Sidney Poitier won an Oscar, even if he did win over Paul Newman in "Hud."
after he sing "see the baby" and then this body language and the look in the camera is just lovely, love this movie i think it's my all time favorite blackwhite movie.
im so sad i dont saw that in the cinema when he cames out :'(
@AHighPwner - well may I suggest you watch this amazing movie then! America was very different once. You could watch it together and talk after it's over...
I watched this movie about 20 years ago (I was 8 or 9) on TV...All I remember was that I was crying like a baby during this song, I remembered: Amen-Amen-Amen, black man and that he was walking in this scene..nothing else;) Since that time I was trying to found it. This song crossed my mind several time...and today I found it and it's one of the most exciting moment of my life... powerfull internet !!!
That was a real chapel they built for the movie by the way, and right after fiming wrapped they had to tear it down because it was filmed on private land and they promised the owner it would be gone. What a fool, that thing could have still been standing and meant a lot to people.
I`m an old fart and they use to play this movie to us kids in the gymnasium when I was in the 1st and 2nd grades in the 1960`s and I remember distinctly not once ever thinking it was a black guy around white nuns but thinking how nice he was as a man to do all those things for those nuns. It taught me later on that only adults judge people by race because of fear which is the true opposite of love, not hate, and that the true richness in life is gained by what we do for others.
I was only 5 or 6 but I remember this movie because of the music and the fact that a black man was the lead actor. Danzel Washington credits Poirtier for opening up the lead roles to Blacks and getting Hollywood to open their minds. I loved the movie To Serve With Love as well. Poirtier is truley a great Actor!
@LilBlitz116 Thank you for the correction. Here is the link for you. Also my English brother-in-law lived in the East End of London in 1991 and I was able to visit it several times.

@sportsbra I shall. This will be my song for the day that all people be free and recognized as members of the human family. So, we can sing with glory, amen!
@nagib1967 My mother went with us children two hours by bus to the Kurfürstendamm in 1969 to show us the film in original version because we all loved it and Sidney Poitier so much. Those were the days...
My mom used to sing this song to me when I was a kid, at least what she could remember of it. Thank you for putting it on youtube. It's a great memory.
JESTER HAIRSTON? I am always dazzled by the fact that somehow that amazing man was THE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER at my very humble (St. Monica's) high school graduation! Picture Santa Monica, Califronia, late May (or perhaps early June?) 1973, and we're inside the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, site of some very memorable Oscar events in years past.
A grand piano was on hand, and Mr. Hairston played "Amen" and probably several others during his address.
Does anyone know where I can get a copy of Jester Hairston singing this? Preferably this particular version or similar? I've heard some of the remakes and I'm not quite as fond.
Sidney Poitier is an awesome actor. I think he won an academy award for this film (Lilies of the Field). This song is really wonderful, and a true "testament" to his fine acting skill.
No, Hattie McDaniels was the first black person to win an Oscar for her performance in Gone With The Wind in 1939. Sidney Poitier was the first black person to win Best Actor.
@milkypirate99 He was the first black person to win an Oscar for 'it', as that would refer to this movie, specifically. Hehehe... I get you're point though.
This is one of those few films that you can literally call a work of art. Not many out there. It has absolutely no pretention about it, just a story in the most direct form like a Hemmingway novel.
milkypirate99 i love this song. i never knew it to be a movie. thanks for posting. it's thrilling to hear the song. wish they'd make more movies like this.
This movie is an old favorite of my family's! Thanks for posting this video!

Sidney Poitier is an awesome actor. I think he won an academy award for this film (Lilies of the Field). This song is really wonderful, and a true "testament" to his fine acting skill.

he did win an oscar for it....he was actually the first black person to do so

No, Hattie McDaniels was the first black person to win an Oscar for her performance in Gone With The Wind in 1939. Sidney Poitier was the first black person to win Best Actor.

@milkypirate99 He was the first black person to win an Oscar for 'it', as that would refer to this movie, specifically. Hehehe... I get you're point though.

This is one of those few films that you can literally call a work of art. Not many out there. It has absolutely no pretention about it, just a story in the most direct form like a Hemmingway novel.
