It's a crying shame that the person responsible for the three deaths that resulted only got 25 years for this. 25 years what a shame! Three Lives that can never be brought back and they get 25 years what the hell was that judge or jury thinking?

Remember the next time you guys go to a search and rescue drill. Listen to how much BS the chief will talk and how much formality is spoken as if they are taking an interview. When your life is at risk, who cares if "proper" radio communications is spoken. "Get me the f%$k out of here. I'm on the fifth floor." Too much announcing who is talking and who is receiving. Typical chief's interview command talk.
some one should beat that commander in the mouth with his damned mic!!! i sont know why someone didnt yell across the main line for him to shut the &$%@ UP!!!
Wow, this was touching. But I am frustrated at the same time. Why is it, that in this day an age radio communication quality is the same as it was in WWII?
Why is it that my cell phone has the ability to locate my friends cell phones with in METERS on a detailed world map, yet there is no technology in place to keep track of location of FF in a BURNING BUILDING?! Im I missing something?
@beatchildproductions ... The technology to do this does exist, but it is very expensive and not all departments can afford it. There is a module that is built into a firefighters PASS alarm that will report it's location back to a computer system that can show on a map where they are (sort of like a ground based GPS). When we got our new SCBAs we had the option of this module, but we're a small department and we could not justify the extra cost of this.
I was driving an 18 wheeler when that happened I was woundering exactly what happened. That building has been demolished and all thats left is an empty lot. I hope they fried that dang arsonist.
Anyone who doesn't know Capt. Abbt...he trained me while I was going through his fire academy. The man is tougher than nails, and totally fearless. To hear this makes my stomach turn into knots...cause he's the type of guy you are hoping is there for you when the sh*t hits the fan. Glad and greatful that he is okay
That's horrifying. He was so scared, that he couldn't think well enough to conserve his air and speak clearly. It was a captain too. I'm glad he made it out. You can hear his PASS alarm going off when another firefighter keys the mic.
the first time I watched it was durring my training in communications an its kind of hard to belive that we are in 2011 and the quality of the transmitions for the radios were so bad , everybody wants to talk at the same time, took forever to oficialy declare a mayday
You would think that with the technology today,,even ten years ago, they would have radios you can actually understand with an emergency power boost button that would wipe out other transmissions when sending a May Day.
Glad to see he made it out, I feared the worse for a couple minutes there when he wouldn't give a status report back to command. Hope he made alright in the hospital.
Radio traffic should have jumped from one FG to another....and coms to the Downed ff should have continued on the org FG.....and if the OIC listened to the traffic at the beginning...he would have been trapped for less time...I heard the Mayday from The capt...then another company ask command twice "did you hear that mayday?" the OIC should have STFU and listened to the traffic to him. I know its hectic at a fire...but rule one...LISTEN TO YOUR GOD DAMN MEN ON THE OTHER END OF THAT WALKIE!
Good job on gettin the Cpt out but the I.C should have stopped ALL RAIDO TRAFFIC the only traffic there should have been is between the I.C and the trapped Cpt. Also the R.I.T team all other should have stopped. But they did a great job on getting him out ALIVE and thats the most important thing. GOD bless you my fellow brothers stay safe.
Whay are there men standing around instead of doing something to bennafit the rescue efforts? I understand letting men rehab and you cant just expect men who are already exaughsted to get back to work right away, but if that were my brother up there, i would change out my bottle and get right back to work... good job boys... stay safe brothers...
@pfc884 Better yet, He should have transferred command of fire operations to another Chief on another FG channel while he took charge of rescue operations on whatever channel the lost F/F was on. The IC was not a dumbass, he was overwhelmed.
man we are told never to use the ladder like they do here but you know what fuck them i would have done the same who cares about the fucken ladder smash them windows to find him a ladder truck can always be repaired you cant do that to a life and as a ff i hope i never have to say those damn words
Please don't take offence for this - but when calling 'Mayday' please don't shout, say it as calmly and clearly as possible. I know it's hard to do but it will get the mesage through more quickly.
Well done guys, I'm very impresed with your work in that difficult and scary situation.
wow... when this happened I was 17 at the time. this is just me and my thinking but... i would tell the IC and Fire command that I am going to go and search on foot carrying 3 bottles with me. and hearing that the Cap was at a window, I would have ripped through all the walls on the 5th floor closest to the windows if I had to
im currently deciding wether or not I should become a fire fighter. right here is what made me choose to pursue it. the feeling you would get from saving a fallen brother is something I can only dream of.
i think the people for helping us make the fello brothers the help we need to get throw to other about how dangerous this job really is on high rise building fire and be saf and coming home with our family
in my oppinion this took way to long in the first video it took the truck 5 to 7 minutes to get the ladder at the 5th floor and there was a engine company and they were all standing and looking i dont knoww seems way to long to me and those 18 minutes probably felt like hours to the firefighter in there
im glad he made it...that is one thing no firefighter wants to experience, but just imagine how differently this could have turned out if he had a bail out bag though.
you do hear the pass alarm .. you can hear it when they first show him at the window and them sayin they got him .. only for like a second u can hear it though .. and in a bit of radio communication afterwards you can hear it lol
Thank God everyone made it out...i know in a situation like that you panic...but if possible gaining control of yourself and surroundings and thinking of things to save yourself...i might be wrong but i never heard a pass device...radio communication was good and bad...and learning the correct way to skip breathe is a great way to conserve what air you have in your SCBA..great job to everyone though and having ALS on scene...
wow thank god he got out but did that building even have sprinklers and the stair wells should have been presurerized cuz they said he was in the stairwell or is that where they thought he was
