The mastery is visible not from dynamics, intonation etc. in this video because it's a tiny handheld camera video in a super-dry classroom full of people. ON AN FLV ENCODING ON YOUTUBE. Terrible, terrible encoding.
You hear the mastery in the perfect consistency of his tone-stream or air-stream even at what is - again, given the size of room and resolution of camera and flv - a very low dynamic level. Total flexibility. He's just talking, with a horn.
@ilovefurries100 hate to break it to you, but you need to listen to more music, he's doing very subtle things that make it musical, like rubato and he actually is doing dynamics, you can't hear not because you don't have the ability to, you just don't have the musical experience yet to fully hear it
@ilovefurries100 lol I don't judge how good of a player is based on how the intonation is effected by vibrato, I judge based on musicality and tone production as it should be. If you are sitting down staring at the tuner seeing how in tune he can play, you seem to be missing the point of music.
@ilovefurries100 Along with what littledrewboo said, you can't judge his sound by this video. I doubt this is the best sound quality available, so he's bound to sound different that he would live.
Super man. Met him in 96 when I got to be a judges aid for a Dixie Classics event. I have a musical shrine dedicated to him, Roger Behrend, and some others at home lol.

What a priceless quote, and he indeed sounded amazing in this clip. A beautiful, dark, velvety sound along with great, impeccable technique... I don't think you could find a better teacher/performer than this man. There are other great performers too, but Dr. Bowman is on another whole level of communicating a message to his listeners. He is the epitome of a great musician.
I play baritone and im one of the best players in my class but this, out of most of the pieces ive heard, this is AMAZING

No dynamic difference at all.

@ilovefurries100 It doesnt have to have crazy dynamics to be beautiful, you can hear the vibrant emotion through his playing.

@littledrewboo Maybe,,, but he ruins it with his really flat vibrato. Try this video with a tuner and see!

Beautiful sound a wonderful vibrato. Dr. Bowman is also an outstanding teacher and an inspiration to all euphonium players.
