  • If I didn't live on the other side of the country (NY), I would definitely come to see the great Ragtime pianists of the world in California!

  • Have you heard of Big Bang in Iowa?

  • You are an odd-ball ron. but in a good way. your enthusiasm towards ragtime music helped a lot of people to learn about ragtime and become fans themselves, i am one who now in love with ragtime and basically listening to an assortment of rags from this era and the 1900 and lower era. one thing that saddens me is that i might not be able to get to any festivals. i live in Canada, more pacifically Ontario, and not aware of any festivals.. i would love to know if there is any here, thank you. :3

  • @Sandstormsify Closest festival to you that I can think of is a small but popular one in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, which happens in January. Yeah, in January. Look in my Favorites for a video called something like "Ice Piano Entertainer" to see some of the shenanigans they got up to this year, playing an outdoor piano in sub-freezing temperatures.

  • I can echo your frustration at "no one being able to write music." I've seen some pretty poorly transcribed scores, even some that had no key signature and just added every single accidental where they occured. Disgusting!

  • @Pianoflage Yes, there's one I wanted to work on yesterday (and would have if it hadn't been for the reddit situation!) where the existing transcription has no key signature but the tune is in D-flat Major! Ugh!

  • For all you video gamers, I recommend checking out Tom's sight read of the Legend of Zelda ending theme. I discovered ragtime a while ago through searching for video game music on YouTube, and in my opinion that is the most astonishing piece of sight reading/embellishing I've ever seen.

  • Hi Keeper1st :)

I'm plasticmouse, from Reddit. I unleashed the Reddit beast on you when I posted in the late hours of yesterday. I'm super stoked that the video has taken off, and that you and Tom are getting the recognition you deserve. Thanks so much for this video; very decent of you. I hope Tom gets a kick out of all of this.

  • @AJRichardson1981 Ah hah! So you're to blame! Heheh. Bad timing as I'll be gone for four days and unable to keep my inbox clear... But good timing in that it sounds like some folks might come check out the festival this weekend.

  • I like VGM and ragtime. I'd really like to hear some Sonic tunes, but I don't think any of them would be classed as ragtime. Some of them are a bit funky or jazzy, but I am music-illiterate so that's just a guess. A lot of old shoot-em-ups have amazing music. Something like Gradius might work well for Brier-isation.

  • @shaurz If you haven't already, look up Keeper's video "Sonic the Hedgehog Gumball Rag". Tom plays the song numerous times adding more and more to it with each play-through.

  • I want that poster.

  • @delti90 You can get one now! See Paul Rugg's blog. Search "Froynlaven" in Google and his Blogspot blog should turn up. He has a few of them which he will give to people who donate to his favorite charity.

  • the Monsters Inc theme can be good as ragtime

  • Congratulations on the new subscribers! (I just saw what you were talking about on the front page of it). I didn't know that you were so dependant on suggestions, so I'll try and think up something! Also, wish I was at that festival too... Can't wait to see the videos you get from it :-).

  • Has Tom heard the version of the Air Platform theme from the game? What did he think of his performance by comparison?

  • hero

  • What is Tom's opinion on these game tunes? Does he think they're fun to play?

  • @zombiesecurity You can kinda gauge how much fun he's having by how long he extends the endings and how much he laughs at the end or comments. At the end of the K.K. Ragtime sight-read you hear him exclaim, "Oh, that's cute!" or at the end of the Yoshi's Island Athletic Theme, "That's a lot of fun!" Both of those tunes he not only played again of his own volition, but with the entire Raspberry Jam Band.

  • Third Man Theme!

Just blurt it out at the festival ad I'm sure somebody will know it.

  • More Zelda!

  • I'm so glad that you and Tom are getting more exposure! I found my way to your channel a few days ago when I had K.K. Ragtime stuck in my head and wanted to look up K.K. Slider's "live!" Luckily for me, Tom's performance is the first thing that pops up on YouTube.

Now, a question! What's your process of transcribing new pieces, a la the K.K. Ragtime tune? Do you play by ear, then actually write it on sheet music? Find existing material, then edit? Thanks! =)

  • @aTOH If at all possible, I look for someone's attempted transcription and use it as a base, comparing it to the original recording and making corrections as I go along putting down in a readable form (most VG sheets are in the wrong time and/or key signature, spell accidentals wrong, and have oversimplified left hand). For K.K. Ragtime and some others like Humoresque of a Little Dog, I transcribed myself entirely.

  • I always loved ragtime. But being a video gamer, to find video game ragtime was an extra bonus.

  • Oatacon!?!?

  • Redditor here: You're great, keep up the good work.

Would you do some Chrono Trigger music? It's not ragtime but it's amazing.

  • I recommend you play Mario Galaxy for the Wii. The music is amazing! I'm sure you can find some Ragtime in there. Also the gameplay is unique and mind blowing and fun!

  • @Samiam84 There are some cool ragtime pieces in Wii Party and Wii Play Motion that I'd like to transcribe sometime. My wife and I don't really do the platform type games, though I did play Epic Mickey (still need to continue where I left off though!). Back on the C64, I played a lot of Jumpman, Jumpman Jr. and Lode Runner... and of course spent a fortune on Donkey Kong in the arcades.

  • Tell Tom!

  • You should definitely do a playlist of the most important videos on this channel you'd like your new subscribers to watch. Little bit of this, little bit of that- type of thing.

    Keeper1st summed up.

Yeah? 718 videos is a little intimidating to sift through...

  • boom, baby.

  • I actually found this channel because of the videogame covers, but after that it opened me up to more ragtime music. I can safely say I'm definitely a fan of ragtime music now.

  • @princessyaoi185 Excellent. That was one of the reasons I decided to show Tom some of these tunes. Most ragtime fans don't know of these rags from VG tracks, and there are gamers who don't know of ragtime outside of VG tracks. So it has been nice to introduce both sides to new music.
