As for wages....their wage is MORE than fair consider how easy their job is and what little knowledge is required for most positions on board. As for alleged crap ferry services....try Marine Atlantic for Ontario ferries...heck even go south to WA state. Now those are poorly mamanged ferries and all of which are government runed and owned.
The new Atlantic Vision ferry for Marine Atlantic is charging $14 for a simple breakfast and has a turn around time in port that extends up to 4 hours. They also fired a lot of their engineering staff in Jan/ Feb due to incompetence. You allege it is poorly run and with such a comment it is quite obivous you have not been on another ferry service.
I am not saying anyone of the street can do it. Please don't misquote me. As for Seafaring careers, operating these ferries is a piece of cake in comparison to running a great circle from SF to Japan for example. I don`t hate ferry workers as they are qualified for their positions..... they just don`t do the same amount of work as someone who is off shore
Umm the people who work on the ferries, especially those off the bridge have stupid easy jobs and as such they do not make as much as other seafarers. Infact Tranport Canada has often toyed with idea of given only partial credit for sea time for those on ferries like they do with the Navy. I have worked with former ferry workers and I would agree with TC if they decide to only give partial credit.

BC Ferry workers deserve a living wage
and they deserve all their pay bi-monthly or
every two weeks like every other worker not partial
pay. It's despicable how staff and gulf islanders been
treated since it was privatized. Not everything has
to be for maximum profit. BC Ferries was set up
as part of our highway structure not a cash cow
now shut the fuck up!