firstly, thank god everyone made it out, but more importantly why do you guys not use any kind of BA entry control? how do you know who and how many teams are inside? im a UK firefighter and sometimes think that you guys dont look out for your own safety before anyone else, im not slagging anyone off or having a go just wonder why or if you have any form of entry control when BA teams are comitted into a risk area
the way things are done in the U.S. is we recieve a mayday call everyone get out of the building. from there a RIT team (Rapid Intervention Team) goes in with forcible entry tools spare bottles the whole deal to rescue the firefighter that called in a mayday. Question for you now... what is a BA entry control?
on our stn we have an accountability board and it has all the sectors on it. The we also have someone at the door with an accountability board doing entry control and we write what time you go in so that we know when we should be calling you out because we dont want people running out of air and such .. but yah they didnt seem like they knew exactly who was where and doing what with who lol
I'm glad the capt was able to be rescued. However it troubled me to listen to him call a mayday at least 4 times before command reacted to it. Also, WAY to much radio traffic after it was called. Our dept will go to another ch for operations while the mayday firefighter stays on the original ch with a chief or another member who relays info. That way not everyone is walking over each other and delaying important info to get out. Works great.
Thank you Capt. ABBT for sharing this. It is a wake up call that it can happen to ourselves. I pray that none of my brothers or sisters find themselves here in this situation. mutualaidsupplies and CarlFb85 apparently dont need the training or reminders.
I remember this day. I was at home watching this unfold on the news. I pray i never have a situation like this, or any others where a fellow brother calls mayday over the radio.
the I.C. should have told everyone to shut the hell up while we have a brother screaming for help and should have more guys in there trying to fine the trapped brother and all that other radio traffic should have stopped
@firebuff2448 the way they do it now after that incident is they have a dedicated button on some newer radio's that if you push that button, it shuts down all communications on channel and opens up a direct link with the incident commander. so basically, now when you push that button, time stops and your talking to the incident commander with no interference from any other radio traffic.
@firebuff2448 Better yet, He should have transferred command of fire operations to another Chief on another FG channel while he took charge of rescue operations on whatever channel the lost F/F was on.
Yes the I.C. remained calm, but he also did not act fast enough and seemed to be mostly unaware of what was going on. I give the I.C. a grade of "D" He could have done much better. 18 Mins is way too long for any firefighter to be trapped.
@SgtSMOKE78 I been a firefighter/EMT for 17 years. And if you think 18 minutes is pretty damn good then you are pretty damn stupid ! Pinellas County, Fl average RIT rescue is 90 seconds or less! MORON ! 18 mins to save a brother firefighter is just plain pathetic !
@SgtSMOKE78 You need to do your research before you shoot your mouth. There are many Depts that do it better everyday. I am sorry to burst your bubble, but your Dept lacks the proper training. Simple as that. And to think your ego is getting in the way of doing it better for next time, makes me uneasy to think that you guys call yourself professionals.
@SgtSMOKE78 1. Do your RESEARCH, its not hard to let your fingers do the walking... 2. Your the one "owning" up to this scenario so therefore either your Dept does it equally as bad as Houston did or Worst. 3. Just because I am blunt does not mean I am upset, moron.
unreal! the problem with these situations is communications. I could not believe all that unescessary radio traffic while a brother is screaming for help. I'm glad the Capt. made it out! to bad the arsonist is still walking this earth.
the arsonist is not walking she got 25 years in prison for 3 felony counts murder and 1 count of 1st degree arson her name is misty ann weaver i saw it on here
I love all of these guys that monday morning quarterback everything. Well all know he messed up and we all know the whole thing was messed up from the very start. This video is supposed to be a training aid a nd used as a lesson. We have come a long way since this video and enhanced our high guidline and high response plans.
this is really hard to listen too....thank GOD he got out....my question...why is there so much radio traffic NOT concerning the MAYDAY going on this channel....
Fuck You! Fuck You! Fuck You! We have all drivin to the station to fast, we have all drivin an apparutus to fast, we have all entered a building to fast. The next time that we have to critizize, think about all the time that we have enjoy each other and what we do!
May we use this as a training video for our new firefighters? They think because they get a tag and a t-shirt that they know everything. What a great video!
1st he didn't go in alone. He was the Capt of a crew. His members ran low on air. The also had a civilian victim they were removing. He decided to send his crew out, then ran out of air himself. So yes, the Captain who nearly died did some things wrong. Also Command had a bunch of things that went wrong. I would like to thank the person who released the video as I use it immensely for firefighter safety/survival and commanding a mayday. It truly is a wonderful training aide for what not to do.
The bigest fuck up was he went in ALONE. our rule is TWO IN TWO OUT no one gets left behind. ALWAYS KEEP THAT IN MIND FOR YOUR SAFETY AND YOUR DEPARTMENT...........Rest in peace for the 3 victums......
has this happened to any of u? please tell us how "your dept. handled it without confusion and cahos"? i'm really curious. i can sure use your valuable info to teach my people!
Cutting a hole makes the Biggest difference in the world. You can see what's going on because the smoke clears, You can control the progress because the fire will follow the air.
Um, That is why a Thermal imagers is Standard issue to RIT teams, at least in my part of the Country it is ! So smoke shouldnt matter ! The RIT team should be equipped to do the job right !
The command officer WAS thinking the capt. when he ordered for the roof to be vented because it increases his survivability by decreasing chance of flashover, backdrafts, further advancement of fire, and by venting it will drasticly increase visibiltly. all that thick blacl smoke comming out the window was where the capt was. my guess is that it was pretty much zero visibility.
hell yes this is a cluster fuck! my uncle was working with the person that was stuck in the building just last night so yes he is still doing this and he is fine.
What a cluster fuck!!!!! alot went wrong here. Lack of communitcation, no one cleared channel or no channel was assigned on the mayday was called and the list goes on.
yes i did see the first video, but take in effect, how long did it take for Command to deploy the RIT team ? Too me, it seems it took a while for the RIT to be deployed. Besides the command officer worrying about roof ventalition he should worry about the Capt.

