You are wrong to assume that 63% of Canadians voted for a coalition government. It is true that 63% of Canadians didn't vote for conservatives, but the logic breaks down to think that 63% voted against conservatives. For example if someone voted liberal their second choice may have been conservative and not ndp or green. If you don't live in Quebec then you didn't even get a chance to vote BQ( not that they actually want your vote). The coalition would not be a stable government.

Hi karflooie, yes the conservative government has been a stable governing party since 2006. What this is really about is the tax payer funding for political parties. This was put in place by Chretien back when the liberals had most of the votes. So basically the liberals padding their wallets off of the tax payer teat. The conservatives have the most votes and therefor the most money to lose from this. This didn't sit well with the other parties and that is why we are were we are now.
@karflooie I call what we have now a stable government. It is the longest standing minority government in Canadian history. A coalition government that includes the Bloc is offensive, as their mission is to break up the country. The Bloc can say that they are not a part of it, just supporting it.. but the reality is that the Liberals and NDP would need them for every vote in the House of Commons. I for one do not want a federal seperatist party as the deciding factor in every vote.

As a fiscal conservative, i voted Liberal (Flaherty doesn't give a shit about Ontario). Wasn't really happy with Dion, but voted Libs anyway. For the last time, people, Canadians do not vote for Prime Ministers. Whoever is the leader of the party with the most members in parliament gets to be PM, and that person is only chosen by the party. This can happen in the middle of a PM's term -- when it does, we get a change of Prime Minister.

I don't know what the european situation is and I dont' think you do either. you can just pull ideals and generalities out your ass. The point is that we will have 2 PMs from the party that brought us the sponsorship scandal back to back... and neither of these people would have been elected to do the job. That is not democracy by any standard.
Well, in europe, most of the time they can never get a single party to have a majority. Usually, many parties that are like minded pool their deputees together until they have a majority. Sometimes this can lead to drama, of course, when one party decides it doesen't want to play nice, but then they can be replaced by others.
But then, they have 10+ parties (of which some are really really small), while we only have 4.
The important point, however, is that elections only happen when the situation is ungovernable - no one can agree with anyone else. Not when the party with most deputees is cut out of the loop.
It leads to more instability, but on the other hand, more accurate representation. Why should the three parties who have most of the deputees put up with Harper if he won't go out and get at least one of them to agree with him? It's usually not that hard to do, but he failed this time.
If you think parliamentary system is undemocratic..then leave Canada. Go somewhere else that you think it's democratic and before you go please bring Harper with you so that you can have your precious "Dear Leader"

Lower interest rates mean that the bank of Canada is foreseeing an economic plummet not unlike that of the US in the near future, because there is a lot of debt in the market. Lowering interest rates DIRECTLY lowers the value of the dollar, so don't think this is anything less than a desperate last-ditch effort to avert economic disaster.

The fact they were trying to pass a bill which would basically destroy the liberal funding for the next few elections as well as destroy the green party got the liberals up in arms about it, and the idea to prevent unions having the right to strike could NOT have been supported by the NDP or the Bloc. You are wrong to assume that 63% of Canadians voted for a coalition government. It is true that 63% of Canadians didn't vote for conservatives, but the logic breaks down to think that 63% voted against conservatives. For example if someone voted liberal their second choice may have been conservative and not ndp or green. If you don't live in Quebec then you didn't even get a chance to vote BQ( not that they actually want your vote). The coalition would not be a stable government.

Hi karflooie, yes the conservative government has been a stable governing party since 2006. What this is really about is the tax payer funding for political parties. This was put in place by Chretien back when the liberals had most of the votes. So basically the liberals padding their wallets off of the tax payer teat. The conservatives have the most votes and therefor the most money to lose from this. This didn't sit well with the other parties and that is why we are were we are now.

@karflooie I call what we have now a stable government. It is the longest standing minority government in Canadian history. A coalition government that includes the Bloc is offensive, as their mission is to break up the country. The Bloc can say that they are not a part of it, just supporting it.. but the reality is that the Liberals and NDP would need them for every vote in the House of Commons. I for one do not want a federal seperatist party as the deciding factor in every vote.

We invest heavily in inrastructure. We finance and give tax breaks to companies that work on innovative new technology. As a fiscal conservative, i voted Liberal (Flaherty doesn't give a shit about Ontario). Wasn't really happy with Dion, but voted Libs anyway. For the last time, people, Canadians do not vote for Prime Ministers. Whoever is the leader of the party with the most members in parliament gets to be PM, and that person is only chosen by the party. This can happen in the middle of a PM's term -- when it does, we get a change of Prime Minister.

Perhaps the worst thing to do during an economic crisis is giving veto power to the socialists and the NDP. Now with talks of Bob Rae running for Liberal leadership there is reason to be scared. He destroyed Ontario's economy back in the mid90s ($1million in debt/day). Harris had to clean it up and ended up taking on the majority of the hate for the cuts he was forced to make.
If we simply say "tax the rich", they'll just turn around and start firing people to counter their loses.

Well, in europe, most of the time they can never get a single party to have a majority. Usually, many parties that are like minded pool their deputees together until they have a majority. Sometimes this can lead to drama, of course, when one party decides it doesen't want to play nice, but then they can be replaced by others.
But then, they have 10+ parties (of which some are really really small), while we only have 4.

The important point, however, is that elections only happen when the situation is ungovernable - no one can agree with anyone else. Not when the party with most deputees is cut out of the loop.
It leads to more instability, but on the other hand, more accurate representation. Why should the three parties who have most of the deputees put up with Harper if he won't go out and get at least one of them to agree with him? It's usually not that hard to do, but he failed this time.

Unfortunately, the coalition supporters won't see it this way. Apparently when they checked off Liberal, NDP, or Bloc on their ballots, they were voting -against- Harper. But they were most certainly NOT voting against the other two parties. Oh heavens above, no. We can surmise: Any vote for a Lib is a vote for the NDP and Bloc and vice versa x2. At least that's what I'm getting from this.

If Quebec Wants Their Distinct French Society Then Secede And Have Your Own Fuckin Nation. Yugoslavia Split Because They Did Not Want Serbia To Dictate Their Society Beliefs On Their Ethnic Beliefs. The Same With The Former Soviet Union. The Same May Have To Happen With Canada Unfortunately And Tragically.
