When I was a student a cycled to school in the warm summers of 30 degrease Celsius, in the rainy weathers with the umbrella in my hands and in the cold snowy winters of -10 degrease Celsius!
This is what America should have. It's a shame to see related videos of bikes being run over and angry drivers. This video makes me want to live in the Netherlands.
@anakperelih I commute 24km each way in sub-tropical Sydney... I choose to take my shower at work instead of home, which leaves me fresher & more invigorated than others.
@anakperelih I agree some situations are more challenging - but a person can start at 0% and work towards 100%, even if they never reach it. When the mind is open, a lot can happen.
I started with zero fitness, and within months managed multi-hour rides in 35 degrees & high humidity - the body can adapt. Also, a shower is a shower, regardless of how hot you got beforehand. How did people manage anything before the 1960's when car obsession began?...
@uniquedin when it rails, you get wet and when it is freezing, it's adviced for the people with fragile bones or poor reflexes to use the public transportation, or the car ofcourse.
@ptuku Cycling is a great way to improve reflexes, build better bones, and generally improve health. It will still rain on you if you don't cycle, so it's best to embrace nature and get all the health benefits. Of course, it's a good idea to be extra careful in the rain - as it is for all people, regardless of how they get around.
@baljeetd I said rain is worse than freezing weather imo. (I don't have to sit in the class with uncomfy wet trousers and about those fragile bones; the tend to lose their strength after so many years (there are many older people cycling here) and about those reflexes... you don't want to know how many people I've seen going down by ice, without even putting their foot on the ground like they intended to lie down, very fast. xD
(fortunately they fall on their side and not their head)
@ptuku Yes, rain & ice are treacherous, more so for a bike. One needs to slow down & be extra careful cornering & braking. But the situation is probably worst for the Danes & the Dutch for example - and they seem to manage fine... There is a saying "there is no bad weather, just bad clothing"...
I remember when I was last in Amsterdam 11 years ago and people didn't even need to lock their bikes up because there was no theft. American cities aren't built for biking! What a shame!
Great video! When I studied in Berlin for 5 months I made a trip to Amsterdam for a long weekend and thoroughly enjoyed cycling all around the city, such a fantastic lifestyle!
Wow, extremely well made video. Proud to be Dutch and cyclist! Hope this inspires governments and people around the world to be less car-centric and healthier, smarter and richer while feeling great. Thanks.
@uniquedin My grandma used to say when I did not want to go out in the rain: you are not made of sugar :)
When it is raining, you put on a rain jacket. When it is freezing, you put on gloves and cycle a bit faster. I cycled to school all my life, 6 miles to get there in the morning and 6 miles back in the afternoon. No matter whether it was freezing, raining, snowing or what. It's just a mindset to think that you cannot cycle if weather is not perfect.
Superb - Utopia captured on film finally. Long live the Dutch Cycling Embassy and all power to the Cycling Embassy of Great Britain. I want what they've got!
Enough of the these wonderful, beautiful, eye opening, dream makeing, veiws of free people videos.. I already hate the United States enough...
Of my five transportation bicycles, one is a high end Dutch city bike and the other is a bakfiets (cargo bike, the kind that can carry 5 children or 250 pounds of what ever).. I no longer ride in anything but normal clothes. I ride around singing and smiling at all the pretty women on bikes....

I wish Australia was a bit more like this. The attitude held by most motorists towards cyclists is disgusting.