What most people don't realize about firemen is that: starting about 6:30 in this clip, chances are... a couple of the guys on the ground were already busting the Captain's balls....
Protocol!, he did ignore the mayday at the start and that mans going through hell!and brewfighter is talking out of his ass! this video is used for training to show the mistakes that they made, both control, search and the captain, which they admit, so get off you high horse brewfighter
Yes, in fact you do have to be in good shape to be a firefighter in the States. Bottom line is, you have no idea..(or maybe you do); but if you did, you would understand the immense physical demand structural firefighting has..no matter how good of shape you are in. Everybody in this operation should be viewed as a hero. Mistakes or not, they should be utilized as a learning tool.
Terible Video first of all the fireman calling the mayday and the incident commander needs to be on a seprate tack channel. and why did command ingore the mayday several times ? i feel bad to the fireman calling the mayday but you get what u pay for huh norfolk command!!
You are an idiot. This is a prime example of the importance of a Mayday protocol. If you think you or your department are infallible, you need to reexamine yourself and your department. You should be ashamed that you would criticize such an operation; and you should be greatful that Capt. Abbt made it out alive. He is a hero. He risked his life trying to save others. Have you ever been in his situation...truly? If you have, you would have greater understanding for all of those involved.
thats why we should all appreciate our firefighters.. they risk their lifes for us.....

@SgtSMOKE78 As per the Dictionary: The word "Worst" means "most lacking in skill; least skilled" Which defines you very well.

