A straight woman, my professor stated that the feminine was perceived to be artificially constructed & defined by men for the purpose of subjugation of women. Her notions were that lesbians operate w/in that value system of hegemonic masculinity, and that rather than challenging the value system, they are operating within it. Her feeling was that hetero males who have traditionally feminine qualitties are diminished & marginalized in society, as are non-traditional women...
Back in the late 90s, my last year in college, I took a course on sociology of gender. My professor & I spent hours talking into the early morning hours. Her view was that masculinity was valorized in our society, and was synonymous with power...thus the term "hegemonic masculinity" meaning that this form of gender expression was valued over the feminine, and that lesbians internalized these feelings and therefore felt disdain toward their own gender--equating femininity to weakness...
I'm a tom boi and i don't seem to be wanted by butches/femmes/studs/ftms....where i'm from u have to either be REAL butch or REAL femme to be someone's type...which i think SUCKS!
@triniLes20 For me its the complete opposite...=[ I consider myself "REAL" Butch/TG but all these femmes want is the tombois....I say we take a vacay to each other's area =] lol
@newera88 wow really??? lol.....hmm,well in the current situation i'm in.... (my personality is more femme than any femme i knw,i jus look buff and tom boi-ish, but i'm a hott femme wen it comes to dressin up for wrk :-D), my gf....gets confused, she's femme....my personality draws her in but how i look turns her of... dude....it's beyond messed up lol
the dyke community isnt going anywhere as long as the LGB community still includes the trans people we will all go on with our lives... i am a trans guy but i love lesbians, those are the only people i really feel that i can relate to, even though i identify as male.
i got called butch by lesbians that didnt even know me. they made feel like an old time bull dyke when i was a radical lesbian . it hurt like hell to have lesbians judging and ostrosizing me for something that wasnt true. i hated role playing then as much as they did. it was awful to have women who stayed away from me suddenly say" youre so different then i thought you were. i thought you were a thug." by this point id be in tears and full of self hatred. so much for sisterhood
Fuckem if they don't get it. You feel powerful when you belittle others. You should feel sorry for them. One day they'll look different to the lesbos that are to come.
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed. I might record another clip or 2 from this well done documentary. The entire program is about 80-90 minutes long. Keep watching! - J.
My goal in uploading this video was to contrast two different yet similar female-bodied presentations of masculinity. I think a lot of valid points are raised throughout. Thanks for watching! Hopefully one day we will all celebrate each other's individuality and gender expressions. - J.
2:25 to 2:45...be more condescending, would you?
