I am draining because the brief hot water I used to get is now luke warm....My pilot goes out constantly....I changed thermocouple, but no luck. Maybe the burner is encrusted with crap.....Sounds like the flame struggles when it's on.......Any suggestions????
Thanks so much for this video. I have a home with 2 showers and the one closest to the boiler, the hot water would stop coming out. after about two minutes. I replaced the center cartridge 2 years ago but I have never flushed the boiler, it worked fine but now I think I need to replace the center cartridge again. Will a dirty boiler cause this to happen? Thanks
Thanks for this very helpful video. I just purchased a home that has been vacant for 6 months and the water is nasty. The most informative part of this video is where you issue the warning about not opening the drain valve too quickly to avoid stirring the tank. Thank you SO much for posting this.
Backyardman, very good video. The diagrams were clear. Looking up more of your videos. I'm making a solar water heater right now and will be open for any helpful info.
Don not shut off the cold water supply. You will be using the pressure and flow of the cold water to do the work for you. If you do shut it off, there will be nothing to force the dirt out.
This helped me out. Sure it's simple. But a video is worth a 1,000 words. And this is very helpful to those of us who spend way too much time in an office (or at home surfing YouTube).
One additional precaution I took was to wear rubber gloves as I attached the hose and opened the valve. Unless the hose fits well, some hot water could spurt or drip out.
...just did, once agin i truly appreciate you giving me a vidual idea od how to flush my heater. water was brown, knew id get to the bottom of it. internet rocks...how the hell did we live without it?
so u shut of the water too or u leave the water on as the tank drains?

You don't talk about opening up the relief valve. Is this not needed with this method?

Not sure what you mean by center cartridge? Temperature control or dip tube?

All these videos are good but I wish one would actually show it happening so we could see (and hear) what the sediment looks like. Just a thought.

What side do you put the vacuum relief valve, on the hot or cold side????

So I don't have to shut off the cold water when flushing, right?

Thanks a bunch.
You should do a video on how to install a typical water heater.
Thanks again.

Glad to hear the video helped. As for the gloves, safety is always number one priority and a good move on your part.
