I would venture to say that Byrne learned from Belew. He is playing Belewish lines in Stop Making Sense just a few years later when Belew was gone and he was the showy guitarist of the band.
16 yo and one of my first concerts..fascinating by one band who mixed noise, music and an incredible live at the same time..unique in 1980..and at that time italian state tv was still airing live music...sigh
...and yes finally Tina....we all wanted to marry her ....once in the lifetime....
I am lucky enough to have seen Belew in concert twice this last decade with King Crimson, and each time, and every time I see him in video, at how great a performer he is in addition to his talent with the guitar.
@java7686 He played on Zappas "Sheik Yerbouti" album...another classic. PS thanks tpatgod for posting this ..Talking Heads at their finest. ***** 5 Stars !
Talking Heads are so unique and unlike anyone else and for some strange reason they strike the perfect chord for me. This is music that you can just listen to by yourself and it does not matter if others are not into it.
Adrian Belew's electric guitar during the coda is eerie. David Byrne is probably the best ryhtm guitarist of his generation. I still don't know how he manufactured many of his extraordinary guitar sounds. Part 2 from the 1982 live album The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads has recordings from 1980-81 Remain In Light Tour. The 2004 CD release of it includes all the songs played during that tour. If you like this clip, then I suggest that you get the CD.
@DerKosmonaut1972 Reading some of the comments on this song, and I couldn't agree with you more. I have the original "Name of this band.." on vinyl, and part 2 of this album just blows me away. It's the best live album I've ever heard , and that includes "Stop Making Sense", which kinda gave Talking Heads a new fanbase. The re-released CD is also on a par with the original vinyl. Well said my friend.
i have a 48 minute concert dvd of the talking heads with this line up from germany 1980 show that is great. adrien belew wails on his guitar big time. video quality blows this away. if you have an interest please send me a message via youtube for information on this and many other hard to get cool concert dvd's (more)
The buildup in the Studio version of this song, with the rifts building then kicking out, then again, then again, with Tina's baseline thumping away still is one of the unique/great rock/new wave tunes. Play it LOUD.
i like that shot of adrian belew shaking the shaker thing in front of his face. its almost like a surreal thing
another comment:
the beginning of this song sounds like franz ferdinand. i wonder if they developed their style based off of the first 30 seconds of this song. that would be pretty funny.
How can this song possibly be this good? When Frantz lays into his snare with that single stroke roll about 2/3 through and Belew comes in with that melody and Tinas bass line somehow sounds even better than it did 5 seconds before... goosebumps. Gah!
i saw your comment on the talking heads live in rome clip and i thought you might have an interest in that i have a 48 minute concert dvd of the talking heads with this line up from germany 1980 that is great. video quality blows this away. if you have an interest please send me a message via youtube for information on this and many other hard to get cool concert dvd's (more)

This Belew character is amazing.

Brilliant and weird - could be the soundtrack to a 1,000 lives. An anthem to the Talking Heads and a taste of what followed on Remain In light.

Adoro come Tina guarda Adrien durante l'assolo. Lo sguardo comunica: "ma come fa a tirar fuori sti suoni da un chitarra??!"
I love how Linda looks Adrien while he plays the guitar solo. She is probably thinking "how can this guy produce this sound from a guitar??!"
