I went to a Poetry/Community Event @ a local Nation of Islam Mosque here in Chicago. Fred Hampton's widow and son ((with whom she was pregnant when he was assassinated)) were there. It was nice seeing them uplifted my night!
I'm taking an AP U.S. History class in High School right now, it's ridiculous, my teacher has no idea who Fred Hampton was, then I told her the story of how he dies, and she said do you really believe that? He just advocated murder. I don't agree with that. While I don't condone cops murdering citizens, I also disagree with people organizing meetings to talk about killing others, which is exactly what I just saw right before 5:00. It doesn't come as a surprise to me that after talking about blowing "pigs" away, his group got some infamy and some unwanted attention.
As I said before, this does not warrant murder, but I'm not surprised. Disappointed, yes. Surprised, not really.

I agree with dal4018. Huge difference between "murder" and self-defense. I'd recommend Ward Churchill's Pacifism as Pathology. Self-defense is a fundamental right systematically and historically denied to oppressed people, and pacifism, when touted as the only solution, is a means of reinforcing privilege. Fred Hampton was a righteous visionary.

ONeal would provide the FBI and Chicago Police Department with a sketch of Hamptons apartment. This culminated in a police raid where both Hampton and fellow Panther Mark Clark were killed. ONeal was subsequently paid a bonus of three hundred dollars for his information. William O'Neal returned to Maywood, IL and committed suicide two decades later by walking onto the Eisenhower Expressway and was hit by a truck.

The evening of December 3rd,, O'neal was responsible for preparing the meal for the Panhters residing at the Monroe St. address. He placed barbituates in the punch that he prepared with that meal that rendered the Black Panthers into a nearly full state of unconsciousness. In fact, Fred Hampton's mother had placed a call to the residence that evening. Fred Hampton spoke to his mother and passed in out in mid-conversation.

I'm all for revolution--the way the old black panthers were, or Martin Luther king Jr, but the new Black panther party(don't even feel right calling them that because they are are pretty much a disgrace to what the Real ones stood for)are terrible. He was shot down and as he was losing his own life all he could think about was protecting my Aunt who was pregnant with his child at the time.
