lisen to this song! just about love--not all the hype and music of today like lady gaga or whatever she is. music had substance then. now-trash goes to the top.
grew up in san francisco, this song reflects the great time it was back in the day-mellow--more respect and love back then. california dreamin was still alive. all gone now. its sad-we all lose!

The entire sound was perfect. Yes, she was the star of it, but he was as well in the studio. When the sax break comes in, it just pushes it up and she is every match for it with the vocal that cries out blues and blahs, really from the depths. An amazing artist - what a talent. Still one of my top ten concerts in the spring of 1974.
Karen had such a beautiful voice. There's really nothing else that compares. I'm of the opinion that in order to be appreciated to the max, one really needs to hear her music on vinyl, along with a top sound system. Truely amazing. Thanks for posting.
Isn't it amazing how a voice like Karens never gets old. It just gets better and better as time goes by and she is someone you can never get tired of listening to. Man I wish they still made female singers like Karen. So smooth and pitch perfect.
Today is Monday and its raining here in cali what a perfect song for a day like this , and yes She had the perfect voice and song choices miss her dearly
I think of my daddy.... He passed last moth on July 13th and I miss him very much... This song takes me back to when I was little and he was always there to love and protect me... There songs help keep the bond I have with him ALIVE... Thank you Karen and Richard.. You are in my heart always....
For an "untrained" voice, she was perfect. What a shame anorexia took hold.
You know, if you search the video's.. I believe the fashions of the day played a role... they looked "bulky" no matter what size you were. Karen fell victim to this, and "popular' opinion of what a woman should "look" like.
What a shame and great tragedy. Not only did she leave her wonderful voice, but her struggles with anorexia, has surely helped countless people,, .. someone very close to me included.
I have no idea how old you are, but this is a seminal early 70's mix, done at Herb Alpert's A&M studios and considered one of Richard Carpenter's best
If I died and God gave me a choice to reexperience any time period of my life, I'd pick the 1970's, and I'd ask for front row seats to a Carpenters concert!
What a truly beautiful voice she had. I believe that God brought her music into my life as I too suffered from a deadly eating disorder. Because of her, I got the treatment I needed and my life saved. Thank you Karen...you still inspire me everyday!!!!!!!
That voice...Oh, that voice! Truly of our the greatest song stylists of all time. Anyone who can't the beauty, in the voice Karen Carpenter, couldn't possible love music. Listen to her, at 2:07. This was from the days when one didn't have to have backup dancers wiggling and shaking it, to disguise the fact that...Oh, skip it. May Karen Carpenter's spirit be embraced, with His love, forever, and...a day.
oh my god,i'm gonna cry if i listen to this song when i'm alone next week, away from my home,in a campus filled with strangers...hope i will fit in fast...
Yes, of course Rainy days and Mondays always get me down. What a pity that such a great talent as Karen went so soon. Her voice is one of the most beautiful ones ever, I think..
Sometimes - but then I sing and it gets better. Trust me. Even if you can't carry a tune in a bucket - SING. It will make you feel better. Even if it is a sad song - you will have confidence. Trust me!
What great phrasing. What a great voice. And it is so weird.. the poignancy in her voice, which always sounded genuine now comes through time as a direct connection to her heart.
I agree Blakbonez. Good music transcends racial barriers. Her voice just makes me feel so good and calm inside. Sad that her life was spiraling out of control due to an eating disorder. I must find a cd of their music.
my dad would bring home albums of artists we didn't know anything about. The Carpenters was one of them, we would learn the songs and sing along with the record. imagine this, in a black neighborhood hearing this music from our house, but my dad didn't care about that. good singing is good singing to him, i am the same way. love the Carpenters music.
She can make some of the most incredible sounds. It seems odd but close your eyes and listen to the word.. it's at about the 2:25 mark. Actually just close your eyes and listen to the whole thing. She was one of a kind.
Listen to her sing the chorus at 1:00-1:12.Amazing talent and voice, tormented by the things in her own head....funny how someones sorrow and pain can bring people such joy
Karen didn't start singing untill she was about 16 years old. Up to then she was only a drummer. It was Richard that would make her get up and sing from time to time and even at 16 while she was alittle rough around the edges. She still had the vocal sound we as fan have come to cherish.. May Karen Rest in Peace..
That was a gift she always had. She started singing ever since as a baby....about four years old.....no singing lessons but just her feelings....she always did it her way.........everything with feelings
Incredible. Absolutely incredible. Did she take voice training or something? Did they do that with over dubbing? Or did she really sound like that? Like nothing ever heard. Almost doesn't seem possible.
their most moving songs where meloncoly. So unfortuanate that an article comment would be the demise of her fragile self.
