this is my favorite movie when i was a kid and every time it was christmas i would always watch it and even now i have memories of this from back then
@ztslovebird Actually in the book, Ak finds Claus in the grass rather than the snow, but even so you have to wonder. On the other hand, Necile theorizes that maybe Claus's parents knew full well that the nymphs and fairies of Burzee would find the child and care for him.
That's a part of the story that Baum never, ever went into.
@ztslovebird actually it happend often and it didn't mean they were heartless. Winter solstice was the last feast for months as they then entered the starvation period (winter). The hope that animals or gods will rescue a child from a slow miserable starvation death is timeless.
@MaskedMan66 probably all of them. Anthropologically speaking though you made a judgment on people without ever living or experiencing real hardship like they did - that is foolishness.
@robocoastie "Anthropologically speaking though YOU made a judgment on people without ever living or experiencing real hardship like they did - that is foolishness."
@robocoastie There have always been other options for sparing children a slow and painful death. Leave them on a doorstep, with another family, in a warm place, but not on the ground all alone!! Why not hang a sign over him that says "Free Meal Here" while they were at it?
@jaredofmo I don't know if it'll be filmed, but there will certainly be photos. I'll direct you to them when they come out. It's a very trimmed-down version of the story covering some of the key moments in Claus's life, and except for me, everyone has more than one role; even our Claus appears in the opening scene as a fairy.
Man, the immortals song has to be the most kick ass song in a christmas special. It just makes this story larger than life. I remember being a little kid and watching this with my brother. @funincluded this is awesome...definitely not the walk through the daisies that the other Rankin-Bass specials were. I assumed that Chuck Jones worked on this for a long time because it's straight out of his bag and he was doing different things that have since went under the radar, at the time.

@funincluded what do you deem as acceptable then? in case you havent noticed, christmas is no longer about the birth of christ, its about what is most marketable, so yes, for society this is a very acceptable christmas movie.
in order for you to be christian than you shouldnt watch movies about santa claus in general, because he isnt a christian figure. the santa claus that society recognizes is a german pagan figure.
stop ruining the film for those who are able to love all things equally (which is what christ preaches)
What you said was " christmas is no longer about the birth of christ", insinuating that I was a "keep CHRIST in christmas" type of person, and that my objection to this movie had something to do with it lacking jesus or something
I'm not trolling, just posting an honest opinion. I'm sorry you're offended that this movie is awful
@anaximanderia 'Scuse me? Have you ever heard of Saint Nicholas? He was a Catholic bishop, and one of many figures that went into the Santa (which means "saint") we know today.
And where does Christ preach to "love all things equally?" He most certainly does not want people to love any other belief system than the one He gave us.
@MaskedMan66 I know what Santa stands for. The "Claus" is what comes from the german paganism. And in case any of the Christians who read this actually celebrate Christ's birthday, then they know that Christmas has nothing to do with the birth of Christ. 12/25 was chosen to ween Pagans off of their religion and into Christianity, so Roman Bishops adopted this date as the birth date of Christ bc it coincided with the Pagan ritual, Saturnalia.
@anaximanderia Christmas = The Mass (celebration) of the Christ. No matter when it's celebrated, that's what it's called.
It is a celebration of the birth of Yeshua bar-Yose, the Nazarene known as the Messiah, or, adapted from the Greek, the Christ. Most likely He was born in September, or some even posit April.
Now once again, where does Christ preach to "love all things equally?"
@anaximanderia Incidentally, I just discovered that Jesus's birth being celebrated on 12/25 has nothing to do with any pagan or other winter celebrations. Ancient Christian tradition places the date of Jesus's conception as March 25th. Nine months later brings you to December 25th.
@MaskedMan66 actually, if you read any writings on the conversion of pagans to christianity they state that it was easier to adopt 12/25 as the birth of Jesus because of the proximity to the pagan rituals, and since the actual birth date of Jesus is unknown it was simple to adopt this date as the probable date of birth. and if he was conceived on 3/25 doesnt mean he is born on 12/25 because the actual day can be different.
@anaximanderia Of course it can, but since to this day we can't pinpoint when conception actually takes place, the choosing of a date for the Annuciation just makes rounding off to the same day nine months later logical and convenient.
@MaskedMan66 And in case you didn't know, St. Nicholas has his own holiday which is not 12/25. He is not Santa Claus, yet rather a legend that helped form the modern belief of Santa Claus, along with other men of history, which when all combined become the modern Santa Claus.
@anaximanderia "And in case you didn't know, St. Nicholas has his own holiday which is not 12/25."
True, but irrelevant.
As for the rest of what you said, I already said it when I wrote that he was "one of many figures that went into the Santa... we know today." And indeed, St. Nick is one of the names he's known by, along with "Kris Kringle," which was adapted from "Kristkindl," or "Christ Child," referring to a Christian tradition from Germany of Jesus Himself delivering gifts.
@MaskedMan66 actually he didn't offer anything original to us at all. The teachings are found in many classical and eastern texts. What was different was basically telling the Jews that they've taken the old testament laws far too literal (fundamental). Their lawyers (clergy today) had lost the forest for the trees. The message of transforming the jews failed miserably as their lawyers were still too strong - what DID help though was PAUL who took the message of love to the gentile.
@robocoastie Jesus's teachings (which, being truth, had-- naturally-- long since been absorbed into other belief systems, even though those systems were wrong otherwise) were not the main point of His mission on Earth.
His primary job was to pay the spiritual and eternal penalty for our sins so that we wouldn't have to. We still have to face the physical and temporal consequences of sin, but because of Jesus's sacrifice, we need not fear Hell.
I used to love watching this on TV as a kid! It's always been overshadowed by "Santa Clause is Coming to Town"...although truth be told the Baum story is far better mythology in my opinion.
Um, how? Not for nothing, but the solstice isn't mentioned in this movie. It's still a great movie for kids who celebrate Christmas, though(whether they are chrstian or not). When I was little this was one of my favorite rankin/bass specials.
@MaskedMan66 heck no educated person was "orthodox christian" at that time including the clergy because they had studied enough of it all to know it was rubbish. It was long long been believed though that the commoner needs a crutch to get through the toils of the day. Only a small handful actually believed completely their nonsense. CS Lewis is the most modern one and we are now at the tail end of the Lewis style Christianity. We are now back to the feelgood style led by WordFaith movement.
@robocoastie Lots of educated people were and are Christians, and lots of uneducated people were and are unbelievers. Level of education is irrelevant. As for your silly notion of "only a small handful," I would point out that 2,000,000,000 (the estimated current number of Christians in the world) is one heckuva handful.
Through Christian history, millions have died for their belief in Christ, and more die every day even now. Would you die for something you weren't 100% sure was true?
@solitaryamazon Wiccan? Oh yes, "Wicca," that fake religion invented by a British government official in the 1940's to provide an excuse for his nudism and misogyny.
I've been looking for this movie for at least 4 years... Thanks to Google, Yahoo Answers, and this video, I have found it! Thanks!
