I was looking for a hip-hop beat and stumbled upon this song and it was great. If I had the studio equipment I'd sample this for a rap beat and have part of the chorus sung for the chorus of the beat but I don't have anything to do that with. =/
excellent song i remember this video back in the day i use to get home from school and watch videos all day!!! lol homework was usually done the next morning or during a boring class!!!
I remember seeing this video one time (and one time only) back in 1984 on a video music show; it was played at the end of the show while the program credits rolled (which really pissed me off at the time!!) Anyway, this is a great memory--the Lp version of the song runs about a minute longer and has an pretty cool guitar part before the fade. Actually, the whole album is good (don't know if it ever made it to CD)...one last thing: Paul WEBB started the band Talk Talk, not Paul Weller...
Ideality, (represented by the women in white, Greek goddesses? -the graces?) leads to (threat of?/fear of?) war, destruction...just as does (later) crossing the finishing line /or trying to turn life into a race (the apparent winner draws up when he sees the white ribbon across the road. -Odd, but something of the sort is what the video seems to say.
Then w/ the 3women and judge they all celebrate as one. -What's the concept?
Off they run in fear of girls? or heaven? till safe behind the lines.
@xfloridachadx The video was shown in the U.S. (the song reached the Top 40), but this must be the English version. I don't remember any of those intercut black & white photos, or the part before the song begins when I saw it.
I was quite skeptical of this video, but now I am glad that I've finally got a chance to view this. It reminds me so much of England, when I was there for three years and it was beautiful even during the foggy moments. Just look at all of the nature of this clip!
4:04, a flash of what looks like a Vietnamese woman from a black and white pic (taken most likely a long time ago). Strange. I wonder if that was in the original video or not...
I seriously don't comprehend this video. At 2:23 they suddenly break out their lunchboxes (which are not visible anywhere on their bikes during the journey) and start to eat a banana, see three beautiful (but seemingly freezing cold) nymphs/muses, and then...after almost throwing up his banana...and this is really the question I have...THEY ride away as fast as they can? Wouldn't they stay, and , you know, play a little kissy face? Great song. Very confusing video.
Paul Weller rocks. thank god for him during the 80's... at least i wore some Fred Perry shirts and loafers. otherwise it would have been tube skirts and neon. thank you Paul.
I'm confused. Are they mocking cyclists? And how are they able to stay focused on finishing the race when faced with so many distractions (beautiful, curvaceous, seductive sirens, airplane bombs, nuclear holocaust, desperate starving communists?). Might it have anything to do with their healthy vegetarian diet? It's nice at the end that they both come in together, both equal winners in a non-competitive sport. Why even bother to have a shot-gun start?
@theseether all serious cyclists get leg massages before and after riding...that's why they shave their legs. (and so they can be bandaged more easily) If you don't, you'll get buildup of toxic products of driving beyond your chemical limits. If you can't afford a masseuse ya gotta do it yerself. I admit he made it look a bit skeevy.
What a great recording!
