That little green bottle of smoke fluid only lasted a month after I got it for Christmas of '72. After that, i started using baby oil for smoke fluid, and it worked too.
This set gave me an idea to propose to Lionel, Williams, MTH, & Atlas: Take this set and replace the steamer with a horn-equipped GP20 or GP38 decorated for BNSF, Union Pacific, C.P.Rail, CSX, or NS. Have 2 uncoupling tracks; one for the main line & one for the siding. Replace the caboose with a F.R.E.D. equipped box car. Lionel could add their weight-activated crossing gate & semaphore. Photos of the train set in use by kids with other toys. Anyone like this idea?
I remember this commercial well as a kid. Marx did pack alot of play value into the set with all the accessories. The catalog stores " wish books " offered simular sets from Marx as well.
Still have mine after 30+ years... and the thing is built like a tank, works like it did when recently unpacked back so many Christmas ago. Missing a couple things here and there, nothing major :-)

Check out the Penn Central logo on the caboose - betcha most of those Big Rail Work Trains by Marx long outlasted the infamous PC!

I got one of these sets for Christmas in 1972. No longer have it. I'm looking for another one, preferrably complete in the box.
