Like helium, SF6 entirely nontoxic. But nontoxic gases can still replace air and cause oxygen deprivation. Since your body requires carbon dioxide to trigger that sudden feeling of "Help! I can't breathe!", you can kill quite a few brain cells this way before realizing that something is wrong.

I suspect it's dangerous for the fact SF6 is denser than air. I have heard that gases denser than air can be hazardous to inhale, even if they're non-toxic, because they tend to just "sit" at the bottom of your lungs and can be hard to exhale.
