I am a child of the Sixty's. Long forgotten memories. My hair is old and frayed. So I am an old dissuasive so you might say. My memories are lessons to those who will listen. This Beautiful Liv's you lead. you take for granted. As I once did. You have a very tough life ahead of your self's.I do feel so sorrow for what is ahead. No not Religion. Not the Sooth Sayers. But for you the Challenges before you are so daunting. I feel fear for you. I don't know maybe It's just me
@DanaGarret: the sites are defunct at this point. I think there is something key to they idea though. There are a few remaining Co-Ops out there- I've visited Rainbow Grocer out in San Fran and 'interviewed' several random employees to get a sense of things. They loved it-- and the average turnover rate there was very low-- relatively speaking.
I sincerely beleive the next step for our capitalism is to restructure the institution of the corporation to be more egalitarian-- more co-op like.
That will never happen do to the nature of Greed. Corporations are based as all capitalist structures on the god of greed. Greed drives Capitalism. As long as as this Long road of Self greed is imbued in Capitalism. Capitalism will drive its self into Extinction
@TheElMoIsEviL By "various circumstances" I had in mind things like nurture. I'm not sure if the tea would be more likely to be stolen in impoverished areas unless the tea were viewed as a necessary food staple or something that could be sold.
Thank you Dana for expressing this- I've always liked the notion for maximizing liberty & equality. I found libertarian ethics short by 50% and wondered why (its right there: "All men are created equal...").
I ran several workplace democracy promotion websites, I see it happening online someday. I hope you'll join us.
@tkoaho I usually add "human well being" into the mix of "liberty" and "equality," but I forgot to do so this time. I would love see an example of one of your workplace democracy promotion websites. I am very interested in that stuff. Could you send me a link by PM?
A true thinker we have in you Dana, a real gentleman. You pass at least my own subjective test in that I find myself ensuring some of your videos, even ones, perhaps especially ones, that are "antagonistic" to my own. I shall have to listen to your contentions again, but I can say, the first pass has given me much cause for reflection. Well done, as always!
However, I'd contrast that with online piracy of music, movies, porn, etc, which is endemic to the internet now and a lot of media producers and artists complain is robbing them blind. Most people under 30 take free media as a given.
There seems to be a very different psychology at work here. I think in part its the perceived anonymity of the internet and partly because taking a *copy* of something doesn't feel the same as taking hard goods.
@iamcuriousblue That's because taking a copy ISN'T the same as taking hard goods, and it's one of the evolutions or progressions I heard Dana discuss in this video. While it's true that "piracy" can be flatly destructive, it is equally true that "piracy" is a generative force, both economically (mashups) and socially (remix culture). New technology creates more new value than it destroys. The record industries are, in this analogy, the pessimists who speak in absolutes. They are also wrong. ;)
@maymaym "That's because taking a copy ISN'T the same as taking hard goods" I think you are on to something here. Taking a copy requires no depletion, but taking hard goods does.
@iamcuriousblue Looks like my comment has gone awol. So here it goes again with additions. Free media is here and its here to stay. Free to air tv, youtube, and all we need now is a free service for music. Pay attention google, bring us youjuke, where we can subscribe to bands, and watch vids and they get paid by ad revenue. Or we can listen to audio only and save the download of the video when we want to browse the web. Its not that people are thieves, its that rigid business men don't inovate.
There's a place in Mendocino County, California called the Apple Farm that works on the same system. They sell organic, heirloom apples out of a farm stand, usually unattended. You can come by 24 hours, weigh your apples and leave the money in a box. They've been doing this for years, apparently successfully.
well i look at the data and see by measures of percentage terms - increased - health, longevity, education, democracy, human rights, prosperity etc
What does that make me, an optimist because i see that, believe that?
there is a good quote i can't find about people who talk in absolues, i think your expose' has been most excellent and it would have been most apt to quote it - u don't per-chance know what it is do you?
Dana I do wish you would Communicant with your viewers. it,s been over three months or more since we have heard from you.I do miss your discourse

@iamcuriousblue It is a given (free media) its ad revenue that will pay for its generation. Check out youtube, lotsa free content paid for by ads.

@iamcuriousblue "'Most' under take free media as a given?" Really, "most?" Perhaps you are correct, but I would like to see a study verifying it.

I am speaking in anecdotal generalities on this point, of course.
