  • What's not to love?

  • He said "Hi Ginger" because he just sang Cheek to Cheek. I'm sure he was having flashbacks of the FEATHERS incident. :)

  • WTF !! ONE PERSON DON'T LIKE FRED ASTAIRE ??!!!!! HOOO GO KILL YOURSELF ! -.-' .

  • I wonder why he waited for video tape instead of just recording it on film...

  • Fred shouts out his best girl! The little laugh he does right after is just so cute.

  • I'am 16 year old .. i love fred astaire, frank sinatra, ginger rogers and all of this .. And i just hateee this f*cking rap.. It is normal ?! ( 1 person loves rap --' )

  • Fred did not want to do a special on live TV, so he waited until videotape was ready, so he could tape the segments individually and get them just right. As was mentioned before, this special ("An Evening With Fred Astaire") was shot on color videotape at NBC and is the second oldest surviving color tape. Was restored at UCLA some years ago (clip is restored version) and it came out beautifully. Fred was wonderful in the show and it won many Emmys. When is this going to be available on DVD?

  • Does he sing this live or did he lip-sync?

  • @Goedhartbros

Fred sang all the songs LIVE.

  • I LOVE YOU FRED

  • He was such a lovely man, It was a pity he had to go. He was so kind hearted an such an amazing tap dancer. I'm 14 and I love his dancing and always mimick it (if I can. :)) I think I must get it from my Grandparents, they love Fred Astaire... Such a lovely man..... :)

  • thanks for posting!

  • This is one of the very earliest color videotapes, and this version must be from the UCLA restoration. It looks remarkably good.

Astaire was in a class of his own. When, oh when, will we see his TV specials issued on DVD?

  • Was this broadcast live??? How? In those days, live color shows were preserved

on kiniscopes, which made 16MM films. If this was saved on tape, it had to

have been shot first, then aired later.

  • Such class, such charm....ahhhhhhhh....

  • wonderful singing and boy does he look good for his age! considering he was 59 when he did this, he really doesn't look it

  • such wonderful singing, and boy did he look good for his age!

  • one standard after another, he introduced all these songs....untouchable in this dept

  • Just such amazingly beautiful songs. So melodic and enchanting! True class and dung so wondefully. Words cannot describe/..

  • What healthy sound mind he had.... no wonder he pushed 90 at the time of his demise....

  • Fred Astaire is the most lovable guy I've ever seen in my life.

  • The greatest, that's all there is to it.

  • Fred Astaire is my inspiration

  • This aired in 1958 from what I read. Im only 16 years old and I enjoy these pop standards far more than any of the so- called "top hits" today. music may never be this good again.(Im only using Fukarusai's account)

  • Everything he did, he did well.

Fred Astaire, a life of elegance, What a fine gentleman! love

  • "life of elegance",,,very good

  • Happy 110th birthday Fred

    u rock

  • i just wanna hug him, for a longgg time :)

  • me too mayb even a kiss lollol

  • Me too. Wouldn't he be the most awesome grandfather ever?!

  • i want his baby's

  • He's too darn hot; and too darn cute!! And not sad at all, I can't agree with that :0)

  • I love it. I love everything Fred has done, but I can't help but notice that he seems a bit sad. Like the joy's been knocked out of him by older age.

  • I agree, there's a tinge of sadness there.

  • Kind of, but I think he got shier as he got older.

  • I read where he lost his wife to cancer after a long and very happy marriage and was really bereft and heartbroken, around the time he was filming Daddy Longlegs with Leslie Caron. Maybe this was near that time.

  • I think Phyllis died in 1956 or '57, and this is 1958, so yes.

  • No, 1954 I think, during the filming of Band Wagon.

  • Oh Fred - You are MAGICAL!

  • also i love that song!! can't take that away from me!! i KNEW he was going to sing that song!

  • I LOVE that he sand songs from his movies with ginger!! and then gave a SHOUT OUT!! Hey Ginger!

  • Not only drums. What about his piano playing, could have played in Carnege Hall he was that good.

  • i love it!:D

  • So effortless. So classy. They don't make 'em like Fred anymore.

  • what a difference with all the technology they use today and cant entertain like that anymore...

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I just wish it was possible to buy a video or DVD of his "Evenings". They were entirely his own ideas and under his control so they're rare examples of exactly how he wanted to perform. Wonderful!

  • what a great guy. and a good drummer took lesssons from alvin stoller . anybody have any film of him playing drums. what a guy totally elegant. and not gay like cats today. a swingin cat and aristrocraticalyy cool with good time and rthym

  • he plays the drums in the film: daddy long legs

  • Do a search for "daddy long legs drums" and you will see it. Also, if you type in "a damsel in distress drums," you'll see the other movie number in which he played them--second vid down.

  • Absolutely agree with all your commemts. How about "Drum Crazy" in "Easter Parade"?

  • Astaire was one of the coolest people I have ever scene in just the sense of 'cool' you that describe. Duke Ellington was another.

  • Absolute perfection!

  • I find it interesting that all the songs from his earlier movies are sung in a lower key. I liked the way his voice matured over the years. but I loved his voice when he was young just as much.

  • If this clip is AN EVENING WITH FRED ASTAIRE 1958, then this is the second oldest surviving color videotape on earth. Thanks for posting. Thanks for preserving.

  • I've seen loads of colourised clips before 1958. I've even seen a colourised version of Trooping The Colour from 1906.

  • you don't understand what he's saying. This is the second oldest videotape.. meaning produced for use on tv. There were plenty of color movies before this, but no videotape made for tv.

  • ... did that really need a thumbs down? Couldn't who ever done that, have just left it?

  • Don't get too bent up over this. Anyone who understands the history of television will understand the significance of this program.

  • Irving Berlin once said that Astaire was the purest talent he ever worked with. Astaire was such a great dancer it is easy to forget that he was a great singer. He was content to hit all the notes right and to sing the words clearly. It's a lesson a bunch of modern singers would learn from Fred Astaire. Thanks for posting.