I love all of these guys that monday morning quarterback everything. Well all know he messed up and we all know the whole thing was messed up from the very start. This video is supposed to be a training aid a nd used as a lesson. We have come a long way since this video and enhanced our high guidline and high response plans.

May we use this as a training video for our new firefighters? They think because they get a tag and a t-shirt that they know everything. What a great video!
scottasmothers 3 years ago
1st he didn't go in alone. He was the Capt of a crew. His members ran low on air. The also had a civilian victim they were removing. He decided to send his crew out, then ran out of air himself. So yes, the Captain who nearly died did some things wrong. Also Command had a bunch of things that went wrong. I would like to thank the person who released the video as I use it immensely for firefighter safety/survival and commanding a mayday. It truly is a wonderful training aide for what not to do.
FETC2007 3 years ago
The bigest fuck up was he went in ALONE. our rule is TWO IN TWO OUT no one gets left behind. ALWAYS KEEP THAT IN MIND FOR YOUR SAFETY AND YOUR DEPARTMENT...........Rest in peace for the 3 victums......

he went in but lost his partner...thats what i heard

everyone needs to remember to use the LUNAR acronym during a mayday.
L-Location
U-Unit number
N-Name
A-Assignment
R-Resources to rescue you and anyone with you.

thermalimager 3 years ago
Cutting a hole makes the Biggest difference in the world. You can see what's going on because the smoke clears, You can control the progress because the fire will follow the air.
paigerockson 3 years ago
Um, That is why a Thermal imagers is Standard issue to RIT teams, at least in my part of the Country it is ! So smoke shouldnt matter ! The RIT team should be equipped to do the job right !
mutualaidsupplies 2 years ago
when you cut a hole it increases the air to the fire causeing the fire to move towards the hole. which causes more fire
LaughterIsLifeButSor 3 years ago
but it decreases smoke and super heated gasses, thus making it a safer environment for the RIT team and the victim.
ncfirefighter910 3 years ago 2
The command officer WAS thinking the capt. when he ordered for the roof to be vented because it increases his survivability by decreasing chance of flashover, backdrafts, further advancement of fire, and by venting it will drasticly increase visibiltly. all that thick blacl smoke comming out the window was where the capt was. my guess is that it was pretty much zero visibility.

hell yes this is a cluster fuck! my uncle was working with the person that was stuck in the building just last night so yes he is still doing this and he is fine.
lostgod985 3 years ago
What a cluster fuck!!!!! alot went wrong here. Lack of communitcation, no one cleared channel or no channel was assigned on the mayday was called and the list goes on.

yes i did see the first video, but take in effect, how long did it take for Command to deploy the RIT team ? Too me, it seems it took a while for the RIT to be deployed. Besides the command officer worrying about roof ventalition he should worry about the Capt.

What most people don't realize about firemen is that: starting about 6:30 in this clip, chances are... a couple of the guys on the ground were already busting the Captain's balls....
lotusmark 3 years ago
Great job guys. To the guy being rescued, way to hang in there. My prayers go out to all of you. I know that had to have been tiring.
ddrfreak1116 3 years ago
Protocol!, he did ignore the mayday at the start and that mans going through hell!and brewfighter is talking out of his ass! this video is used for training to show the mistakes that they made, both control, search and the captain, which they admit, so get off you high horse brewfighter
confranman 3 years ago 2
to be the one to find and remove a body from such a bad situation has to be mentally tough...
my only comment is the chief looked a little out of shape....maybe not
i always thought you had to be in good shape to be a firefighter; in Canada you do....
garycalgary 3 years ago
Yes, in fact you do have to be in good shape to be a firefighter in the States. Bottom line is, you have no idea..(or maybe you do); but if you did, you would understand the immense physical demand structural firefighting has..no matter how good of shape you are in. Everybody in this operation should be viewed as a hero. Mistakes or not, they should be utilized as a learning tool.

What a goat rodeo....good job command /sarcasm off

Terible Video first of all the fireman calling the mayday and the incident commander needs to be on a seprate tack channel. and why did command ingore the mayday several times ? i feel bad to the fireman calling the mayday but you get what u pay for huh norfolk command!!
CarlFB86 3 years ago
You are an idiot. This is a prime example of the importance of a Mayday protocol. If you think you or your department are infallible, you need to reexamine yourself and your department. You should be ashamed that you would criticize such an operation; and you should be greatful that Capt. Abbt made it out alive. He is a hero. He risked his life trying to save others. Have you ever been in his situation...truly? If you have, you would have greater understanding for all of those involved.
